I'm going to order tags first and see if there is interest second. This will be a tag challenge for all Detroit metro area players, but only amateurs can win season prizes.

I'm creating a thread here now so I can refernce it in the rules.

can outta towners get tags, like us in the midland area, and if so how often do we have to challenge D-Town people down there?

I'm not marketing it to out of towners, but it is hard to define who are Metropark Players. At various times in the past, Lansing, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo have done their own tags and the metro Detroit area has not had anything going on. This year we will have something going on.

Rules and stuff will be posted sometime later. Its not quite 2004 yet.

I'm in this with Bruce, to the point of sharing in the financial losses if there are any. Any financial gains (Ha!) for me will be donated to the PDGA National Disc Golf Center (NDGCG) project. I just think this will be fun in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area - especially to heighten the competitive challenges for amateur players.

Do those who signed-up last year (I mean this year) for the tag program that never quite gained momentum get priority for numbers or drawing for numbers? :D

Paul, if I have the tags by Thanksgiving, the Thanksglowing players will have first priority, not that it matters. In the Discontinuum tag challenge I bought #17 or #22, some large number. I've had 2, 4 and 5 ever since, except once Jon stuck me with a high number for half a day. If I get the tags by the Pie in the Sky, those players will get first crack.

Terry, I'm going to do this at no profit overall. Profits from tag sales will go to tag CTPs at tournaments where the TDs will accomodate us, and a small cash payout at the end to the top ten tags.

This is second hand information but if rumors were disallowed, this would be a mighty sparse board.

I'm not sure if the fact that the person making the challenge had a lower tag number already had anything to do with the refusal but it makes it a little more interesting.

I heard something about this but not enough to call anyone a wussy. All I know is that there was confusion about how to start a challenge. Here's a script:

[on the first tee before the tee off signal:] "You got a tag? What number? I'm challenging you!"

You can also challenge off-card, if the off-card player wants to accept, but keep it simple. And don't try and pull the old, "Oh, by the way, we're challenging," trick after you have played eight holes and have a five stroke lead.

Just to clear things up. Jamie didnt say that he was going yto challenge me untill mid round anyway. Second i did not refuse i just said that i thought it was for metroparks only. Third he then withdrew his challenge when he found out that i had a higher tag then he did. We also decided that we would ask bruce after the round what the rules were. Then i proceded to stomp his candy ***** into the ground that round so. To clear things up bring on the challenges as long as they are Legit. Know that i know the rules. With your permission I'll sell them at the Firefighters tournament next weekend. Paul Jeffries currently has #1. Slater has #5. Not sure about most of the rest but I'm looking to stick someone with #100! 1-14 and 100 are in circulation right now.

I stuck Mills with Lead Tag #100 today and am now the proud owner of Gold Tag #8. I'm thinking that Tag #100 will be the schule monkey tag until it descends to a proper bag.

Jeffries successfully defended Gold Tag #1 and no one thought to challenge Mosier for Gold Tag #2.

Mills, are you from the south where it does not get cold? Seriously, if you understand the physiology involved and dress for single digit temperatures, there is no reason to risk frost bite in any weather that Michigan gets.

Winning in the Winter -- A Brief Tutorial

Rule #1: Keep your head hot to keep your toes warm. If your head [not your ears or nose but your head] gets cold you die, so if your head starts to cool your body shuts down blood flow to extremities like toes and fingers. Kelsey and I may look silly in those fluffy suade hats with ear flaps, but our toes were toasty all day long. My head was so hot I had to keep taking my glasses off to let the fog dry up.

Rule #2: Keep your feet dry. Rocky sox, sealskins, gortex boots. You're going to have to pay to play here.

