Alright, let's get the buzz going for this tournament...
First off, I have a question for Suzette. The entry fee says that the tournament is a B-tier this year, is that correct? If so that ROCKS! Please tell me it's so!
SIXONENINE is going to be rolling hard this year at the Sunrise Showdown and I'm expecting us to win more than half of all the divisions! Wootah!

Jul 10 2006, 06:48 PM
Yes, it is a B-Tier. I have already sent in the sanctioning agreement and paid the fees to the PDGA.
Out of curiosity, why would you think it wouldn't be a B-tier if I put on the flyer that it was a B-tier?

Everyone that I have spoken to about it (players) thought it was a C-tier, probably because it was a C-tier last time or something, so I just got it stuck in my head that it was a C-tier, then when I downloaded the entry form and it was B-tier, I was pleasantly surprised, but thought that it was possibly a typo (I have found lots of typos on entry forms for disc golf tournies).
Thanks Suzette!

No problem.
Hopefully the event will be listed on the PDGA tour schedule soon. I volunteered to run the event because no one else has stepped up. I figured So Cal players (mostly Ams) prefer B-tiers to C-tiers, especially if it is a two-day event. The INNColor disc will carry the same design as the logo on the flyer.
Please let me know if you find any typos on the entry so I can correct them. Especially if they are confusing.
We will see you and the sixonenine in August.
Sunrise Showdown Entry Form (http://www.socaldiscgolf.org/sub-pages/forms2006/06sunriseentry.pdf)
Thank you for filling the void then. Sunrise is without-a-doubt the best course in SC; better than EI or LaMa 18, even, by far, so it follows this is the year's top event.
I saw no typos, but having entrants realize their own divisions could possibly confuse some.
I've instructed people not to attend Eldo looking for cometition, this weekend.

Thank you for filling the void then. Sunrise is without-a-doubt the best course in SC; better than EI or LaMa 18, even, by far, so it follows this is the year's top event.
First I would like to state that I really enjoy the Ski Sunrise course.
Now that that's out of the way, I can't believe all this hype about the course being the best in SoCal. Honestly, it isn't. It's a great course, but it's nothing when compared to the Golden State layout for LaMa, or the regular 18 of Emerald Isle. Those are championship courses with more challenge and test of skills than Sunrise BY FAR.
Again, I love sunrise, but wake up and take a little inventory of the course...
#1....There is not one hole on the entire course that can't be reached in one throw by a good AdvAm or average Pro. If everything can be reached then the only time a true approach shot comes into play is when you mess up a drive.
#2....The course has virtually no O.B. Because there is no out-of-bounds the player can spray as much as she/he wants and not suffer any consequence (granted there are areas that a spray would lead off a cliff leaving a difficult upshot).
#3....The MAJORITY of the holes are very simple and short. And by short I mean around 300' (or less), or downhill.
#4....Lefty Course! The shear amount of lefty hyzers on this course is insane. A 'great' course should be more fair.
The things it does having going for it are:
#1....Elevation. Say it again...elevation, elevation, elevation. If you are unfamiliar with shooting in elevation, you might be intimidated and foul up.
#2....Along with the geographical elevation, the course has it's fair share of downhill and a few uphill shots. This will also mess with a good share of golfers, and also lend to some serious fun (i.e. overthrowing the 520' downhill hole with a putter).
#3....Lefty Course! The shear amount of lefty hyzers on this course is insane. The geographical elevation effect mixed with forcing righties to throw anhyzer is sure to frustrate a lot of golfers! A 'great' course should be more fair.
#4....Beautiful view. No hotels, freeways, skyscrapers, etc. Just endless valley and trees, maybe a couple bears too.
So that is my opinion on the course. It is very enjoyable, but it cannot be compared with EI or GSC layout LaMa in terms of course design. There are a lot of weaknesses to the sunrise course and not enough strengths for me to say that this is a 'better' course than EI or GSC.
Feel free to flame me or whatever, but I think my points are quite valid.

It IS a long way up/down the 'hill'....on a windy mountain road, on an actual Mountain. But it's doable. Having access to an automobile would be highly beneficial. Put it this way: The trek didn't deter the Drunks from making the trip to-town, twice, last time our Motley Crew invaded the TM Campground.

Important stuff to check before this competition:
Roads' condition
Your condition
Your Discs' condition
....because: The Roads still there* are on a Mountain, the Course is on [and up, and down] a Mountain, and the Discs fly differently in mountain air.
* once upon a time, before many of you were born, even, Highway 39 could be navigated from Azuza to the 'ridgeline' of the Forest [Highway 2 ][Vincent Gap]. Then sometime in the late 1970s part of the Mountain in the Crystal Lake area 'slid away'....taking a large chuck of 39 with it. The area was so large, it can be discerned on the cover of many Thomas Bros. Map tomes. One memorable Summer Morn, I made the entire Trek from Seal Beach >>> Vincent Gap....on a bicycle.

The ratings do not account for the difficulty. Micah shot two record rounds. The course was in the long position the first round, which makes his first round even better than his second. Additionally, there was more O.B. than usual. I think the compression factor is the problem. The scores that are rated around 990 to 1000 are close. Rating -14 as 1018 is not in the hunt. The compression factor is okay for scores below 1000 rating, but is too small for above. It is on a ski resort so there is altitude and topography. Three guys shot lights out, which probably skewed things.
