This year's Emerald Isle's Emerald Isle Open tournament will be on Saturday, March 17th, 2007. This will once again be a one-day two-round tourney with a Final-7 for the MPO and MA1 divisions. I will be seeking to step up the sanctioning to a B-tier this year.
My plan is to have entry forms available at the EI monthly this Sunday, so hopefully by posting this I really will. :o Be sure to sign up as fast as you can as this tourney only holds 90 people and has sold out quickly the last two years in a row.

Tee-sign sponsorships are available for those who would like to help out. I'm still working on the CFR artwork for the InnColor Discs.
I'll be selling 35 tee signs this year for $25 each. (Long pad and short pad individually; hole 11 only has 1 tee.) InnColors will be $30. The ever popular Combo Pack of disc and tee for $50 is back. I'm also working on a "100% Club" option where you'll get both tee-signs for a hole, an InnColor disc, and another something good exclusive for 100% Club-ers. So if you are an Emerald Isle or EIEIO supporter looking for a reason to sponsor $100, I'm trying to make a package to enable you to do so. :) More on that when I finalize the bonus item.
I can also use spotters and a "cart gang" to administer the always chaotic cart assignments for rounds 1 and 2. Please consider spotting if you forget to mail your entry in right away and get shut-out. Cart ganging should be doable as a player if you are so inclined.
I'm looking forward to another fun event.

I'm actually naturally right handed. When I was first starting to learn disc golf I bought an instructional video, "The Secrets of Snap" by Kevin Gomez. After the first lesson I went to a field to practice. ON THE FIRST THROW I snapped so hard that it broke three of my fingers, my wrist, and tore a tendon in my elbow. That is the real reason I throw left handed.
And don't bother trying to look for the instructional video, the FCC blacklisted it just three days after release citing "public safety".

You should be fine. I'm only at 34 right now. If the "5 per day" thing of the last couple of days keeps up, it should be twelve more days before I have to stare at post marks and PDGA numbers.
I will be doing the "long pad/short pad" thing since I refuse to mix the two again. That means the 86th entry received will claim the last hole for their tee-pad. Or something like that. If short pads are a multiple of five (meaning full cards of short-padders) and there are 4 or less openings, short-pads will go on the wait list. And vice versa.
It's hard to explain, so I hope y'all know what I mean.

Scot and Yvonne Jamison of Millipart. Winning the CTP on your card the second round will be a good thing again.
Bill Richards Family is once again sponsoring a big part of the trophies.
Team Rizbee/Wylot Construction are sponosring the full-color minis for the player pack.
Keith Johnson is sponsoring both Hole 6 tee-signs and is a 100%-er, as usual. :)
Skip Winship is also on-board again.
Mr. Jim's Pizza for some cool CTP prizes again. Thanks Pizza God.

If you would like to sponsor a tee sign, they are going for the incredible price of only $25 each. I will also have some SuperColor ESP Surge's soon for $20 each. And of course there will be an awesome combo deal of a tee sign and a Surge for a measly $40! Player pack this year will be a tourney logo'd lexan water bottle like we had in 2005, only in green, plus a SuperColor mini. Lunch will be included for all players. CTPs for all cards during the second round. Free drawing for all players during the awards ceremony. 2 rounds of PDGA sanctioned disc golf on a par-56 executive ball golf course with all the amenities. Man! I wish I could play!

I think that's part of how he ended up with a 78 in the first round of the Wintertime. He was hyzer-flipping this City of Pasadena manhole cover for roller shots and kept ending up OB and missing mandos. It just kept curing right too much and going too far - past the OB tape. He may have also gotten stroked for using a disc that didn't meet the flexibility requirement.

Either that or his fingers looked something like baby carrots covered in ketchup (or catsup) after the secong hole he played due to his awesome SNAPage.

