Have you ever heard of a place that has a disc golf driving range? I don't know of anything around here. I know that I would be willing to fork out some cash to go somewhere where the distance was easily marked so I could easily gauge how I was doing. Right now I like to go out to the football field and throw, but I would think that would be too small for all of you big arms.
I've often wondered how it would work for a driving range, but loner discs, similar to an alloted amount of golf balls, would almost be harmful if they fly much different than your normal driver. So then I thought about something like a modified ball retriever (just scoops the discs into a bin) but they might get damaged or stolen that way. Then I designed a conveyor system that has slopes on the side so the disc will slide to the middle. One person gets a specified amount of time per dollar or $5 or whatever the price, and the conveyor will takes the discs back to the person until their time runs out and then buzzer sounds to alert them it's the next person's turn.
That may sound a bit in depth but my major is electronic technician specializing in industrial controls..it was a senior project idea.

Or, you could have a certain max on how many you can throw. Say everyone can have up to 20 discs. You throw til you are out. Once everyone is out of discs, you all go pick them up, and start over.
that could also work, I just like making things complicated though :D
i have yet to play on a disc golf course that has the footage/yardage marked on the fairways like in ball golf. so what would be the point in throwing on a driving range with the footage marked out on it? a football field seems a pretty good place to go, and its free. :D

There are a few granite markers in the ground at the Winthrop University course with footage/yardage marked.

Still Waters in Govan, SC has markers every 50 feet, up the middle of the fairway. They alternate red, white, & blue so it's easy to tell how far out you are. The course is 9,000-10,000 feet, so this is really helpful on the long holes.
There was someone somewhere (OK or TX maybe) who was talking about doing a driving range for disc golf with having pro available to answer form questions and what not...I think it was twisted flyer that was talking about it. I might go and try and find that thread...
There it (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=TournamentInfo&Number=429557&page=4&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1) is! Stupid thing hid from me...Now, to get them to put one up in SLC...
i suppose i should wait for hurricane season to be over before travelling down that way......
i would love to play a disc golf course with attention to detail like that clearly attended to.

The best/most economical way would be to operate the Disc range similar to Rifle/Gun Range:
Everyone throws all the discs they want in a 3 minute period (or whatever amount of time) then blow a signal/horn etc. for you to collect your devices (discs).
But then again you run into the Cost of Real Estate.........

Wow, a conveyer belt system, although as silly as it sounds, is actually the best idea yet for getting the discs back. Man it would take some $ to implement, but I think that would work!
Either that or paying a guy to pick them up.
I find that going to a football practice complex where two fields are end to end (or very close) and throwing with a friend works great. You throw each other's discs (so as to get more throws) or while one of you is throwing, the other picks up all the discs, and then you switch sides.
The only problem with throwing with a friend is getting two people together at the same time. Most people would prefer to play a round instead!

Along the lines of the "techy" idea, I once thought it would be neat to throw discs as far out into, say, a large pond that has floating/anchored feet markers or even baskets. A jet stream current that sends discs back to a collecting conveyor belt, like mentioned earlier, would bring discs back to the driving range tees. The problems: messing with the plant and marine life's habitat; finding a floating disc that is suitable for maximum driving capabilities and is similar to your favorite discs. If you can find a shoreline where the wind blows all the time, that might work, but then you are always playing the wind.
I'd pay to play!
