Where do you see this? Microtel is using Barry to promote their chain to the DG community and players have a direct link to Microtel reservations off the PDGA Home page.

From what I hear, Barry is SPONSORED by Microtel. That is why he is going to be at the Texas 10 Finals in Live Oak. Microtel is the sponosor for the $30,000 hole in one. Barry needs to be there to represent Microtel and run a putting clinic and sign discs and such on Saturday.
Hey Barry, if you are reading this, there are 2 Microtel's within 10 miles of the Carrollton Courses the week before the Texas 10 finals. :D Sure would be cool to have you in Carrollton.

oh...because i heard there was a Cooporate i.d. from the PDGA. What does Barry have to do with the PDGA, besides being a paying member, i.e. like the rest of us. The article states discgolfers can use this i.d.. However, when I called they had never heard of it. Just want to make sure i (and the rest of us) know what is going on. Not trying to cause problems, just pecking around for information.

I have tried putting in the id a few times in a few cities today, and have not picked up a discount. Maybe someone should look into it and make sure it is in the system.
And while they are checking that, maybe change the id from "golfdisc" to "discgolf".

Uhhhhh......I guess I'm just a moron, but is there some way to find out where they even have any hotels on that website? I punch in cities I'm heading to and keeps telling me "We're sorry, there are no hotel results that meet your search criteria. Please redefine your search information and try again."
How about something like "Nearest hotel is 1500 miles away in Denver"...

You can search by the state only and it'll list everything in the state.

Aug 29 2006, 04:41 PM
While it says it is offering PDGA members great rates, it does not say it is a discounted rate. It is not. I did random searches of different places and different dates and the rate is the same as any other person booking off of their website.

So I guess we are entering our corporate ID just so they can track how much business not giving us a discount can generate for them before they decide to give us a discouted rate ?

I called Microtel. Corporate ID or Rate Code "golfdisc" does not exist in their system at all.
rhett
Aug 29 2006, 06:20 PM
Does it say to use that code somewhere?
Oh well, I guess this is progress but it does me no good since the only hotel they have in SoCal is next to LAX where there are no courses.
I thought we had a nationwide deal with Red Roof. What happened to that? I thought Duesler got that one going, or am I just in la-la land on that one?
ck34
Aug 29 2006, 06:36 PM
Duesler has not officially announced the 'golfdisc' code yet so if there is supposed to be a discount, it likely has not been activated. Announcement is apparently to come in next month or so.

Go to the home page.
Scroll down to just above the NDGC endowment fund.
Click on the Microtel logo.
Read the text at the bottom of reservation form.

I would think that a link on the home page and this thread (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Board=PDGA%20Tournament%20Info&Number =560367&Searchpage=0&Main=560367&Search=true&#Post 560367) started by John would amount to an official announcement.
It does state that the code is really just for tracking purposes at this time, but the people above say it's not even in the system so I'm not sure how effective the tracking is.

His post doesn't say anything about a discount yet if one is to be available at some point. Just asks us to use golfdisc "for now" so we get credit.

Aug 29 2006, 06:58 PM
I have contacted John Duesler to have him explain the situation with Microtel. I am sure he will post soon.
The reason "discgolf" was not used as the code is it conflicted with something else in the Microtel system so they went with "golfdisc".
Microtel is a sponsor of the $30,000 Hole-in-One at the Texas 10 Finals and has been of great support. We look forward to booking lots of discounted rooms and having a great relationship with the company.
Please give this a chance to work and we will all see the rewards of corporate sponsorship.
Be positive, some things take time to get right.
Thanks