If anyone feels like splurging and sponsoring both the long and short pads of either hole 5 or hole 12, the tournament would appreciate your generosity. :)
Maybe even with SuperColor and Sparkle Tsunami combo packs. :D
Email me at

Howdy all,
I wanted to thank all the people who have helped the tournament so far with sponsorships, and also to put out a last call for tee sponsors. I need to go to the printers at the end of this week, so if you can please consider sponsoring a tee-sign. The available tees are shown at http://eieio.rhett.net as blanks in the list.
If you are willing and able to sponsor a hole, please send an email to
[email protected] with the hole you would like plus the message to display. Thanks in advance for any help you can give to this tourney! :)

We're down to 6 avaiable tee signs and a fast approaching deadline to go to the printers. Thank you to all who have stepped up to support this year's EIEIO, every bit makes a big difference for this tournament.
If there is anybody else who is considering sponsoring, please contact me ASAP. The tee signs are a great low price of $25, and only $20 when you buy a tee sign and fundraiser disc together. You don't have to have a business to get a message out. The signs will be laminated 11"x17" with about an 8"x8" area for your logo or message. The tee signs are printed in full color so photographs come out quite nicely, and you can have your tee sign after the event. :)
Please contact me at
[email protected] if you would like to help out. Thanks!

Which tee will MM1 use on hole #3?
All L-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-N-G tees for all divisions except MA3, MG1, FW1-FW2-FW3, MJ1-4. The excpetions play all short tees.
That is, "all longest" and "all shortest". No middle tees for anyone!
As for why: fewer course layouts means everyone gets ratings.

As usual for this event, you can "concede the water" and move to the drop zone laying two/throwing three, as if you splashed one in the middle of the lake but without having to actually lose a disc. This is available on holes 3, 9, 15, and 16. If we get a bunch of rain and hole 10 has water, it will be available there too.
I offer this option because I am extremely confident that all players can reach the water from their respective tees. :)

I saw several different disc retreival devices used over the weekend at the Memorial. I'll be purchasing one this week! ;)
The best one was a Chocolate Lab named Bazooka - Chris and I saw her pull several discs out of the Fountain lake. I hope her owner gave her a bath afterwards!!!

as you are doing this, have you gotten competition director's approval for your change?
have you told chuck that ratings will be skewed and flawed since all discs will not be THROWN in competition therefore making several of the 18 holes invalid for ratings(you could still give chuck correct scores for the holes that all players actually have to throw discs and as long as it's at least 13 the ratings would be valid)...
i'll help you add the scores on the 14(13 if 10 is wet) holes that are "really counting towards score" so your players can get real ratings not "mulligan ratings"

I disagree. If the player would be throwing 3 from the drop zone anyway after plunking in the water, how is this a "muligan" score? I think all that is happening is that Rhett's trying to help people minimize the discs they lose in the water. The only adverse effect there would be for the EI pro shop (oops, did I say that out loud?)

That is incorrect on your part. It works. Many people cannot reach the other side but can absolutely reach the water. Many many others think they can reach the other side and will put many discs in the lake.

I guess that's kind of funny to you. The score that each player brings in for 18 holes will be rated as an 18 hole round. No extra work required. Only extra "fair" for the lesser-armed players playing in the tourney.
You might have a point if it were 300 feet to even reach any of the water at Emerald, but all the water is very reachable. Ask anybody. :D

Rhett, I don't know what you mean by "migrate" masters to open. Are you saying that pro masters will be mixed in with the open players for one or more rounds? Five masters in a field of five-somes -- sounds pretty clean to keep them together in one group. I was kind of looking to playing with the entire division for both rounds.
Do what you gotta do.

We are so lucky (or smart) to be living here in San Diego. The forecast for the weekend is for temps in the 70's with no rain.
In Virginia, players at the Virginia Team Invitational are looking at temps in the 40-50 degree range with rain, although it's in the 30's today. They're hoping that today's snowfall will melt off, but not so much that it cases streams and rivers to overflow, which would submerge the course they are playing on.

Things ran very smoothly, fun awards presentation and the payout table was available for public review before the second round began. And now there's no excuse to get lost on the course, because of the compass in our EIEIO water bottlle!
A big Thank You to Skip and the Emerald Isle crew. The course was in great shape - I know I'm proud to tell people the EI is my home course.
Thanks to the spotters and other helpers - Deano, Brendan, Emily, Norm and Monica!
Great play Carlo - congrats to the champ!!
Nacion - makes the finals and shows all why he did so (2 1000-rated rounds).
All hail the King!!!! His second round was a 1000-rated round! Great local representation in the Advanced finals from Ken and Cody.
John (#100) Kirkland smokes the Open Grandmasters. I hear the rest of his division wants him to play the next tournament with 119-gram World Class Frisbees...
Good job by Mike K. - started at a torrid pace and held the Adv. Masters at bay. Great playing with you!
Scot (Bionic Man) Golia gutted out a great victory in Int.!
Cris Brow winds Adv. Women and Laurie Stroh wins Int. Women - great play ladies!!!