Rule #3: For advanced players, shoot a 960 rated round followed by a 975 rated round. That worked for me. :D

Re Rule #2, I've found that the key for me is thick wool socks. Unfortunately, Seal Skins keep the moisture in as well as out so in the winter, they just don't seem to work for me. With the wool, the socks and insides of the shoes get wet but the water is kept away from my feet. I guess warm and wet is better than cold and wet. ;)

I had on smartwool socks and BOOTS. I also had a hat on which was keeping my HEAD warm. My toes on the other hand no matter what i do they dont stay warm. I need to invest in some boots with Thinsulate or something but i still think golf in the snow sucks. #1 NO TRACTION #2 Lost Discs for no other reason then SNOW #3 Its cold as a witches T!TTY in a brass bra #4 I hate snow #5 NO TRACTION #6 Everyone plays like CRAP #7 I cant keep my feet warm #8 SNOW #9 SNOW and last but not least #10 SNOW AND NO TRACTION

How bout everyone climbs off my back about almost getting frost bite and not playing the second round and help me find boots that i can afford so maybe i can play in the SNOW.

I love playing in the winter because it makes little difference to my game. At rated events it boosts my rating to be playing my same lackluster plugger game while everyone else is playing like its 5 degrees with a foot of snow on the ground.

Was just noticing that 2 under in the late summer is 934 rated whereas 2 under in the worst of winter is 975 rated at Coldbrook.

Given the recent explosion of events designated as Worlds, how about a Winter Worlds?! :D

winter worlds would be AWSOME!!! if it where in AZ, FLA, TEX, or any other southern non-snowy state. you know, similar to the super bowl

Some of that discrepancy is probably due to #22/D which is played short in the summer because of the beach and plays 1-2 strokes easier.

BTW, I agree about winter golf. The only differences I notice are shorter and more understable drives. I don't remember having any footing problems except for the slippery boards at the front of the tees which I shouldn't have been stepping-on anyway. Every mistake that I made could have been made in the summer. In some ways I think the snow is easier because of the lower amount of skipping. It's kind-of like a soft, wet green in Ball Golf.

I think that's it. A lot of players are "more confident" in the summer. That's just head game. If having to wear winter gear and play in winter conditions just like everyone else at the tournament gets in your head, you might as well head to AZ.

I don't play better in the winter, but I don't let that fact work me as much as some players. I figure the absence of foliage compensates for the disadvantages of snow and ice, and for me that benefits my head game.

Your right it kinda works me when i cant have traction under my plant foot cuz there is snow. It definatley works me when i cant feel or bend my toes though too. I am heading to AZ at the end of this month.

From M-59 near Howell go due north on Oak Grove Road, jog left and then continue north, jog right in Cohoctah and continue north. At the end of Oak Grove Road turn left into to Byron. At the stop sign turn left on Maple. The course, Willow Brook, is on the left at the water tower.

From Lansing, take I-69 towards Flint. Go South on M-52 not very far to Britton Road. Left on Britton. Follow Britton. Turn right at the first T and then left at the next paved road. When you get to Bath Road turn left and I think Bath turns into Maple in Byron. Coming from this direction the water tower is on the left and the course is on the right.

From Flint, west on I-69 towards Lansing. South on M-13 until it ends at a T intersection. Turn right at the T. Take that road about 1.4 miles to a sign pointing left to Byron. Turn left. At the stop sign in Byron turn right and the course will be on the left.

Bring $5. We'll play one of the formats we are playing for the tournament which is now nine days away on Saturday the 28th.

How did Sunday league at Byron go?

League went so-so. We had a good turn out compared to league at Kensington the last couple of weeks. Mark could only see righty favorable holes everywhere he looked and he crabbed the whole time while his team kicked our behinds. Then when it ended in a tie for first he kind of insisted that the payout be donated to league and I think no one who went along with him on that was happy about it.

I'm getting calls and e-mails about the tournament. I'm getting the players guide, leader board cards and scorecards together. Friday I'm picking up some Z-Buzzzes, Crushes and Talons at Discraft.

The weather report is for upper 40's and some sunshine so the ice is going to be a bit thin for this Icebowl. This tournament will make a nice transition from Icebowl season to Mudfest season!

I'm going to set up some extra holes in case we have an overflow crowd. Plus i'm going to take Mark's crabbing at face value and tweak a few holes. Lots to do between now and Saturday.

I successfully defended #1 at the Ice Bowl. Michael Frame challenged, and it was a fair challenge given that we had partners of nearly equal ability.

Jamie Mosier, who on the immediate previous thread says he will try to be there, found a partner and won in Silver. I heard that he took a challenge and I have to assumre that he defended tag #2.

