First of all I would like to thank all of the people that have come out and donated their time to help and get this course in the ground. It was pretty amazing to look around Saturday and see that many people out there working. I would also like to point out the fact that the City of Cedar Hill has to be the best around, not only have they been more than willing to bring equipment out for us, but they also came out this weekend and put in around 100 man hours on the course..........talk about support :D.
We had a small work day yesterday (6 people) and got allot done in that time. Several of us will be back out tomorrow and Thursday around 11 if anyone has a few hours to give it would be greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get these courses finished and actually playable .

Will the baskets be in by then ?
Maybe a half workday and a round for those that helped out ?
For anyone that has not seen the progress out at this land is in for a big suprise... Brian L and Jason have put in alot of time and effort into this project and it is all paying off. I was overwelmed with the effort that so many people have put in to get this thing done. The courses are going to be awsome!!! I didn't think we had enough tight golf hear in the metroplex until Z-Boaz came around and this is going to make Z-boaz look wide open in some parts... I am excited to get another world class course in the DFW area... Thanks to Brian, Jason and everyone else that had a hand in helping out...

Gary, we had been planning this and you beat us to it. We are planning to work for a few hours and then play a cash-only mini. For those that work two hours prior to the start of the mini (around 2 or 3PM), entry will be half price. I'll try to get back today with the cost of it. Work has been a pain in the rear and really getting in the way of disc golf.
By the time we play on Saturday, there will be 18 baskets in the ground.

OK. I'm leaning towards $5 and $10 entries to the cash mini this weekend. $5 if you work for 2 hours and $10 if you don't. This way, the people that dont have time to help work the course can still help.

At lease one sleeve is set for every hole on the front course. A few have alternates in place. Almost every hole on the back side has a sleeve set. Off hand I can think of only two holes that need the sleeves still.
We will plan on playing the front course tomorrow. This will give us three water shots, some tough natural fairways and a couple of nasty tree holes to deal with. :D

I just want to say THANK YOU to the 20 people that showed up and worked Saturday, the 27 people that played :cool:and tell all of you about a little situation that unfolded in front of me today (which I still cannot believe happened ).
When I pulled into the gate this morning Brian was right inside of the gate looking at a few holes and the City was there dropping of golf carts for us to use. We just put in 18 baskets yesterday and Brian was excited about the fact that we already had people out to play the course, he mentioned the fact that one of them (I won't mention the name........I have respect for the guy and really don't want to trash him, but by the time I finish this story you'll see why I'm upset with him) was a local TD in the area that I knew so I went to say hello. We talked some and he asked if alchohol was legal in the park, I told him it wasn't so keep it out of sight and have fun. My day, at this point, looked great :D. Brian and I went out and started getting distances on the holes, Mace showed up and went to work on all of the low hanging branches with a pole saw, and I was very happy to see 18 baskets at Lorch Park :D. About an hour an half later Mace pulls up in one of the carts with said person (I'll call him Herman to make this easier) to tell us Herman has locked his keys in his car and needs to run home to get his spare, so please don't lock the gate..........not a problem.
This is where things started going south in a hurry .
Brian and I finished measuring holes, Mace knocked out a bunch of trimming and we all talked for a bit in the parking lot before Mace left (we won't talk about me almost killing Brian and I in the Gator ;)). Brian and I were waiting for Herman to come back out and retrieve his ride when the City showed up to pick up the carts, as we're helping to get the carts on the trailer a truck starts coming down the drive.............thought it was Herman coming back.................NO.........worse (but only at this point). The parking lot out there isn't barricaded yet so you can just drive straight into the park, which is why we still have to lock the gate. This guy is trying to head straight out into the park :mad:so I stop him and ask if I can help him, (keep in mind a City employee is right there with us) he says "Is this where the Disc Golf course is?", I say yes and he says he just wanted to check it out, so is it OK if he drives out there ..............This got a quick NO..........he persisted so Brian told him that the course wasn't actually open yet and he left. Now at this point I thought the day couldn't possibly get worse. I mean we just had a guy try to drive right into the park in front of one of the City employees, that was obviously a Disc Golfer.........how much more could go wrong??????????????
Right after this the City is about to leave and asks about the other car that's left, Brian informs him that it's a golfer who locked his keys in his car and he should be back shortly. The City guy wanted to make sure he could get into his car and make it out without getting stuck, so he stayed.
This is where everything goes REALLY wrong .
Herman and his buddies pull up...........Herman gets out of the back seat and almost falls due to his drunk state, then can't get his key into the door lock..................in the meantime Herman's buddy has gotten out of the driver's seat and proceeded to start urinating in the middle of a wide open field (I'm in my car trying to warm up watching all of this unfold..........poor Brian is standing with the City employee, who's watching all of this), Herman gets his car unlocked...........finds his cooler and comes out with three beers............he keeps one, sets the other in the driver's seat of his buddies car (who's still pissing in front of God and everybody) and then tries to give the other to the City Employee  .
I still cannot believe the last 30 minutes out there today............Thanks to a few [*****] Brian and I had a hard time enjoying the first 24 hours of this course being in the ground.
I was so shocked as all of this was going on (as was Brian) that I still don't know what to say...........I had 2 million things to say as it was happening and couldn't get them out of my mouth. The sad thing is I really don't think anything I said could have done any good in this situation :(.

