"Gamers may get shot at disc golf"

By Preston Sparks, Thursday, July 26, 2007

Children and those young at heart could be playing a different sport next year on their Nintendo Wii video game console - one that has a direct connection to Columbia County - disc golf.

"I've been contacted by two different (software) companies who are both interested in making disc golf games for the Wii," said Brian Graham, an Augusta resident and the executive director of the Professional Disc Golf Association, which is managing a new International Disc Golf Center at Wildwood Park in Appling.

The Wii is an interactive video game console that allows play with arm movements using a handheld controller. Disc golf, meanwhile, has rules similar to golf but involves using a flying disc instead of a golf ball and clubs.

Mr. Graham said he was approached recently about two game ideas: one that would focus on some of the top players of the game, another that would be a partnership with the PDGA "and may possibly even take one of the courses out here at the IDGC (at Wildwood) and make that a digital course that you can play."

Development of such games, he said, is in the early stages, "but they've started the communication on it."

One of the software companies is Autonomous Productions, based in Redwood City, Calif. Shayne Guiliano, the studio director for Autonomous, said there do not seem to be any major obstacles keeping his company from developing a disc golf game for the Wii.

"Our tentative plans are to release a game sometime middle or late next year," he said. "... The Wii is obviously a great platform ... and we just think it's perfectly suited for what we want to do for a disc golf game."

Mr. Guiliano said the game most likely will be downloadable at a cost of about $10 to $15 through a new Wii service called Wii Ware.

"We're looking at re-creating some of the famous courses, working with Brian (Graham) and that organization to make sure that the game is authentic, and kind of take people through the steps of becoming a professional disc golfer," he said.

Mr. Graham says such interest in disc golf says a lot about the game's growing popularity."

I asked Graham about it the other day and they haven't picked the first course yet but they want it to be higher profile like Winthrop Gold. Maybe you'll be able to move the "ropes" on the screen to make it easier or tougher?

hope they know to put a THUMBER in the game!!! ;)

and i'd think Renny Gold is pretty high profile too... site of 'THE RENNY CLASH'... SSA rating of one of the toughest courses in the country/world?... known favorite of a lot of top pros.

wonder how many courses they could/would put on there.... and if they'd invent their own or have other features like turning off gravity for BOMB DRIVES... or maybe the ability to put in your farthest drive distance so it can mimmick how far you throw... of course someone could always put in 600' but if playing with/against friends i'm sure they'd call you out and make you put the real D

either way... i'm excited as well

i honestly think i'd buy a Wii if they had a DG game

I rented Super Monkey Balls(I think that is what it is called) for the kids. Pretty fun little game, lo and behold in has 9 holes of disc golf on it. Granted you use the same disc(It appears to be a Roc by its flight) and you smash a glass dome that covers some bananas instead of hitting a basket, it is pretty cool.

I know the wii games like sports are very fun and addictive, but I hope they work the physics out on a game like this before the pdga adds a stamp of approval for an official game, licenced and all....
If I ve' been a good boy this year and get a wii, my first avatar will be a mii of kenny. virtual ears and all.

As far as rumor or truth.....
I would love to talk to the developers of these games for a release during the worlds next year. If anyone...ehhh hem, cough, pdga....hem, hem...excuse me.... knows any contacts to get this rolling, I would hope they could contact me! :D

I've been emailing back/forth with someone in development of the game and I believe (dont hold me to it) that they said they are hoping to have a working demo by that time during the summer with a later release date. They've said they are working closely w/ the PDGA or @ least plan on working with them.

It talked to them about different types of throws and they are fully aware of the physics involved (it sounds like at least)

This is one thing I'm hoping they put some effort into and do well.

Things I'd like to see:

-disc "beating in"
-trick shots, thumbers, skips,
-good wii remote control of hyzer/anhyzer angles
-all disc manufacturers (or at least innova/discraft)
-tourney-style play/online play
-GOOD courses....Winthrop, Renny, Toboggan, Idlewild, Highbridge (all 4?)etc.,
-create-a-course would be an AMAZING option, but probably too hard to incorporate into a downloadable game (unless it's an expansion of some kind)
-ratings, round ratings, etc.