Before this thread evolves into "Microtel Nows Owns the PDGA," please allow me to clarify the three different sponsorships that Microtel now has with our disc golf community.
First, Microtel Inns has a sponsorship agreement with Barry. The terms of that agreement are between Barry and Microtel, but I am very happy that his tireless touring is now being supported by a corporate (non-disc golf) sponsor.
Second, Microtel has also made a donation to the International Disc Golf Center for $1000. They are quite happy to be involved in supporting disc golf as a whole, rather than just individual players.
Third, Microtel is underwriting the insurance policy for the Texas Ten Finals $30,000 Ace Run. This is an opportunity for Microtel to guage how their support of disc golf will be received by our dg community. They are bringing four major VIPs to San Antonio for the event, and thought that it would be a great opportunity to bundle their support for disc golf AND their support for Barry together. Barry has graciously decided to attend the tournament to help represent his newest corporate sponsor.
As far as the hotel rates...Microtel already has discounted rates throughout their national (and individually owned) chain of hotels. Corporate Microtel does not and cannot determine local rates for each of their franchisees. What corporate has done, however, is construct an online reservation page specifically for the PDGA and disc golf as as whole! This is unprecedented for Microtel and the PDGA. The page can be accessed at: http://www.microtelinn.com/golfdisc. The "GolfDisc" Corporate ID is recognized by the online reservation service, as well as the toll-free call in. The individual Microtel owners are currently being trained and informed about this unique relationship b/n the disc golf and Microtel, so don't be surprised that are not yet totally familiar with it. The agreement is only three months old at most, so the individual owners are currently catching up.
I have been posting, publishing, and writing on this newest corporate disc golf sponsor for as long as we've had it. You may read about it in the most recent Disc Golf Magazine, and in the coming Disc Golf World. I have never claimed that we get a discount, though corporate Microtel has made arrangements with specific locations to offer discounts. Rock Hill SC, San Antonio, TX, and a North Carolina Microtel are offering discounts specifically for disc golf related endeavors.
The bottom line here is that we are beginning to gain support from the corporate world outside our sport. This is clearly a long-sought and positive development for us. I am counting on our disc golf community to respond in kind by patronizing the sponsors who support us.
Finally, while I understand some people's obsession with the message board, I have always made myself available to answer any concerns or questions about disc golf sponsorship/marketing/promotion by publishing my phone number and e-mail in almost every correspondence in which I engage.
If it's sponsorship or marketing-related, please call me personally, rather than risk perpetuating mis-information that could alienate the corporate sponsors we have worked so hard to gain (i.e. "Barry SHultz free hotels provided by the PDGA?").
Thank you,
John D.

Cmon JD....There was a question mark at the end of that..it was NOT meant to be a statement of fact. Becoming offended is something that helps noone. I just wanted to hear some answers. Its one thing for Microtel to sponsor Barry, however its another for the PDGA and Microtel to sponsor him. At the current rates for hotel rooms, a two night stay can add up quickly.

I typically stay in Microtels. The last time the rate was $62 for the suite. If you stay at the same hotel often they will have a record of it and give you a discount. All you have to do is ask. I suggest you bring your own television. Theirs is mounted on top of the wardrobe and is about the size of a computer monitor.

Microtel is small comparitively. But, they're nice places, consistent, and the price is right. They aren't in every city, and not always convenient to the touristy kinds of places where they are. But, well worth it, IMO
I wonder if they will combine the PDGA credit with their "stay 9 get one free" deal...

I'm at a Microtel near the Pittsburgh airport tonight. This is the first time I'm staying at the chain, and I booked it under the PDGA member access. I've got a queen suite with kitchen and it's a decent room. Indeed the TV is mounted on top of the wardrobe, but it's not too annoying.
I'm coming back here in two weeks to see Roger Waters at Star Lake Amphitheatre, and I'll most likely stay at this property again.

This weekends Texas 10 Final $30,000 HIO is being sponsored by Microtel. The room prices we have are $55 per night which is very cheap for San Antonio.
The staff at the hotel have been very professional and the hotel is very new and full of ammenities.
The over 70 room nights we have booked so far can't be a bad thing either. :D

there is always video on these big payout aces or the insurance company won't pay out. That's how these things work. You need solid proof that the feat was achieved. otherwise, how are they going to prove that the ace was made? 3 guys said they saw it? They swear! :)
well, then i will get what i want!

Yes, you have to turn to the camera, say your name and throw without hitting anything but chains. We have had some close calls over the years, including a splach out a few years ago in Lewisville, but no one has hit the big one yet.
At the Beaver State Fling this year, there was some talk of having a brand new Subaru for an ace. I have no idea what they cost, but I am guessing they're over 20k? Anyways, the guy that was investigating the possibility of doing it (Greg_R on this board) had the hole picked out and everything. The insurance company hemmed and hawed about the difficulty of the hole and what the cost would be to the event, so it ended up not happening.
In the final round, Dave Feldberg aced the hole. :D
