Just curious on information behind retired molds.
I know of these, but not how they fly. Add to the list if you can.

And any interesting stories of discs being retooled or renamed would be cool too! And if anyone knows why any of these were discontinued would be informative.

Condor [Ghetto Roc], Zephyr [both?].

Oct 21 2004, 01:40 AM
I've seen recent runs of the Ghetto Roc (Condor) and the Zephyr. The Condor even comes in super light, MTA plastic weights. I have a current Super Puppy. I think that the SP only gets run every so often.

Oct 21 2004, 01:44 AM
Forgot to mention: my PDGA disc is a Raven. Another retired mold is the Raptor. I don't know the whole story, but I think they were only run once, for the great holes of the world series. Also, there's an Innova Apple, and an Innova 2500 (or something like that. I guess it was named for the amount that was run.) Wasn't there also a short production run of a disc called the Rocray with a Roc top and a Stingray bottom? Felix, you know this stuff inside and out. Where are you!

...I'd like to take credit for those [?], but I copied that off some site. Right right; I'm a serial annotator.
Evidently, that list is a tad apocryphal, if lew can be believed. lew, can you be believed? :)

I thought Sweeney got his Ghetto Roc out of reserve, as a favor by Mr. D....must've been a 'dib' out of a smallish run.

I've seen Pat roll his Ghetto Roc for quite some distance...400+ [real feet, not 'board' feet]. ;)

Oct 21 2004, 02:27 AM
Polecat are current as well...Innova describes them as being "back," and I got four identical ones shipped immediately from Zonedriven, so they aren't hard to find. It is run in supersoft plastic, so it's not exactly a Trac-less Birdie, but I have seen some X-out Polecats in hard DX.

Regarding flight characteristics, and some retooling info where applicable. I've compiled short disc reviews including most of the Innova and Discraft golf discs on your list. I think alot of the Innova Discs that are retired were Large Diameter Drivers...and with the improvements in technology and Smaller Diameter Drivers they just became obsolete. Just an idea. But for MidRanges like the Hammer I don't know why they would retire them, I have seen and thrown Hammers and they are really nice, but alot like a Shark and Roc.
Cheers,
Matt

Some more disc's no longer made: Mirage, Coupe, Ace (new model out now), Hammer Head, Phantom Plus, Jet Eye, Rock N Roller, Floater, Bullet, Soft Touch, 91 Mold, Kitty Hawk, Hooker, Ben Wal, original Eagle, Raptor, Brand X 40X, Brand X 44X, Thunderbolt, Falcon, ..........

I'm sure there's more, but I need to get to work.

Well, I actually still have a baracuda, Phenix, Griffin, Scorpian, and and old Viper.

The old Vipers were the bomb. The new ones (especially the CFR) are overstable pigs. Viper also held the distance record at one time. The one I still have got run over by a bulldozer once and flew even better after that happened! Unfortunately it also has a big gash in the rim after hitting a bar holding up a newly planted tree making it illegal :(

HI, here comes some notes!
Dolphin (Floats?) Yes floats, I have never thrown it though.
Gopher, larger diameter polecat, highspeed understable for me.
Hammer, there are a couple of molds of this one, first run is a modified Aviar XD.....
Jaguar, not retired, latest run from around this time last year I think, large diameter, very understable in high speeds. I still use it for forehand aproach max 300ft.
Piranha, three versions of this, first run without the thumtrac, then two different versions with thumtrac. Latest version is a stable approach disc or putter.
Pole Cat (Birdie minus Thumb Trac?) Larger diameter then the Birdie if Im not mistaken ????
Raven, a Viper with a bigger bead?!
Scorpion, larger diameter driver, rather stable.
Thunderbird = its the Teebird
Viper (Speed Demon of day too) Viper is still being made.
Cruiser , very very understable driver,
Windstar, retooled Crusier. Never thrown one, I never even seen one overhere in real life. It is said to be more stable than the original.
Cyclone 2 (Beefier Cyclone?) More highspeed stable cyclone.
Deuce is a modified Phantom Plus, with two beads (!!!) if I remember correctly, Never thrown mine!
Phantom, extremely understable driver, made in a very durable plastic for that time.

If you want to read more about all the golfdiscs that have existed, take a look at our database. It is in english and you can find all golfdiscs ever produced under:
http://www.discgolfsweden.se/discar/discar.aspx
On the left you can than choose for ex "purpose" (Purpose = "Classic" means vintage golfdiscs) and/or "manufacturer", "discline" and/or "type".
The press "Sk", swedish for "Search"
We are working on an english-version on the whole site, it will be launched during winter...... I hope

Enjoy!

Pegasus (Wind disc...slower Banshee?)
Raven
Scorpion
Viper (Speed Demon of day too)
Cyclone 2 (Beefier Cyclone?)

I have these.
The Pegasus SUCKS--way too overstable, even in the wind (maybe my disk was just too heavy). I hate it and NEVER use it.
My Raven is good for long/medium drives, though I hardly use it. It makes a good roller, too. I'd hate to get hit by it's 175 grams.--it'd probably take an arm off! I didn't know it was retired. :(
I found a unmarked Scorpion last year. It's a heavy disc with a wide diameter that is awesome for overhand/thumber throws and for throws when I don't want to risk losing a "good" disc! :D
My friend has a Viper that he putts a lot with. I don't know why, but he likes the feel of the putt. He just started driving with it not long ago and doesn't use it much, but does like the results he gets.
I have two Cyclone 2s--one is around 170 and the other is around 176. I LOVE my 170 and could use it for ANYTHING (driving, approaching, putting, roling, forehand, backhand, whatever). I use the 176 for thumbers sometimes. I'm extremely disappointed to hear that it's no longer in production--probably my best "all around" disk. :(

I remember when most of these disks were in production. I haven't bought a new disk in years, so I am surprised that many of them are no longer around.

2 things... here's a web page (http://www.texramp.net/~dbell/discgolf/dgdiscs.html) that has A LOT of older molds, and what they kinda do.

I have thrown a Python, they come in large diameter (roc size), and come heavy (180), they are understable at high speeds and overstable at low. They actually make good rollers. :D

Innova did not discontinue the Champion Rhyno. The Whippet was not discontinued, only the Champion Whippet.
The Ace has not been discontinued.

Sorry for any confusion. The INNOVA (http://www.innovadiscs.com/discs/index.html) website has been updated.

Here is a list of discs/molds that have not been retired as mentioned incorrectly earlier in this thread.

These ARE NOT retired:

Zephyr
Condor
Jaguar
Polecat
Ram
Viper
Thunderbird - This is the Tee-Bird

They are closer to the Blaze. But the newer "S" plastic is more durable now, and almost never tacos or chips or anything. The newer blend of "H" plastic is more Polyester (Dave?) then the original plastic for the "H" line discs. I too liked the Warrior, but man...nothing beats a "S" Blaze.

(I wanna say that the original Warrior/Apache/Scouts were run in some kind of "S"/"H" mix, as opposed to straight "H" now. Feels like it anyways. You'd have to post to David on the thread for asking him questions.)
