I played this place not to long ago and it had some really good potential for being a great course. If someone would re-design the first two holes and a few in the back, this would be a great nine hole. Holes Three and Four are the two best holes out there. What's the word on them adding another nine and turning this place into another San Antonio premiere 18!!

This is the second layout of the original 9. Several holes were 're-done' when the fields were expanded. Holes 3-5 were the ones that had to be redesigned. The back holes 6-9 and holes 1 and 2 are the originals.
The original plans as described to me by the assistant rec director at UTSA, side note, he is no longer with UTSA, was to add another nine. I hope I can describe this right. Holes 1,2 and 3 would stay as is, now 3 is gone. From there you would go into the woods and work your way around to # 6 and then on to 7, into the woods again for a couple of holes then back out to #8 and #9, which I think changed to #'s13 and 14, then work your way back down a service road toward #1 tee box and finish back near the main parking lot.
It was all drawn out to me on a sheet a paper, and alot of clearing had to be done. The only hole that I knew of at that point that was not going to be used and would be moved was the original #4. Now that the new fields are there I do not know if there is a plan for a another 9. The last time that I talked to anybody in the REC dept. over there they were trying to replace one of the assistant REC guys and then 're-doing" the 1st nine.
I know this is probably confusing, but it is the only way that I know how to explain it without actually showing it to you. There is a lot of land that can be used and cleared to make the other 9, but I do not know what the plans are right now. I will try to give Tony a call, and see what he knows.
I am not positive on this point, but somebody told me that John Houck had designed some of the original course, but I never confirmed this with him, if he did then he may know more about the other 9.

I've worked with the university in San Marcos for years now on getting certian changes made to our course. This has not always been the easiest experience in the world. Red Tape is the thing that seems to get in the way the most. Either the people in charge could possibly work better with each other on issues dealing with the campus rec dept. or guys that like to play out there could take it upon themselves to start the process moving. We made a number of changes over the years without the school's permission so that our course would stay competetive and fun. Over the last 8 years the university has had multiple construction projects on our course and we've adapted each time. We just recently lost three good holes on our course, but from working with someone who actually cares up in the Rec. Dept. we were able to have the pins moved to three new locations.
A major issue seems to be that in a university's eyes disc golf doesn't generate any revenue for the school. Students will attend different colleges b/c they get track, baseball, soccer, etc. scholarships. The colleges will then dump money into theses facilities and programs to keep turning a profit. There are enough colleges in Texas with courses on their campuses to have teams that could compete against one another. Wouldn't it be great for the A&M team to play UTSA at their campus!!