I think this is awesome, but still have my doubts until it is actually released. For the sake of the game I hope they have a good adviser and it isnt as toonish as some of the other sports games.

I just spent the weekend playing with my friend's Wii (man, that sounds sooooo wrong!), and they are not only very fun, but after playing with one, can see how they could do this very, very well. I hope they do.

The Wii controllers are certainly sensitive enough to accurately reflect very subtle movements. I can see how it would be possible to translate forehand, backhand, hyzer, anhyzer, loft putt vs pitch putt... basically all the different moves could certainly be translated by the controller of they program it correctly.

I can hardly wait....

suggestion: unlockable courses, discs and throws!

for instance, a new player must start out with a Roc or Buzzz and a putter. You can only throw backhand and everything tends to hyzer hard and not go very far. As you gain skill, your throws gain power and accuracy. you get to play tougher courses. you get to throw thumber shots and use drivers, etc. then you move on to the more technical and situational shots using the faster, more technical drivers. you could earn skill points to upgrade everything from the throws you can use to the discs and other gear you carry and the courses you play. at some point in the game, you become a PDGA member and start competing in tournaments. Eventually you're working on earning a spot in the USDGC... add in a TD mode for the masochistic users.

Someone with the contacts, please pass this idea along. nothing gets people interested in a game more than letting them earn new cool stuff :)

Shayne,

I am so pumped about this news! I cannot wait to buy a wii and this game
when it becomes available!!!
My name is Mark Stubbs and I've been a disc golfer since 1997 and a gamer
since Super Mario Bro for NES. My ideal day off is playing a couple of
rounds then hanging out with some friends and playing some games at night.
This was such good news when I read this on the PDGA DISCussions forum at
www.pdga.com. (http://www.pdga.com.)
I've been thinking about the aspects of a disc golf game for years now and
have alot of insider information that might help make the game true to the
sport and I would love to share that info with you.
I understand that you are looking for a tenative release in the summer of
2008. There is a great opportunity I would like to propose...

I am the Sponsorship Director for the 2008 PDGA Professional & Amatuer
Disc Gold World Championships presented by Bell's Brewery. This is the
27th World Championships and it travels to only the premier disc golf
destinations each year. This year, we were blessed with a combined event
(traditionally, the pros and ams are at different locations/different
tournaments.) This would be a great opportunity for this game to get
exposure to both levels of players at one venue. As well, with the
combined Worlds event, the courses have been selected for their
world-class challenges.
I would love to have a release party for the game at the Worlds this
August 8-16. As well, to see some of the Worlds courses in the game (from
what I understand, you intend on putting in real courses.) This would be
the equivellant of Torrey Pines, TCP Sawgrass, or Pebble Beach in the Ball
Golf world.
I would love to discuss this with you. We expect 1500 players over that
week of competition, plus officials, spotters, volunteers, sponsors, and
the community is abuzz with the event. I would like to get you involved
and to get the Worlds involved in this endeavor.
I have attached a Sponsorship Proposal with alittle information about our
event. I do not expect a donation or sponsorship. What would make me
happy is to set up a Wii event during the week. Let's make this happen!
You can contact me at this address or feel free to call me at
269-599-3658, feel free to contact me and leave a message and I'll be able
to return it asap!
Thanks again, Shayne! The disc golf community is drooling for a game the

it's released!!!

Hello Mark,

It's great to hear from you. Thanks for the stats.

Thanks for the proposal, too. I have reservations about announcing a
Wii release event before the game has gone gold, so my initial
response is that we should wait until we're closer to the event before
announcing it as a release event or preview event. We are quality
driven, meaning we won't release the game until it's fun, feature
complete and commercially polished, but I do think even if we have not
gone gold by DGC we want to use the event to get the game in player's
hands whatever state it is in.