What a day.
Thanks to everyone that has helped get this going all along the way. I really do appreciate it.
Reminder (for everyone's sake but directed to "Herman" and friends..), alcohol is not permitted in this nature preserve. Please exercise caution when you see a city employee standing there. Also, I'm sure it comes as no surprise to anyone that people do relieve themselves in the woods. Please do actually go into the woods to do this, again, especially when you see a city employee standing there. These are the types of actions that cause damage in to us in the minds of the city and county.
"Herman" - in case you feel that any information provided here is not an accurate description of yesterdays events, you are free to call me for a reminder.
To everyone else, the remainder of the baskets should all be in the ground by Saturday afternoon. I'd like to run another draw doubles at 3:00 PM on the other 18. Same format as this last Saturday. Come and help for a few hours and pay $5. Show up to play and pay $10.
Thanks again to everyone helping to keep this a positive experience for the city and county.

At Brian Lamoreaux's request, I have edited the remainder of this post out, which unfortunately, renders it effectively pointless. Sad...
Look guys (and gals), you know what you should and shouldn't do on the course, so just don't do it. Stop taking something as beautiful as Lorch Park, or any other park for that matter, and turning them into a negative thing.

This also goes back to the basic argument. Is it better to ignore it and hope no one notices, or bring attention to it and hope it disappears.
It's posted about because there are those offended enough by the activity to think it deserves more attention. It is not considered acceptable by a growing number of players even at the least organized of events.

How far are those carrys over the water?
gnduke
Feb 02 2005, 11:58 AM
I'm not sure, didn't have a measuring device. Brian should know.
Hole 8 is the longest tee to green, but the bailout is there all along the left. My guess is about 350' to the pin, about 250' straight line across the water, but you can play the hole completely over dry land.
Hole 9 is about 200', it's just intimidating.
Hole 17 is probably less than 300' to the basket, just over 200' to clear the water.
Anyone with accurate measurements please correct these estimates.
bslamoreaux
Feb 02 2005, 12:37 PM
Here are the measurements for those holes as found with a laser range finder.
Hole 8 - Pad to basket was right at 299' to 300'. It plays a little longer than that. I wonder if the laser range finder hit the trees in front of the basket. I'm going to measure that hole again. Either hit the hole through the trees or go around, over the water.
Hole 9 - Pad to basket is 195' to the short. 312' to the long. The picture shows the short basket. If you look behind the basket to the right, you can kind of see the clearing for the long pin. There is a bail-out route if you need to use it.
Hole 17 - Pad to basket is 248'. The long pin is 339' straight up the hill from the short pin. Again, if you can't make that throw, you can stay to the right all the way around the pond.

