2012 Memorial Day 2

2012 Memorial Day 2

Friday, March 2, 2012 - 02:19

Round two of the 2012 Memorial Championship presented by Discraft was played yesterday at Fountain Park, in Fountain Hills Arizona.  This beautiful venue coupled with the perennially great spring weather made for a great day of disc golf. The lead card in the Men’s Open division, which consisted of Dave Feldberg, Paul McBeth, Will Schusterick, and Paul Ulibarri teed off at the always tough hole one in mid-afternoon. The spectators were out in full force with quite a crowd following the leaders. The round started with some immediate drama as McBeth went from being down one to Feldberg to taking a one throw lead. McBeth continued to gain on that lead throughout most of the course. Feldberg found his groove towards the end and grabbed a couple of throws back before the scorecards were turned in. McBeth shot the hot round of the day, with a 44, giving him a lead of three over Feldberg heading into tomorrow. Dave shot a 48, Schusterick a 45, and Ulibarri came in with a 51. Devan Owens carded a 48 to claim the fourth spot on the lead card tomorrow taking Ulibarri’s spot.

In the Open Women’s division, Valarie Jenkins finds herself in a familiar position atop the leaderboard after a great score of 59, extending her lead over Catrina Allen and Sarah Hokom to four.  The hot round of the day was thrown by 2011 world champion Paige Pierce, helping her jump up the leaderboard and on to the lead card.

Leading the Pro Master’s divison by one stroke is another world champion, Jonathan Baldwin. Harold Hampton and David Neff are one and two strokes behind Baldwin, respectively. Mike Milne will round out the card, though him and two others are tied at four back going into moving day.

The Grandmaster’s division is filled with legendary players and contributors to our sport. These guys not only do and have done a lot for our sport, but they are fierce on the course. The entire lead card of the Grandmasters division is ahead of the Master’s leader. Jim Oates gained a couple throws on Tournament Director Dan Ginnely today with Joe Mela two behind him and Jim Schultz just one behind him.
