My doubles partner for years has cashed as an MPO. I have not. We plan on playing doubles in some XC events as MPO. If we cash does that mean I can no longer play as an MA1? If it matters, my rating is 957.

If the TD will do this, you could pay a "Trophy Only" entry fee for your part of the team entry. Then, don't accept cash if you end up in the prizes to retain your Am status.

Just deny the money.
Many ams did that at this doubles tournament:

Thank you _MTL_. That answers my question perfectly. I will let the TD know ahead of time of my intentions.
It doesn't seem right to play for just the trophy cost when I can help my partner earn money. The logic might be right but I don't want to try to figure that out. I would only feel right doing that if we were both playing for trophies.

It only matters if you accept the cash. What has to happen in order to maintain your amateur status, is that you refuse your portion of the cash prize. Your pro partner can keep his half.

The TD should only pay your team half the payout your team wins. That goes to your partner and your portion should move down the payout ladder. Is that how they did it at the tournament MTL mentioned above?

I am not sure how they did it.....

How do you move half of the payout down ?

one additional team at the bottom cashes for that amount.

Looking at that event, it's a little tricky because you have several players declining. But the amounts need to continually be pushed down. It's possible there's enough money being pushed down to pay several teams $10 per player at the bottom.

???
Sample payouts
<table border="1"><tr><td>Place</td><td>Pays
</td></tr><tr><td>1</td><td>$100
</td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>$60
</td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>$40
</td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td>$30
</td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td>$20
</td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td>$10
</td></tr><tr><td>Total</td><td>$260</tr></td></table>
One player from 2nd declines.
Both players at 5th and 8th decline.
The $30 moved down from 2nd is more that the payout for last place so it can't go to the bottom, but less than 3rd so it can't go straight down.
Does it go to one side of third place so third place becomes $50 ?
like this:
<table border="1"><tr><td>Place</td><td>Player 1</td><td>Player 2</td><td>Pay 1</td><td>Pay 2</td><td>Team
</td></tr><tr><td>1</td><td>Accept</td><td>Accept</td><td>$50</td><td>$50</td><td>$100
</td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>Accept</td><td>Decline</td><td>$30</td><td>$0</td><td>$30
</td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>Accept</td><td>Accept</td><td>$30</td><td>$20</td><td>$50
</td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td>Accept</td><td>Accept</td><td>$20</td><td>$16</td><td>$36
</td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td>Decline</td><td>Decline</td><td>$0</td><td>$0</td><td>$0
</td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td>Accept</td><td>Accept</td><td>$14</td><td>$10</td><td>$24
</td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td>Accept</td><td>Accept</td><td>$10</td><td>$6</td><td>$16
</td></tr><tr><td>8</td><td>Decline</td><td>Decline</td><td>$0</td><td>$0</td><td>$0
</td></tr><tr><td>9</td><td>Accept</td><td>Accept</td><td>$2</td><td>$2</td><td>$4
</td></tr><tr><td>.</td><td>Total</td><td>Payout</td><td>.</td><td>.</td><td>$260</tr></td></table>

Now that the thread topic question has been answered, lets drift on to other things...
Gnduke: Either formula for paying down probably is fine so long as it gets paid down. The rule just says to pay it down. Interesting question though.
What I've always wondered is what to do if the money is declined all the way down? I had a tournament a couple of years ago where an uninformed amateur woman paid full fee in the pro women's division, came in second and declined the cash. Third and fourth place were trophy-only amateurs playing up. I'm not sure what we did with the money. We might have paid it up, since there was no more down from there! :D

TD's option.....pay expenses with it. Go buy a beer, other beverage, or dinner for your staff. Or whatever.

The event is allowed to keep anything that rolls off the botom (item 1.10.A of the competition manual).
<font color="white">The interesting thing I just noticed was item 1.10.C.2 of the manual which states that players leaving before prize disbursement do not relinquish their prizes, but will cover any shipping costs.</font>

That only works if your display options match that color background. Mine don't.

At the USDGC Par 3 Shootout everyone was lumped into open, there were no divisions. The TD paid the pros cash and gave the ams a voucher for merch at the USDGC pro shop. Worked out great for everyone.