I can answer this one for ya, Brian.
No, there are no concrete teepads at Cedar Hill, yet. Brian is wanting the course to be played several months first, and then with input from players, he will decide on the best locations for permanent teepads.
So Brian, how'd I do? :D
Joey, they will not have tee pads installed until around October... They will probably tweek the holes and move some of the tee pads before it is all said in done. They want to wait to put in concrete until they are for sure about placements...

That is acceptable. From what I understand, the park is open to foot traffic as is, just not to vehicular traffic until there is some kind of barrier around the parking lot.

Seems that they would need to do somthing like that so that they, Brian, could get back there to work on the course.

Ryan and Pepper are correct. The pads will not be installed for several months yet. I want to make sure they go exactly were we need and want them.
Joey, the front 18 is in. All baskets and each tee is marked with stakes. This Saturday I will be writing the hole number and distance on each set of stakes on the box.
The city is stalling me on our discussions regarding the gate and fencing around the parking lot. It seems the idea we all liked is now not a good one. Our plan was to use telephone pole and cable method like at Lake Lewisville. Well, it seems that someone recently, like within the last two months, got themselves decapitated on one of those and now we can't do that. A new plan has to be finalized. Until then, the gate up top will be closed unless I or the city open it. People can park by the gate or a little farther down the road at the "official" Lester Lorch Preserve parking lot that they built last year. Some how I will get this worked out with the city. I hope this is why they want to talk to me. I have been summond to the parks offices later next week for a meeting with a couple of the big boys and girls. At least I hope it is this and not anything else.
This Saturday we need help installing the remaining baskets, tweaking some of the growth on a couple of fairways and digging and setting two final sleeves for Macemans event.
Who is up for the final work day? :D
Huge thanks to everyone that has helped so far. It really does mean a great deal to me.

Thanks, Gary, I was wondering that too, but was afraid to ask. I guess it could have been a toddler, or perhaps someone on one of those new micro mini bikes that are illegal everywhere for that very reason, or perhaps a go-cart. I do know that when you are out after dark and run into those wires, they can cut the skin pretty bad. Don's had that happen at Lewisville.

Hey, nobody really needs trees in the fairway as long as there are plenty in the rough.
There are no trees in fairways. The trees just give you an option to use the right fairway, left fairway, or center fairway :D I say leave the trees so undecided people don't feel obliged to always go down the middle.
I don't think there is going to be anymore major clearing, I only have two trees in mind that have been bugging me since I first set eyes on them... I now have permission to take them out :Dso timber :DI think we may be clearing a few tee boxes a little back and just basic trimming up. I can't wait to play the back 18...

As far as Herman goes........like I stated the first time, I like the guy and that is why I posted the whole incident the way I did. If he wasn't intoxicated (sorry forgot my breathalyzer that day ), then I apoligize for coming to that conclusion from what I was seeing. That being stated we will definately have to say that him and his buddy definately did not use good judgement that day. Someone stated last night that I drink out there also and that is a fact, but I try to do so discreetly when the City is around. So go ahead and try to throw me under the bus.......it isn't the first time and won't be the last. Everyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I really don' care to win a popularity contest :D. I'll say what is on my mind and if you have a problem with it let me know so we can discuss it. I'm usually pretty reasonable ;).

Guess what? All 36 baskets are in the ground!
Tee pads are marked with stakes and/or marking paint for now.
Still no updates on the parking situation so for now, either park outside of the gate (without blocking it) or use the other parking area just to the East of this entrance and follow the trail down to the pond and start there. I am still working on this with the city.
I cant begin to thank everyone for all they have done to help get this in the ground in time for Brian Maces Big Show next weekend. Without the help, it obviously would never have been done.
After this weekend, I plan on taking a short vacation from clearing and digging (and thinking in general), in another month or two I will start looking at what needs to be changed and focusing more on the exact pad locations and possible alternate pins placements. Keep that in mind while playing this weekend, the design is not final. It is however the most we could do and ensure it was ready for play.
Anyway, again, thank you to everyone that helped.