Can you think of two more vulnerable tags than #1 with me and #2 with Jamie?

Unfortunately, the DiscPimp didn't have the foresight to challenge me in AZ or he could have had it for a couple of rounds. In the end, I would have returned with it anyway though after the third round.

Any interest in a Skill Shot Tag Challenge on the Tobbogan course this Saturday, March 6? The grass is short and the snow is gone. Now would seem to be the time to practice the course.

These are the rules:

1. You have to have a tag to play. Anyone can buy a tag for $10 and play.
2. There will be a $10 optional cash side bet paid out to the top 40%.
3. There will be a custom dyed Z-Crush for the winner.
4. The lead group will mark the tees and basket positions with flags so that we all play the same course. The lead group will include an Am Nationals player or volunteer. The trailing group will pick up the flags.
5. Each group will be issued a Skill Shot basket.
6. The player with honors has to carry the basket. He also has to go set up the basket whenever anyone in the group is within range and so requests.
7. Singles. Stroke play. One round. All tags are challenged by all other tags, on and off the card.

Organize at 10:00 a.m. unless you see something otherwise on this thread. The Number 1 tag will be present. Please RSVP here or by e-mail to participate, so I know how many baskets to bring.

How many times have you actually played the tobbogan? It is such a brutal course and you can even shoot 8's on holes if you go into the far right brush on number 3. A decent score will be in single digits. Nice shooting first two rounds in Arizona.

Thanks man. I blew it on sunday. They took out some of the easy deuce holes and i just didnt have my game at all the whole day. Plus the wind kicked up toward the end and i took a double circle 6 on the last hole on sunday which dropped me from 12 all by myself to tied for 15th.

I actually think it was the Ten beers i Drank before the tournament and i didnt get to take my usual 5 Advil before the round because the bottle was missing from my bag. It just didnt feel good when i was practicing before the round.

Thats funny that you got drunk and had to wake up at seven that must of sucked.

I didnt tee off till 10:11 on sunday i woke up at like 830. No hangover just didnt feel right. My mind was all clouded.

Did you contact the park superintendent, Dick Schaeffer, and obtain permission? Please do this first. The Toboggan area is protected by the park, and we can't just show up and start throwing discs. If we tick them off, you may decrease the chances of having the Toboggan course at future events.

I checked the rules and regs and the park map. The nature areas are for limited use. The Nature Study area is across the road west of the Tobbogan area. The Tobbogan area is not designated as a nature area. There are no nature trails in the Tobbogan area. It is general recreational parkland open to the public subject to whatever rules are posted in the area. So long as we do not have more than 50 people in attendance we do not need special permission for an event. Our use of the area is no different from the people who are walking dogs on leashes.

10:00 a.m. Saturday if you are in.

Rather than give the park people a chance to make up a new rule, I'll check with Mr. Am Nationals. We have played so many casual rounds out there over the last four years, I'd think we'd know by now if that was against real park rules.

O.k., new rule, if you are moving to Georgia in two weeks, you can get in on the sidebet and not buy a tag. Anybody have a problem with that?

Scooter and I are about 80 % sure. I talked to a few others at Kensington to day and found out that they were interested in coming.

I threw my drive off the big hill, CB#3, into the pine tree in front of the short tee. Throwing next, I threw my upshot into the river. So its over for me, right? But then I hear this gurgling "aggghghghgg" coming from Millz as he throws his upshot o.b. over the road and then puts his next throw into the river! My five on the hole picked up two strokes on Millz's 7.

