This is something that myself and several others have been working on for the last few months. And I want to share it with all of my disc golfin friends!
I have a very rare opportunity to introduce our favorite sport to a country! On the 27th of June, myself and some friends are headed over to the Philippines this summer on a mission trip to do basketball camps, talk in the schools, and help out a few needy communities. We are planning all this through my uncle who is a missionary over there. He found out I played disc golf and informed me he could get baskets made there and that I could introduce disc golf to the people by running a few clinics. So naturally I jumped on this in a heart beat!
While there I will be doing 2 to 3 clinics at different locations. My goal is to introduce the sport and teach as much as possible with my time there. We are expecting a lot of people for the clinics, hopefully I will have the be able to show disc golf to several hundred people! I have been there before for basketball games and it is not unusual to draw crouds as large as 500. So with the promotion that is already taking place, the media being involved, and word of mouth, the stage is set!
One of the schools I am sharing at has a large campus. And my uncle has informed me that they are wanting me to design the first course in the Philippines on their campus! So if everything goes as planned, by the end of July the first course in the Philippines will be in the ground!
I am so happy to be doing this and cannot wait to get over there! However, I could not have made this happen without some help. EDGE played a HUGE part in helping me get things together that I needed. Without EDGE this would not be taking place. I would also like the thank Rusco of Dynamic Discs for his help as well. You can bet that D's will be thrown on all kinds of stuff in the Philippines! I do want this to be a group effort and not just me. I cannot express enough thanks to EDGE and Dynamic Discs. But if you are reading this and are curious about helping out, I could still use stickers, minis, hats, anything I can hand out to the people who attend. The discs will be staying at the schools with the baskets so the can use them for the kids and for anyone who wishes to play. So I dont want anyone to leave empty handed! Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I will be updating this thread while I am there with pictures and words of how things are going. Its just going to be awesome! :D

I am so happy for you! I'm also elated to know that DG will be yet in another country. I really wish Discraft would have helped you as i know where your heart is. Jay & Des Reading and the E.D.G.E. organization are the future of this sport by getting DG into school systems and into the hands of our children....now EDGE can say that they've helped DG grow into another country through Miles and all of the people involved overseas. Way to go!!!! Thank you!!!!

I need to give two more big shout outs!
The PDGA came though with an awesome package of promotion and learning tools for me to take. Thanks to Brian Hoeniger making them aware of my trip they sent me some VERY usefull stuff. Thank you guys!!!!
Don OConnell met with me this morning to give me what he had to comtribute. And the most valuable thing he gave was his continued prayer for our group as we head over there. This guy is awesome!!!!
My favorite club has also stepped up and given me some sweet gear to take. Mike B had a big hand in this and you can bet Funkytown will be well represented in the Philippines!!!
To give you guys an update, we are now taking around 200 discs, several minis, a TON of stickers!!!!!, shirts, videos, course directories, a basket, and much more. This could not have happened if it were not for the support of all those mentioned! If I have left anyone out please forgive me. I has been VERY busy trying to get everything ready. Here are some pics from the little bit of throwing and showing I have been able to do! It was unexpected, but it was fun and a lot of student enjoyed playing this new game! Some of them actually played VERY well. Enjoy!
Here is one of the baskets that were made! We got them made for free because we allowed some advertising on them!

This should give you an idea of how short some of the people are here. Gylynne is short by pinoy standards, but by no means uncommon.

Very cool Miles! Looks like everyone is having fun, and that's what it's all about. As for the basketball, if Pinoy people are that short, does that mean the B-Ball goal is lower than 10 feet?

no its not an insult. It kind of means hello. And the bball goals are regulation size. Basically that mskes it easier to rebound and score in the paint. But drbbling and driving are much harder because they are so quick and small. Here is a link to the blog with all of our activities and happenings on it for those curious.

LoL. Well no matter what you want to think, it is a smile game over here. Everyone is so nice and polite. Really makes you wonder why they would want to imulate us. But that's something for another time. I got to throw around at another school today. Its amazing how many people it atracts. And all we were throwing were 137 sonics! Can't imagine what it is going to be like Tomo when I get to do a full clinic! I will let you all know how it goes!