So, let's wait a little while before getting into details. We're
working closely with Brian Graham and the executive board to come up
with a co-marketing strategy before and after release, and presenting
at the World Championship is high on the list of considerations. But
again, we want to move cautiously, make sure we can meet expectations
and give the disc golf community a game they deserve.

You don't know how excited I am about this possibility!!! We can set up a beta test during the week at any of our locations we've secured for worlds participants.
Each night, we have events planned for the players, staff and friends to do, from the Player's Party at Bell's Brewery to PDGA Awards Banquet. Each night thoughout the week we'll have something to do, however, we do need to overlap some things for everyone to be a part of. My vision is for the players to get free entry to the AirZoo ( a museaum of real planes from WWI, WWII, and current--including an SR-71 Blackbird) bowling facility with mini-golf, kart racing and lazer tag, and many other things. We could co-brand a beta release at any of these places, or have a stand alone event for this!
With the 1000-1500 players expected (including junior divisions starting at age 8,) what better place to throw it out there.
I will contact you in the near future about all the possibilities and some ideas and expectations the disc golf community would like to see.
Once again, THANK YOU FOR FORGING THIS PATH!!! Your work will be rewarded!

An email I sent:

"Hi Shayne,
I found your email from a message board thread on PDGA.com about the disc golf game for the Wii. Suffice it to say, I'm VERY excited for it! The Wii seems like it could be perfectly utilized for disc golf. I'm very curious about the game, and I was wondering if you could pass along a little info on the mechanics of the Wii controller motions. There is so much you can do with a disc while you're playing the game, and I'm hoping that the Wii controller will take advantage of that! I'm sure you've been inundated with the different kinds of throws and trick shots we use.

I hear you're looking for feedback and ideas. One particular part of the game that I like, and that certainly hasn't been in any of the previous disc golf games, is that discs wear in. The longer you have a disc, or the more you throw it into trees, the more beat up it gets, and the flight pattern changes. I think it would be interesting to see that in the game, so a "virtual bag" we create for the game can wear similar to the bag that we use normally.

I'm hoping the controller will be able to recognize a full range of angles, from releasing down from your toes to over your head, and with all the angles in between. What kind of sectors would be used for the controller? Obviously it can't replicate any minute angle, but there would be increments, right? 15-degree? 5-degree?

Anyway, best of luck working through the game, and I'll definitely be buying it the day it is released!

Thanks!

Mark Santa Maria
PDGA #26511"

and his reply:

"Hi Mark,

Thanks for contacting us.

We do plan on supporting fairly minute angle throw control, though
we're still working on it. As it is now, the angle of throw is set
before you begin the throw. So, for instance, if you hold the
controller upside-down when you "set your angle" = Press A and B, then go through a throwing motion releasing A&B simultaneously, we'll be able to recognize it's a scooby because of the pre-throw angle when setting your angle. As far as release point recognition...that's a little tougher, but we're working on it. We'll be able to recognize wrist twist, which affect control accuracy based on pre-throw angle, amongst other measures of quality for a given throw. But, we're confident we'll support tomahawks and thumbers and forehand, backhand, scoobies, hyzer control, etc...it's all about the pre-throw angle recognition, which we can do pretty well combined with power recognition, release point, etc. We're working on release point recognition, but there is still some exploring to do there.

Putting is something that we're also working on, because it will be
quite different than driving or short game play. You'll need more
control over specific horizontal throw angle, which is helped with
pointing recognition.

It's great to hear from people excited for the game. We are too!

I've actually contacted EA concerning the ease of shifting to a disc golf engine...they said if I could produce a working model, or if I was an employee, they would listen...otherwise, FORGETABOUTIT.

I am very excited about this game and yes I own a wii. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MAKE SURE AND INCLUDE LEFT HANDED PLAY! Don't discriminate against us right brainers.

Of course...if it's a downloadable game, I'm guessing it will be to par of what the Wii Sport game will be.