Brian

That second course is awesome, but I would not trust all of the distances on the posts.
Can we level out that tee pad on hole #6. I've seen just about everybody almost do a face plant on that tee pad.
Just so everyone knows. The distances were gathered by using a rolling distance counter. The distances were not always measured in a straight line due to the geography of the course. So I will call those distances "unofficial" for know. Eventually, when the real tee signs are ready to be dropped, we will ensure the distances are completely accurate. For now, they should work as a decent tool to assist you.
Ah, hole 6 on the front course, I dont like it either. There will be a slight change to that hole on Saturday. For now, the stakes will stay were they are to avoid potential damage to the new spot before the tournament. Just be careful on that pad for now. This will not be a problem once the pads can go down.
JD - I enjoyed playing that doubles round on your card. Gateway is lucky to have you. Congratulations again!

I took vacation day on Friday and ventured out of Lewisville and over to Cedar Hill to play the first 18. I was impressed with the course and cant wait to play the 2nd 18. The county parks inspector (I think that is how she introduced herself) was out there on an inspection and she seemed very enthusiastic about the project. She asked that we (another guy that got their right before me) call her after we played the course and give a review. She followed that up saying that if all went well, there were a few other courses that might be going in the ground but I cant remember what the locations where. Jeff, dont know his last name, left her a nice v-mail after the round. My only complaint for the day would have been the drainage issues. The holes in the low lying area around the parking lot catch all the run-off from the hills and leave a pretty muddy situation. Other than that it was great. Those over the water shots are a blast. I parked my drive on hole 8 just beyond the two vd trees, short and to the right of the basket. Felt great.
I finished 7 over, but was pleased since Ive only been playing for 3 months now and it was a new course for me. The best tip for anybody who hasnt played itstay well within in the fairway. I predict a lot of lost discs once the foliage starts coming into season. That junk is thick. :D
Thank you to everyone that helped make the courses possible. I enjoyed myself and Im looking forward to playing the 2nd course. I do see these two courses getting even better as more tweaking is done. I also see them getting a lot of respect in the DG community

Glad you got to enjoy the course. The other 18 baskets are in and ready to play.
You brought up a couple of things that Ill try to cover here real quickly.
The person you met was Mary. She is the Park and Open Space Administrator to the Commissioners Court of Dallas County. Simply put, she is the person we need to impress in Dallas to ensure more good things happen. Mary reports directly to the court (read John Wiley Price) where they then decide what is, and is not, possible. Mary has told me the John Wiley Price and the Commissioners Court are happy with what we have done in Cedar Hill so far. The potential for a few additional courses in Dallas County is very real. In fact, I have been to a couple of locations with her to discuss these possibilities already. Now does everyone understand why I didnt want to rock the boat to much on this first course? We, as a golfing community, had more riding on it than just this one location.
The other point you brought up was the drainage on holes 5, 6, 7 and 12. It can be bad, especially after a few days of rain like we had last week. A resolution will be difficult here. The reason for it is good and bad at the same time. This is a Nature Preserve. That is why this property is so incredible. To combat the drainage issue would involve putting in artificial devices to deflect the water to a different route. At this time, that is not allowed, however, when this all started, disc golf baskets and tee pads were not allowed either. Given some time, I think we will be able to work something out. I hope four holes with some water dont keep people from playing the entire 36 hole course.
By the way, that junk is really thick when you are trying to cut fairways, tee pads and trails.

