Does our sport have a future...well if tonight's episode of Zoey 101 on Nickelodean is any measure, then yea...we're on our way!
Tonight (Sunday) at 8:00 Eastern DST on Nickelodean, the Kid's show, Zoey 101 (featuring Brittany Spears little sister) will use disc golf as the vehicle to promote sports teams in schools.
Check it out, and let us know what you think! I'll be watching (taping) tonight!

p.s. It's also going to be a huge boon for Innova's Discatcher's, which is the target they seem to be aiming at.

Cool I'll have to watch it. I know that they had a disc golf thing before on Nick and it may have been before I even started. :D:D

I watched it with my little brother and sister . . . it was awesome. The whole episode was dedicated to Disc Golf and they never even used the word 'frisbee'. And they also explained that a hole-in-one in DG is called an Ace.
Absolutley great exposure!
ps . About a hour before I watched it I was at a field practicing my driving and I had 3 different people come up to me and ask about the sport. Afterwords I was excited about the interest in DG then I saw a commercial for Zoey 101 and I was amazed!! Certainly an encouraging day!

What the heck? I turned it on at 5:00 PM PDT and was completely underwhelmed by a Lizzie Maguire wannabe show that was nowhere near as good as LM and the "plot" was the old "I promised a big name band for the dance....what am I going to do". Ugh.
When the heck was disc golf on???

I watched the show with my 8-year old Rachel. She and her older sister Olivia (turning 13 this week) watch Nick regularly, and already new about the upcoming episode (entitled "Disc Golf"), as they had seen ads for it.
The show focused heavily on the disc golf - it wasn't just a casual mention or side plot. While some people may not have liked the silly plot (hey, look at the demographics!), that show probably reached more potential future disc golfers than anything that has ever been broadcast to date.
For those that didn't see it, I captured a little "sound bite" that made me laugh. Check this out:

I can't get my p.c. to pull that clip up but I'm curious to to hear little about it. Any other ways that I can view it?

So when was it on and how did the plot start? You're West coast time, too.

You need the latest version of Windows Media Player (10 for XP, 9 for other systems) to play it. It works for me at work under Windows 2000 with WMP 9.
The plot starts out with the kids (6 of them) running, with the gym teacher barking at them. They decide they've had enough, and pick disc golf as their alternative to get out of dealing with him. There's some implication that disc golf is a "soft" sport, but it's all in fun.
Later in the show, the gym teacher points out that for the sport to be considered official by the school, they have to win a competition. They get paired up against some kids from a detention school (they arrive in a bus shackled together like hard core prisoners).
The team can only use 5 of the 6 players, so Zoey (Spears) has one of the girls, who isn't very athletic, sit out (lots of emotional stuff around picking who should sit out).
The competition starts and the opposing team are acting like the bullies they are (pushing, cheating, etc.). Things are all tied up, and Zoey's team gets to the 9th and final hole, and all they need to do is finish out the hole in three throws or less.
For some reason Zoey (she felt guilty I guess) says she can't play any more due to a sore wrist, and puts the other girl back in to throw the final throws (not quite sure how the team play rules worked...). As the other kids groan, she throws her first shot, which is way off base.
One of the kids from the other team goes to retrieve the disc (as though she was going to throw again from the tee - this part didn't make much sense, at least if your'e playing disc golf with the normal rules). Then the rest of the other team follows, and you guessed it - they make a mad dash to run away.
They get caught of course, and forfeit the game, making Zoey's team the winners.
Before you comment on the plot - remember the target audience!
I would think EDGE would be all over this...

Could you identify the plastic- out of curiosity :D

How come my cable company was the only one to show a different episode?

It was on Portland cable (Comcast) at 8PM Pacific.
You couldn't identify the disks really, but it was clear that the majority of them were disc golf discs, and not lids.
The interesting thing was how flat all the throws that went into the basket were - given that they had all just learned to play!

D'oh! When the time was posted as 8PM Eastern I turned on Nick at 5PM Pacific, and Zoey was on.
And it was a really lame episode with no disc golf. :)

Thanks for sharing the captured video Theo. I've read it somewhere, and it seems to get more and more true; Disc golf is the most popular, unpopular sport.
I started looking for a rerun day and time and came acroos this website that does a break down of each show. Check out the bottom under analysis,
"Disc Golf team.
I'm guessing they just made up "Disc Golf." Because you throw a disc, and you get it inside something, like golf..."

As a disc golfing family, my daughters where thrilled to watch "Zoey" playing their sport.. After just playing in their first tournament, and finding that they are having to explain the sport to everyone. I think that it really made their day to see it on Nickelodeon. After all Zoey is the thing with girls 7-12.. Even my husband who cannot stand the "girlie" shows, watched it..
I just hap[pened to be in the room (as my 4 year old daughter was watching it) when Zoey said "WE don't have to run laps in gym we can start a Disc Golf Team." I was hooked I had to sit and watch the entire episode...yes Old Biffy boy was bad mouthing the sport, can't remember the exact words but it was something to the effect of "your little fu-fu sport".
But all the plastic was Inova as were the baskets.
I treid to watch the credits to see who helped them out (besides inova) but those things cranked by so fast who knows. Because someone was making the 40 footers from behind the camera that they were splicing in to make it look like Zoey and Co. could acutally play!
All in all I thought it was good exposure for us and I'll be watching Brittany Spears little sister more often.
Now I just need the Pacific Coast Academy to buy WVO minis for their team!

For those of you with broadband:
I fond a Torrent of the episode by googling:
zoey 101 torrent disc golf
I would post the direct link here, but that would be wrong...
:p
I found it 150% cheesey, but it was nice to see the sport on TV. I found it funny that they made sure to hold the discs with the bottoms facing the camera. I guess Innova gets no specific product placement there... Only caught a brief enough glimpse of the top to confirm it was a DX disc...
I saw a commercial for it but i was a bit afraid of what might happen with it. I did get to see it though. I thought for a second, i hope disc golf doesn't get to popular, because i know so many people that don't know that you use drivers and stuff like that. I actually kind of like it like that. Big enough sport that when you play you see several people, not crowded though.
Then i thought about it. Maybe it will just make some preteen girls and a few preteen boys play it until the next episode comes on with something different.