Well we dontave a lot of time to post pics, so no more pics today. But I have been able to go through the sport and introduce it to the Faith Academy P.E. director. Faith Academy is the place we are staying, and he is going to be adding disc golf to the P.E. program!!! Which means a ton of kids will now be exposed to the sport year round! This is exactly what I was hoping for. And tomo Iam headed to the local fitness club where the promotions guy has me showing all thier staff how to teach the sport. So they are also offering it as a fitness class of sorts. And it also might happen that Gotchee, if thats how you spell it, my promotions guy, has some land where either me or he will design a course! I will be honest with you guys, We are not getting as big of crowds as we first thought we would at some of the demos. But the crowds we are getting are people who will expand the sport in this country for years to come! Things are not going quite like we had planned, but I think it is working out MUCH better for the future of disc golf in the Philippines! Oh, and the waters of Davao have some discs too!
LoL. Well no matter what you want to think, it is a smile game over here.
I think you totally missed the undersided nature of Bigbucks " smile game " reference.... You are too
pure of heart to catch that one ! :D

Here is another update. So far I figure I have shown over 100 people how to play! One of the places is the Holiday Spa here in Davao. Like I said earlies, they are going to be adding disc golf to their activities! This means that the number of people expossed to the sport is limitless! I have one more demo to give at Holiday tomo night at 7. And Gotchee is very interested in putting in a course on some land he has out here. From the size of the land he has and the type of terrain it is, it could become a pro caliber course!
I also have been able to share the sport with the Faith Academy P.E. guy. And I have set up a rec level course on their campus for them to use. So not only is Faith going to be teaching disc golf to students from all over the world, but they also have a course! It is small, 5 baskets, with every short playing shorter them 300 feet. But it does have its little challenging aspects. All in all I would say that my trip here has been very sucesssfull in sharing disc golf to a counrty! And the people who have seen it have been instructed enough to grow the sport and share with everyone they can! Thanks again to all my sponsors and I will give you guys a full update with more pics when I get back. See you guys in a few days!

Wow, Miles what an adventure. One of the most thrilling aspects of our sport today is to be able to share it with others and get to first hand witness many "A-Ha" moments as they realize how fun and dynamic disc flight can be. EDGE is very proud to have you representing the sport to the youth and people of the Philippines.
Keep enjoying yourselves and safe travels upon your return.

Well we finnaly made it back. No trouble with the flights this time. That was a Blessing. And Disc Golf has now been introduced to hundreds in the Philippines! We spoke in 5 schools while we were there about life in america, our culture, differences and our faith, among other things. I was able to "throw around" at every school we visited. How just throwing a disc attracts everyones attention. One of the schools, Faith Academy in Davao, will be offering Disc Golf as a P.E. credit! They also have some baskets and enough room for a rec course! Another one of the schools we went to is in the process of having baskets made for their campus. And every school I went too I gave at least a handful of discs for them to use. Most of the classrooms we shared in also wanted to know what we did for hobbies. We spoke in over 35 classrooms to over a 1000 students. So even those who didnt get to see Disc Golf now have heard about it!
Holiday Spa in Davao is a lot like the YMCA here in america. My uncle is a member there and told aout Disc Golf. So while I was in Davao I was able to give three demos to their staff and members! I did this in the Basketball gym because it was the only place. But despite that everyone had a great time! The favorite game was always Ring Of Fire. Thanks to all those who donated mini's and stickers for me to give away as prizes! Holiday was impressed enough by the demos that they will now be offering Disc Golf as one of their programs! And it wont be confined to the gym. One of the main persons at the spa will be putting in a course on some land they have! I was not able to visit the land while I was there, but from what I was told about it it could become a cahllenging course!
So between the two schools and Holiday, Disc Golf will be shared with students and Filipinos year round! I am very excited about this and cannot wait to go back in a few years to see what it will become! Thanks again to all of my sponsors! E.D.G.E., PDGA, Funkytown Flyers, Dynamic Discs, Laura Q, and Don O. Your donations are what made this possible. Without you guys Disc Golf would not be in the Philippines!
All in all the trip was a great success! Thanks to everyone for yuor prayers and well wishes! We have not getten very many Disc golf pics up yet, but I will post some within the next few days. For now I have a couple Disc Golf and some non Disc Golf pics that you might find interesting. Thanks once again to everyone!

Well the Hong Kong airport was REALY nice. Thats about all I saw of China. But we did have to go through customs and recheck our bag there. So I have been to China. As for discs, I took around 100 EDGE discs and about 60 or so other discs from various sources. All of the edge discs were 130 weight sonics, and the others were more professional molds and weights. I left everything I took with the people I shared with. It was awesome!