Congrats to all the winners and all the players. Thanks to everyone who came to play and have fun.
I want to give a special thanks to Skip for all he does for disc golf and all he does for this tournament. We wouldn't be able to have this kind of fun without him. Seriously.
A big thanks also to Scot Golia and Dave Vincent for all their work on the course to get it in shape for the tourney. There wasn't anything to even ask for in "would be nice" category, let alone any real issues, due to their hard work. Marking the OB lines was a breeze the course is in such great shape.
Thanks to Millipart again for the sweet custom metal minis for the "every card" CTP prizes. I love those things, and I think everyone else does too. Millipart is Scot and Yvonne Jamison, and they are very big supporters of EIEIO, Stroh Family Disc Golf, and disc golf in Southern California. Be sure to embarass them with big thank yous whenever you see them on the course.
Thanks also to Bill Richards and Stroh Family Disc Golf for sponosring the jade acrylic trophies for the event. Bill Richards is a long time sponsor of EIEIO and San Diego tourneys, so thank him when you see him too.
Team Rizbee and Wylot Construction brought you the full-color minis, so be sure to thank Allen, AJ, Randy, and Allison. Allen also brought Stone Brewery on board with 3 cases of assorted beers for the free raffle at the awards ceremony, and Allison was busy making either the potato or macaroni salad for lunch (sorry I forget which) and also helping out Skip with a variety of other things.
Keith Johnson, father of Future World Champion Lorelei Johnson PDGA#13697, was once again a sponsor of the EIEIO. Thanks Keith!
Thank you to Discraft for the SuperColor ESP Surge FLX fund raiser discs that looked so beautiful with the picture that Ryan Gwillim snapped.
Thanks also to The Disc Golf Association for the ghost stamped Sparkle Tsunami fund raiser discs.
And thank you to everyone who bought one of those fund raiser discs or who purchased a tee sign. It's not a lot of money to buy these things, but your purchase makes a huge difference in an event the size of EIEIO. So thank you to everyone who supported the event.
Okay, almost done. :)
Thanks to all the spotters who were out there helping the tourney flow well.
Thanks also to Joe Graham for helping out at tourney central and spotting in the second round, and to Kent LaGree for helping Skip with the cart turn-around between rounds.
Thanks to Yvonne Jamison and Monica Watkins (I hope that last name is right!) who were helping out at tourney central all day.
I hope everyone had fun, no matter how many OB strokes they received. :)
If you helped out and I forgot to mention you, I am sorry. I'm old. :oEverybody who helped or came to play was very much appreciated as it all seemed to go pretty smoothly. I apologize for the late start and realize that the Final-7 wouldn't have been doused by sprinklers if we had started on time, so sorry for that. I'm also sorry for trying to make a poor decision to deal with those sprinklers. It all worked out in the end, so thank you to all the Final-7 players for dealing with that distraction much better than the TD did. :D
One last thing. Congrats to my wife Laurie Stroh who was bustling around tourney central doing all kinds fo things before the 1st round and during lunch, for her win in FW2. All the other ladies were impressed with how much she "caught fire" in the second round. It sounded like one of those magical rounds we all hope for. Congrats honey! :)

As y'all migh've noticed, the short pad playing divisions do not have preliminary ratings in the results posted on this website. :(
This is because there were not enough "propagators" present in the field of 15. I have been in contact with Chuck Kennedy, PDGA ratings guru, and there might still be a way to generate ratings. Sorry about the inconvenience for the FW1/FW2/MG1/MA3 players.
I will defintely be keeping this in mind when coming up with pad assignments for divisions next year.
rizbee
Mar 20 2007, 06:31 PM
How many propagators are needed? Aren't they simply players with ratings over 800?
I also saw that the ratings for the AM Wintertime Open disappeared...
rhett
Mar 20 2007, 07:30 PM
They have to be rated over 800 and have at least 8 rated rounds, or something like that.
We had three players with >780 but <800 ratings who had between 12 and 20+ rated rounds, so I'm hoping the ratings committee will agree to use them as 'gators. It makes sense since all three have stable ratings and just barely missed the arbitrary 800 cutoff.
The good news is we'll know the answer soon since the next ratings update is 4/10. :)
