I've just recently gone to throwing primarily midrange discs (buzz, glide, demon). It seems I grip lock (especially the buzz) quite a bit. My question is, what should your grip be? Exactly like you would grip a driver?

For putting, I use more of a fan grip. I know I can't get the snap I need if I try to throw a midrange like this. Any tips for midrange discs?

I used to have trouble with my grip on higher proflie discs, but after reading Blake's article and fixing some problems (specifically, getting the disc above the seam in my hand) I use a power grip for all drives no matter what the disc. I'll use a fan grip for putting and short approaches (<200') but other than that I use a regular ol' power grip.

I also find that when I grip lock it normally has very little to do with my grip. It's normally a timing, wrist roll or balence issue.

I recently started using fan grips for everything.
I can still get a good release with it & found I was throwing farther WITH the fan grip then a power grip. It feels good in my hand & I can tell when I get a good release just by the way my index finger tip feels after the throw.
Plus I rarely grip lock anymore. (but like garablador says, that may not be a grip related issue)

I found that when I am throwing hard, no matter which type of disc, I use a power grip. When I am throwing slow, which usually means only a putter/approach shot (but sometimes I may throw a buzzz really slow) I will use a fan grip.

But I agree, grip lock usually has to do with timing and not necessarily the type of grip. I know a couple of guys who use a side arm pinch grip. I don't understand, but they make it work.

Find a grip that suits you best, and that you are comfortable with. Mine is a 3 finger power grip, some use 4 and some use two. Grip will have some, but not an extreme amount of effect on the distance. It has more to do with control and timing.

Cool, so it may not be a grip problem. One of the locals told me that my problem was that I was trying to throw a slow disc (like a buzz) too fast...

Which made no sense to me. To throw it from the tee, wouldn't you want to throw it fast? Btw, I use a power grip. Anyone have the link for Blakes article?

Here's a link to all of the articles on his site:

he was probably referring to trying to throw it too hard.

grip has a lot of effect on potential distance. whether or not you are able to harness it with good timing and mechanics is another story.

i find i have to weaken my grip and let the disc have more slide than rip on most of my approach shots. i use a fork or fan grip on most of these or i tend to overthrow.

Do you throw a putter or midrange for this?

I also use a power grip for driving. When I'm throwing putters or midranges, I "relax" the power by letting my fingers come off the rim and more on the flight plate. If I'm trying to throw a Wasp or Buzz near or over 300', I go back to the full power grip, but my grip-lock tendencies also increase.
Try a birdie bag or some dirt on your fingers. If this lessens the grip lock tendencies then it is related to grip.

I use a combination stack/fan grip for higher profile discs, and it works perfectly for me. But it really all comes down to timing on the release, a power grip, fan grip, birdie grip, etc, will all result in an effective throw if your timing is good.

I use a stack/fan grip for everything besides long long drives. I used to have problems flipping mids over when I was still new to the game but when I switched to the fan grip they stablized and flew great. I get just as much D with the fan as I can with a power with the exception of drivers which I am about 20' shorter.

To clarify, I was speaking more or less of the differences between a 3 finger power grip and a 4 finger grip.

There is obvious differences between a power grip and a fan grip when speaking of distance and accuracy.

Fan grip. With no walkup. I've had much better accuracy that way.

Fork grip on mids(blunt nose discs) and putter shots outside 100'.

Powergrip on drivers (beveled edge discs).

switching to the fan helped my midrange game a lot this past summer.