When im shooting well i need to just take the smart easy route to the basket and either make par or bogey but i tend to try and advance my lead beyond my means. This is something that i am WORKING ON PRETTY HARD. You should see my name popping up in the to 5 regularly once i get this under control. I did it at the Memorial. I did it at the Tag Challenge. I did it at the Hudson Mills when i was 2 down going into hole 1 on the monster from short tee to champ basket. Instead of parkin the short basket and making and easy three i decide to go over the top and make a HORRIBLE seven to go from 2 under on the day to 2 over then proceed to hack the next 4 holes to shoot a horrid 6 over :mad: Yeah Jamie doesnt choke he just SUCKS there is no room for him to choke when he never makes the lead card. I Drank a Pint of Crown Royal and like 10 beers the nite before and my phone got lost in the couch so i didnt hear the alarm go off on it. I woke up @ 930 and tried to drive to Kimball pines which after 45 minutes of looking i could not find so i turned around and went back to my buddys place @ Western and went back to sleep. Then there was no reason to go play Coldbrook after having to take 7's for 18 holes. Which would be a 72 OVER PAR. Plus it was my friends 21st birthday that nite and i needed to get the rest anyway. SORRY to dissapoint you Jamie but i wont DNF just because i am playing poorly. I DNF at Cracked plastic because i could move my toes after the first round and playing a Second one and getting frostbite isnt worth it. Its ok though ill be @ Stony on sunday. You have to accept challenges on your card. "Your card" is your foursome, threesome or fivesome. You may challenge and accept challenges from off your card, but do not have to. At the end of the round, square up on the card first. Then go resolve any off card challenges.

If there are linked challenges off card, like you challenged Paul and Jamie challenged Paul and Paul challenged me, treat that whole thing as one challenge. Lowest score gets lowest tag.

You know, when I fished #99 out of the box that Bruce had because I figured I'd just be keeping it all summer. Might as well get the # that I deserve right out of the box, as it were. I never had any idea that the next day I'd beat Bruce by 3 strokes on a 9 hole course and that just a week later you'd earn it, Jamie! But I have no regrets that everything worked out like this. ;)

I lost my tag @ hudsone mills in more then one way. I lost it to scooter by 2 strokes and i LOST it as in the cheap ***** belt thing that holds it on my bag broke and it is now somewhere in Hudson Mills Monster Course. What you do i have to you do to get another tag is pay another $10. If you really wanted a replacement 13, you'd have to pay $14.95 plus shipping and handling.

What tags are you selling right now. When can i get another one. I could care less if i get a replacement #13 if its ok with you ill just buy another tag even if its really high because ill get rid of it this weekend anyway :D Will you be there saturday to sell tags or just on sunday.

Made an 88 Tag jump today when i shot 12 down and No Foolin. Thanks Scooter for being my caddy :Dand im going to use a key ring and a Carabiner (i dont think thats how its spelled but you get the idea)

Nick Brown has the Schule monkey 96 Tag which i put into circulation when i bought it from bruce this morning :D :D

Brett successfully defended metro tag #3 three times today. I thought I was going to get it at Oly in the first round. I had a 3 stroke lead on him and then he aced. I hit a tree on my approach shot on the same hole and carded a 5! We played 36 at Oly and then went to Mokena and played 18 or 25. I quit after 18 because my feet were hurting and I wasn't having fun anymore. Brett and Damon finished the courses 25 holes. They have 2 more holes to put in. The course is like a beefed up 27 hole fire fighters. There are three fly pads on most of the holes. I think 3 or 4 holes only had one pad. And then there were another 3 or 4 that only had two pads. Tough course. Best course in northern Illinois now.

I defended #1 this morning against 951 rated Brook Plantz and a few other decent disc golfers, but lost it to Jim Daniels. Brook got in not understanding the ratings cap rule. At the end of the day he won #1 so i gave him his choice of the tag and the disc or a refund and he took the tag and the disc.

The rule is Brook can't compete at the tag finals for tag added prizes unless he loses two rating points. He said he'd get on that ight away!

I've now broken even and am now adding cash to the finals and bonus stuff to events. Today's Champion dyed Orc was valued at $8 which was its wholesale value. The Tag Challenge is now $15 to the good.

I sold a tag to a Chicago player who is playing somewhere between Jon and Brett's level. I beat her by about 6 strokes per round so maybe she shot 900 golf today. If you guys are playing the same tees as Barratt at Oly or the Illinois State Champs, introduce yourselves and go for it.

For everyone following the smack talk, I did beat Millz, Mosier, and Jeffries. But I shot hot in the morning and tepid in the afternoon, so I get to carry a big fat 33 for awhile.

Successfully defended it while scrambling all over both Courses to shoot an 11 Over on the day. Cashed bosh days and split the ace pool on saturday so im pretty happy about that :D
