I recently bought a 172 brand new green z-crush that i was hoping to be my headwind driver, but, three throws in and the thing is turning over on me. I have heard once that the yellow or the white crush might be more overstable, i know the blue orc is more stable than the white, so I thought there might be validity to this. Can anyone verify this? Also, what are your headwind drivers?
Thanx, Chris

Chris,

have 3 questions:
1) do you consistently throw > 425' of controlled D?
2) is the disc turning over and staying turned over without flexing out?
3) are you throwing it with hyzer?

for #1
if yes: you'll probably have to step up a disc.
if no: it's not the disc's fault.

for #2
if yes: this sounds like more of a torque/angle issue.
if no: this can be corrected w/ a lil hyzer as the crush doesn't have huge resistance to turnover.

for #3
if yes: depends on #1 and #2 here...
if no: the properties of disc flight and turnover (especially into the wind) are different on an anhyzer or flat shot than they are on a shot that starts hyzer and then turns over... basically, the short version = a disc that starts hyzer into a headwind is more likely to flex out even if it gets turned over even if they reach the same degree of "turnedoveredness."

I like a Predator into the wind. Firebirds, Spirits, and Speed Demons are nice too!

SupaSnipa:

The 'blue Orc' stability issue is a myth. Talked about it recently with Snapper Pierson. He and his friend both have blue Orcs of the same weight and seasoning. One is overstable and the other is understable.
The truth seems to be that Orcs vary. Period.

Quite often when I putt I myth.

F I R E B I R D for any headwind greater than 10 mph.
O R C for any wind less than 10 mph.

My answer for you is...

Try everything more than 3 throws.
Try everyhting in different weather conditions.
Try different discs at different ranges and release angles.

I've seen guys throw Crushes as turnover drivers so try a Pred or an Orc...

maybe i just have some of the (over)stable crushes but mine hold up quite well into headwinds up to ~40 mph as long as i release them with a hyzer angle.

granted, if i put em out there flat/annie, they aren't coming out of the turnover.

i won't argue that there are discs that are better suited as "pure headwind" discs, but crushes shouldn't be overly flippy for most players with less than 425'ish power.

In wind, I use a "E" Spirit for straight shots that hyzer a little at the end. For shots that need to hyzer a lot, I use either a "H" Speed Demon or an "H" Spirit. (Depending on how my bag is set up for the time being)

Nothing holds up better, and still consistanly hyzers in the wind than a Speed Demon or Spirit. I personally preffer the Spirit, b/c I use Spirits for almost all drives, and I like to keep my mold count down, to better build muscle memory.

Try a Z predator or Z Talon for headwind drives. the talon is really flat and doesn't get affected by the wind much. the Pred is more overstable than the Crush and will hold a line well.

I played this weekend in Monterey at the CSUMB course for the NorCal series championships. I normally play DeLaveaga which is nice and protected from the wind. Monterey is not. I had a couple of tsunami's in my bag because I wanted to try them out and they ended up being the greatest disc for headwind shots. Plenty of stability, but not overpowering like firebirds are (for me) but very fast. I would definitely recommend giving them a try.

I went out the other day in huge gusts of winds with the sole purpose of trying my entire arsenal of discs in the wind as I get terribly frustrated with the almost-always windy conditions here.

I had absolutely no luck keeping a Crush or Viking (both 172g) on course. Surely with enough power and hyzer one could keep it straight but I don't have the ability to pull that off. My usually trusty X-XS, fuhgeddaboutit. I've just recently been able to throw Firebirds and Predators (period) and I noticed their fabulous distance in the wind. I also had some success with a max weight Pegasus (thank you Master Suter for recommending) but these don't seem too easy to come across. My Z-Talon (thrown very low and hard) worked exceptionally well.

I like to throw a 172 Beast on a slight anhyzer in headwinds...ooh yeah it's blue /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

No joke! You'd be hard pressed to find wind that could mess with a speed demon!

Hell, I can forcefully turnover a Speed Demon into headwinds, and still get huge "S" curves out of it!

The best headwind driver I have ever used by far is the E Spirit. You can throw this disc so low to the ground it just cuts through the wind like nothing. Enough said.
