I have seen, once or twice, folks carry some sort of stake/post that attaches to their golf umbrella, so that they can easily stick the post into the ground, and stand underneath the umbrella without having to hold it. I am trying to rig up something similar, but can't recall what was used. Any suggestions? Thanks...

Try a ground spike or ground anchor. Check Lowes/Home Depot/Wal-Mart, etc.

There is a guy in G'boro that makes these. He uses a ski pole with the umbrella attached to the top and some sort of spike on the bottom. I believe he customizes the height for each person so you can just stand under it without crouching. If you want to buy one, I think his name is Frank Flippen, but I don't have a number.

I went to Home Depot last night, and they told me they don't carry any metal stakes like that. I have some small stakes used to hold tiki torch poles in the ground, but would still have to have to attach the umbrella to a pole, and run the pole through the stake.

The Dunns got something from Lowes last year to make their umbrella stakes out of.

Frank's dead. No, just kidding. Only a vicious rumor that I think I started. But, to my knowledge, Frank hasn't made the umbrella poles in years. I just made one this year from a cheap soccer field corner stake that uses 3/4" PVC for the pole. The base is a welded shelf step with a spike on the bottom. I used a 3/4" PVC universal coupling for the umbrella end of the device, and since it's PVC just saw it to the appropriate length.

Hmm. In that case, I wonder what the three electrical grounding stakes I picked up at HD a couple of weeks ago were made of. :D

Obviously, whomever you spoke to didn't know what (s)he/they was/were talking about.

Also look in the gardening center. HD carries a sprinkler made by Toro that attaches to a metal ground spike (included) for around $4. I'm sure other companies make them as well.

I talked to three different employees at Home Depot, but this is Fuquay we're talking about. Maybe I should try one within the civilized world. Thanks...see you Saturday in Durham?