Thanks for all of the good comments from everyone. You can't imagine how excited Brian and I were to see people actually out playing on these courses we worked so hard on :D.
I understand that the wet conditions on a few holes really sucks. Cedar Hill got a record 13" of rainfall in 1 day last year and that area just hasn't been able to recover yet. I'm positive once it warms up and we get a dry spell that area will get back to normal. Rest assured that Brian and I are working with the city on some ways to improve the drainage there, it just may take a little time to implement whatever solution we come up with.
As far as the courses go......they are just going to get better over time. As ColecatZ stated the shule out there is VERY thick. The first time you get off the fairway and have to climb in there try to imagine taking out a patch of it 250' long and 40' wide and you'll see why allot of the holes are short on the back course (DO Not give me a map and a marker ever again Brian ;)), it took 10 people 2 six hour days to accomplish this . For now most of the course will be playing either to the short pin placement or from the short pad, that's why there is a long walk between some of the holes now. Enjoy it how it is now and look forward to what it will be in the future :D.
I want to give a huge thanks to all of the people that came out and donated some of their valuable time to help us out, these courses would not be in the ground if it wasn't for you guys .
I hope I didn't let the cat out of the bag on the other possible courses.
Thanks again for all the hard work, everybody.

a couple of quick comments:
- a big THANK YOU to everyone that made these courses become a reality. especially brian and jason.
- i only have been able to play the back course...very tight...but i can tell these courses are going to be incredible, and cedar hill seems poised to become the flagship of disc golf in north texas.
- about the drainage issues around the parking lot holes...has anyone actually seen this area dry? it seems to me that the springs in the hillsides might be responsible for the continued wetness in the area. unless the water table goes down i dont know if the area will ever dry completely. i'm no hyrdrologist or anything, so i could be completely full of it...

I will be out there first thing in the morning on Friday finishing up on some last minute stuff. If anyone can lend a little time to help spread some mulch I would greatly appreciate it. Then Im game to play for a while.
Did anyone notice the 80 feet of water-channeling yard edging I put down on hole 6? 20 feet around the basket and 60 feet to protect the area that will be the tee pad this weekend. I hope it helps even a little. I was out there after dark on Tuesday doing that while a raccoon about 30 feet up was pegging me with nuts and stuff.
Please do not block the gate when you come out to play casual rounds. The city called me Tuesday afternoon to give me a hard time because they couldnt get in the gate to retrieve their trailer in the bottom parking lot. Then I got there and had to carry a bunch of stuff down the hill to work on those water areas. Imagine carrying 80 feet of edging, a shovel and some other hand tools down and then up that hill. Its OK to park by the gate, just dont block it. Thanks!
Oh, in case Brian Mace hasnt mentioned it yet, a friend of mine owns a Pinera Bread restaurant. He will be out there in the mornings taking pre-orders for lunch and then delivering them in between rounds. Take advantage of this and you wont have to drive back up into town for lunch. :D

You start on hole 2 of the Beaver course, play through hole 16 then switch over to hole 1 of the Coyote course. After you play all 18, you pick up the Beaver again at 17 and play through 1. This puts you back at the second gate.

All in due time Pizza.............we have a possibility if it doesn't get f'ed up ;). We'll let everyone know when it happens, in the meantime make sure that the Dallas County Parks Board knows how much Cedar Hill is appreciated and it will help the cause :D.

I just got this email from a local golfer today, you may want to pay attention to this:
Wanted to make sure people know that we cant park on the grass at Cedar Hill anymore. There are signs and a Cedar Hill Police officer said they would begin towing today. Please forward so all will be aware

I suppose the only option for parking, for now, is to use the other park entrance and walk to the course, correct?

check out brian's post on the other c.h. thread.
....Any one know if there is any truth about this. (I mean I did hear it from Jeff)...
I posted earlier in this thread about meeting some guy named Jeff when I first played out there a few weeks back......and how we were approached by a lady that was out there doing an inspection. She worked for the county I believe (I think Brian posted the info on her a few pages back) and she mentioned a possibility of a few other courses that were being kicked around if this one, Lorch Park, went off well.
We called her and left a voicemail after playing about how much we enjoyed the course. Don't know if that's the same Jeff or not, but he had a retractable stick, some rice cakes, and was super paranoid about snakes, bacteria and leeches in the water. :D
oh, and he was not at much of a loss for words.....at all. :)

Maybe not for people with your sort of special needs but well enough for the common house monkey. :D
Dont worry about tomorrow. The gate will be wide open.
