I figured I would start a new thread for possible new courses and temp courses in the San Diego area.

I designed the orginal layout and I will be getting further input on the layout from other players. San Diego is in desperate need of additional course and if all goes well, this could be the first of many!

Comments are welcome and appreciated!

Richard, Ryan, Dave and Kevin enjoyed a round in perfect conditions and further fine tuned the layout! Several teepads were relocated

Score (based on Par 54)
Dave -2
Ryan -1
Richard 0
Kevin 0

First round stats;

First Birdie: Kevin hole 1
First Boogie: Kevin hole 3
Total Boogies: 8
Total Birdies: 17
Total Double Boogies: 1
Total Triple Boogies: 1
Total OBs: 5

Some more fine tuning is in order and then I will be working on getting a dozen or so players out to the course.

Great job Richard! The course looks good - if you can make use of the elevation changes that's a real bonus.

In your conversations with park officials, are they willing to foot the bill for baskets, or do we need to raise funds to pay for them?

There's something about this course that reminds me of Whittier Narrows...

My current conversations with the Rangers, revolve around selling disc golf and why and how it would benifit the park. The Rangers have been very receptive to me being there almost every weekend. They were paying close attention while we were playing today and asked additional questions about the sport, the equipment and how it is played.

Progress is moving forward.

Once appoval for permanent baskets happens, then my goal will be to get the park to pay for them. If that doesn't happen I will look at some corporate sponsorship. If that doesn't happen, then I will organized some fundraisers to purchase the baskets and the teepads.

There is still a lot of work to be done. I believe there is great potential in this park. The elevation comes into play on half the current holes and makes for some very very tough shots. You will be punished if you make a mistake on the hill. The course also offers a good mix of shots. I am sure Dave, Ryan and Kevin can give everyone some honest feedback on this potential course!

One step at a time.

Since you already converse with the rangers how about talking to them about the idea of a disc golf gathering on an upcoming weekend - one where several of us bring portables to set and play, probably similar to what you guys have done at Bayside. It would give them a chance to see what the park would look like with several groups playing at once. You may not be that far along yet, but I think that's a good avenue to try out.

Jr. and I went up to Yucaipa last weekend, and even though they have baskets in the ground it was clear that the park staff was just getting used to the disc golfers. The gate staff expressed a lot of interest in where we were from, how long we had been playing- lots of demographic stuff.

Some parks employees want people to use the parks, others want them to be wildlife preserves or grass farms. It's important to find out which type you are dealing with...

That is the plan. Once all the teepads are sorted out and the pin placements, I plan to get a group together to go out and play it with a bunch of baskets. I will make sure that you are invited.

The next step is to go out with a GPS and get some really accurate measurements. Along with the measurement a course map will be created.

One step at a time!

Good afternoon,

I have a question for all the SD locals. What are the most important things that you would be looking for in a new course?

Thanks in advance for the input.

Thanks for the input so far.

1. I believe the layout is interesting and very challenging. Hopefully Ryan, Dave and Kevin can chime in on this.
2. The course is within 35 minutes of downtown San Diego, so from Oceanside it would be a little longer then coming down to Morley.
3. Once everything is approved, the plan is to have walking trails from hole to hole and also teesigns at every teepad.

There are restroom facilities around the course as well as drinking fountains.

There is also plenty of parking.

One step at a time!

Yes, the layout is very exciting. Very difficult, and very fresh for SoCal in my opinion. The layout we played has everything from 200' shots that we all bogey'd, up to 450' open pumps that have roller potential. Some nice tight windowed shots and some nice shots to open up and bomb on. Plenty of risk/reward decisions on 1/3 of the course. I can't wait to get back out there and hit it again. I need revenge for taking a 6 on a 250' shot!

OK, my appetite is whetted. Any chance a tour could be arranged Saturday afternoon? The layout needs to be geezer-tested - so far it's only been young guns.

Saturday is the Morley Monthly and then the San Diego Disc Golf Club prelimenary meeting after the monthly. I do not want to take anything away from the Club meeting.

As far as Geezer tested, I have over 10 years on both Dave and Ryan! Once all the pads are finalized, and the pin positions finalized, the course will be fully tested and you will be invited for sure!

Course has good variety. There are some technical, a few low ceiling tunnel shots. Some short risk/reward shots. A couple long holes that you can roll!

Course is still raw and need to clear some teepads and make some risk reward adjustments, but overall the park has a ton of potential. It is always fun playing something new and fresh.

Thanks Richard for the opportunity to check out the course.
I am up for helping level some teepads when the time comes.

As for things I look for in a course.
1) Maps for navigation

2) I love some kind of elevation change

3) Challenging course is important for me

Good points, Kevin. A.J. and I have played about 70 different courses over the past 2-3 years, and I think navigation has been one of the most important issues for us when playing a new course. If you want people to come back a second (or more) time, they have to be able to find their way from tee to basket to tee without too much trouble.

A well-marked message board with a good map of the course is a must. Posting a scorecard with map on the web is a great thing to do - we played Palm Desert and Yucaipa a few weekends ago for the first time, and the maps we printed off the web were a big help (we ended up passing them on to other first-timers after we finished).

Tee signs, numbers on the baskets, arrows pointing to the next tee - all a plus.

In design, pay attention to how the course will mature. Will the trees along flight paths hold up, or will they be beat to death? You don't want the course to adversely affect the environment - park officials don't like that. Stay away from tricked-up or contrived holes or shots. A good golf hole tests your ability to make the disc fly (or roll) along one or more preferred paths. Luck shots don't provide an accurate or rewarding test of skill.

Very good points from everyone who has posted. I will make sure to keep them all in my head and in my notes as I press forward.

As for animals I have seen tons of animals and yes even some snakes. The biggest animal being a deer of some sort.

I think once the layout is finalized, it will address all of what has been spoken about. Being able to navigate the course is very important to me as well. I believe the holes so far, test your ability to make good clean shots. If you risk it and don't make your shot, your score will reflect it.

I have talked with the Rangers about the environmental concerns and so far they haven't expressed any.

One step at a time!

I am going to play Morley at 9 and then drive over to the other park about noon.