We should start a rolling list of things we'd like to see on this game. I'll start:

Game should be able to support the following throws:
Backhand
Forehand
Backhand Roller
Forehand Roller
Pancake
Thumber
Scooby
Flick Scooby

I love scotch...scotch, scotch, scotch,

have you ever watched the Stokely videos? Having 20 shots to introduce someone to is quite overwhelming.
I'd say, unlock those shots as upgrades on shots...skills competition. How about a realistic physics system? Wind?

posted in another thread... looks like someone else is getting into the mix and created a DG game for the wii!!!

http://www.gamepro.com/nintendo/wii/games/previews/170628.shtml

they're calling for a summer release

since its coupled with a bunch of other sports I wouldn't expect too much but it'll still be cool to be able to play DG on the wii

Just dropped another email to Shayne about an "August release" for the disc golf game. I will report.

Thank you very much sir.

I have successfully procured my Wii and am in great anticipation of its release.

For now though I'm having some great fun with Tiger Woods 2008 PGA Golf.
I shot a 53 the other night! :D

I am hoping (and suspecting) that Shayne's company's production will be an analogous comparison to the Big Beach Sports disc golf game as TW2008PGAG is to Wii Sports' golf game.

That is: No comparison at all.
The Tiger Woods version kicks butt.

From the one screen shot I've seen of the BBSDG, I sincerely hope Autonomous Productions does a better job than that.
It looked really... cheesy.

But then again, I guess I shouldn't pre-judge it before it comes out from just one screen shot....

Newest report:

Shayne emailed me about the Beta release at the Worlds this year.

Looks like this will happen. Still not 100%, obviously WE all want this, but he is very truthful about the fact that if the game is not ready, we won't get to test it.

If everything goes as planned, the beta test will happen at the FlyMart on Monday Aug 11th. We've also discussed them being around for the Semi's and Finals the following Saturday at TimberRidge as well.

I will report back with more info when available. Start seeking your Wiis now.

Once again, thanks for the update.

I'll have to notify my friend who's going to Worlds (and who also owns a Wii) of this possibility so he can hopefully check it out and report back.

Do you actually know that this new game will support and use Miis?

The reason I ask is because some games for the Wii do not.

Looks like a disc golf game is included in Big Beach Sports, shipping today. No word on this title, it's not Shayne's or a licenced PDGA game, but should be fun. it has beach volleyball, bocce, cricket, and a few others.

Well everyone, it makes me sad to report, looks like our dream of playing and testing the PDGA disc golf game at the Worlds wont' happen. There's a temporary setback that looks like will benefit us in the end.
Shayne wrote me recenly and reported this:

Hi Mark,

How's it going? It's great to hear from you. I have some good and
bad news, though.

The good news is that Nintendo recently announced something called
MotionPlus that will allow us to increase the accuracy of gesture
recognition for throwing a frisbee. (accurate recognition of release
point and spin control will be possible where it wasn't really
possible with high precision before) Here's a video that includes a
disc dog demo...

More Information at E3 (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZzEBnoFIvQo)

MotionPlus uses a gyrometer to increase the precision of the
recognition of arm motion. It will allow for us to support Disc Golf
on the Wii to a degree that hardcore disc golf players and casual
newcomers will appreciate.

The bad news is that we're pulling back our release window so that we
can wait for MotionPlus to be released and so that we can re-engineer
the control interface. This means we won't be ready to demo next
month.

--Well, I still cant wait if this means a better game. Later for now.....

Like was stated, good news and bad news.

We'll have to wait longer, but it should be better ...

did you realize the motion+ was an attachment to the arse or your wiimote? nintendo must be learning some lessons from bill gates.
thank goodness I didn't buy 4 motes.

Yeah, I just found that out in a link in this article.
If you haven't seen it yet, this interview with Shayne at 1000rated.com gives some good details about the game's development.

I don't recommend bothering with the Big Beach Sports offering.
It's just a bit too limited and cheesy. :(
