i was wondering if anyone has thrown innova's new disc, the bulldog and what they thought

I haven't thrown it yet, but I did putt with one of Dunpace's for a little while. It is an overstable approach disc. It had the Hydra style plastic. Very Grippy.

Actually I've tried two, both around 165...the undercode is 'BL', not the obvious 'BD' or the equally obvious 'BU'. Both plastics seemed more "editionesque" than recent Champion mixes. The second was known to have been pressed at a slightly cooler temp., and was less concave between the bead and flash, and therefore slightly less overstable...I think 'overstable' is the message with the Bulldog.

It seems beefier in the hand than a Gator [which is my most-comfortable fit], and seem less affected by the wind, also with a more dramatic fade [back]. It seemed kind of unwieldy for a forehand, which is unfortunate; I seed a middie I can't torque over.

...I think we should keep in mind the 'previews' of these 'test' discs is usually on an unseasoned disc...I know that was my case.

Firstly the art: Evidently, it's someone besides whomever did the gritty "Supernatural Series" of Banshee, Gremlin, Beast, etc. Next to that scheme, The Bulldog appears a tad cartoony...drool on the mouth; lettering made to resemble nuts/bolts, etc. Cute, but not cutesy. And a tribute, evidently...[?].

The plastic feels harder, in a brittle kinda way...reminds me of my XD, circa mid-90's.

The grip is nothing like the shallow Roc's. Much bigger, top-to-bottom. Think: Swollen Gator.

...on an elevated hyzer, Bulldogs tend to 'dig' rather than skip. Woof! "That dog can", etc.

...the "BL" is fadishly popular to the point that_whenever any of our crew see Jimmy on an adjacent hole, loud 'woofing sounds' are the order.

WOOOOOOOOFFFF

Oct 27 2004, 02:00 PM
This is a bummer, I was really hoping that the Bulldog would have a similar feel to that of a Roc or a Gator.

As for the plastic, I will not be trying it. I have tried the Hydra and it just did not feel right. It was like a stiff/sticky Blowfly. And I definately prefer the shallow rims.

So I will likely just stay with my Wasp. Which if none of the "Innova only, non sponsored players" have not tried it. The Z-Wasp feels very similar to a Champion Roc. It goes just as far. I usually throw my Rocs/Wasp 300-350ft as an Amateur. Once the Z plastic gets broken in a little bit. About 5-6 rounds it is very very comfortable.

I will just wait untill Innova's next overstable midrange to come out.

Parkie, you never mentioned if you even held one...did you? 'Cuz, I'm just reporting on MY grip. I would never even consider the Roc and Gator similar in that department. Nor the flight scheme. You have to get seat-of-the-palms experience for that.

Hmmmmmm, It's been four days since we had the first 'retail' version here; perhaps they haven't 'shipped' yet.

Bulldogs are marked: "All-Purpose Disc" but I'm betting they get used primarily as a middie.

I think Innova calls all of their mid-range discs "All Purpose."

Nov 01 2004, 12:37 PM
The TD in Vegas was calling them "Bullfrogs". :)

They felt like a massively fat-rimmed gator in Dragon plastic. Didn't really feel like a Dragon because everything on it was so thick, but it fetl more tacky. The Dragon is thin and flexible and tacky.

Nov 01 2004, 07:24 PM
I finally had the chance to throw the Bulldog.

At first I was taken aback by how small it is, max 175g. It is VERY thick. The gippy plastic is similar to the dragon and the hydra ( I don't like that plastic, nor the new pro line). But it flies like an overstable aviar. I had to throw it as hard as I could to get to go as far as a easy Roc/Wasp throw (275-300ft). It should make a good overstable approach disc, but as a midrange, I doubt it can go the distance.

Quite true for the BL; it says "All Purpose"(sic).

actually it says Multi Purpose. I have one in my bag as a putter. It comes out of the hand and just hits chains. as a putter, it does exactly what I want. Like a big bead Aviar that comes out of the hand smoother.

...that change could be one reason for the 'lag' in distribution from he-ah to hither.

X-Matt, does your current putting style 'play' on a sharp, predictable fade? That's what we're noticing he-ah. Of course, none of these discs are 'seasoned', yet.

xterramatt
Nov 04 2004, 07:25 PM
I'm a lefty, I putt towards the top left of the chains, and hit pole when I'm on. I hit 8 of 8 putts (had one that was too far and risky to go for) today and 3 of them were on object targets (4x4 posts, 18" of red tape)

Basically, I like it's predictable fade, like a big beeed aviar but no glide. doesn't get affected by the wind unless it's a cross wind. No, it's not seasoned, they are great out of the box. Something about the release just sends them on the right path for me. and I can't get them to "fly" when putting, so I don't get into trouble with it.

Nov 13 2004, 08:39 PM
it's a doggie brick :D

Nov 15 2004, 10:51 AM
got one friday and played with it this weekend.
its an overstable spider. maybe a little thicker feel to it in the hand.
didnt have any wind to contend with but that seems to be the best application for this disc. time will tell......

Sounds like it's basically a clone of a CE Rhyno. Yet another redundant Innova disc?

slo
Jan 04 2005, 05:53 PM
Not shaped like a Rhyno. It most resembles an INNOVA Hydra, if that helps. After that, like a Gator, with the rim swollen.

It's most like a 'sandwedge', B&S Golf analogy-wise. Spikehyzers bite, and stop.

...as for Bulldog putting, I'm seeing float and fade, not flat shots.

Jan 04 2005, 05:55 PM
Hearing that the plastic reminds one of the Hydra and Dragon makes me wonder ... does the BullDog float in water?

vinnie
Jan 04 2005, 06:48 PM
yes it floats

xterramatt
Jan 04 2005, 08:30 PM
I've tested floating properties.

Unofficially a 173 just floats, a 174 and up just sinks.

under 173 should float.

Bulldog has retooled bottom and weighting agent in the plastic at heavier weights, hence no float.

Jan 05 2005, 12:21 PM
well im liking this disc, yeah its like a sandwedge, something you wouldnt use on a regular basis but good to have on specialty shots.
ive used it on elevated teepads where you have to stick the landing below you without going too far past, a short hyzer-type shot that wont float away on you....and putting into the wind, its solid, definitely more fade than my putter at the end but the wind doesnt affect it as much......this is with a max weight bulldog.

Jan 31 2005, 12:20 AM
these are very nice. if you throw rocs or aviars you will want to check them out.

"Floats" as in, "place it gently it on the surface and it doesn't sink," or "floats" as in "spike hyzer it into a pond and it bobs back up to the surface"?

Jan 31 2005, 10:37 AM
I decided to switch my putter from Crystal Z Challenger to the Bulldog after practicing with them both and noticing that I make more putts with the Bulldog. I just picked up 2 Cam Todd Challengers and was very dissapointed, the plastic was slick and hard to grip. I went ahead and tested those against the Bulldog and the Bulldog won again. I just like the grippy plastic and the stability seems the same as a Challenger.

Paul, I've been using red 175 Bulldogs. My Crystal Z Challengers are also 175 (they say 172-174 but I weighed them). They really feel about the same stability to me.

I just got a Bulldog this week, and I love it. I throw my putters a lot (Qmegas/Aviars), and I don't like changing to a different style disc altogether when the wind is too strong. The Bulldog is the answer, as it flies great in the wind and feels like an Aviar clone when I rip it. I can throw this disc very hard and it flies great, very smooth out of my hand. This disc has a very high proportion of its weight in the rim.

Feb 19 2005, 11:32 PM
Does anyone know if or when the Bulldog may come out in Champion? Thanks!
