I know that this was supposed to be a post on the Augusta Classic, but something has come up and i will definietly post about that event in a couple of days. I have been asked to be on the Conan Obrien show this wednsday. They are filming the show in San francisco and i will have a seven minute bit on the show. The show will be aired on wed May 2nd/3rd at 12:30 on NBC. This is a great oppurtunity for our sport and i will do all i can to show disc golf in a positive light. So tune in your TVs on wed. night and if you like what you see email the show and show them are support. See you on your TV!

They are filming this in San Francisco Wednesday afternoon to be aired that night. Scott K. with DGA sent a few Mach III's and a box of yellow Gumbputts to be thrown around (possibly by the audience also). Big kudo's to Jonah Schmidt. He was originally approached to be on the show and he did what he could to bring in the PDGA "big guns" so it would be a heavier hitting disc golf promotion.

I saw that line of people when I dropped the baskets off to the stage crew yesterday. Suprised they all got in, cuz it was CRAZY long. MTL is right, its live on Wednessday in front of a studio audience. Thanks to Steady Ed for inventing the BlowFly! The producers were going to cancel it because they were worried Conan would hurt someone. BlowFlys bumped us back into the mix again (DGA Gumbputts will be used for visability sake). BIG ups to the DGA for stepping up and lending baskets, discs, and rolling with the last minute changes in true Hollywood style!

Yes, we were sitting in the dressing room, minutes before going on air, and they broke the news that we were getting bumped to the Thursday night show. At rehersal Conan makes his first putt (with the gumbputt) and Feldberg missed his! Then Conan got pumped and started driving 'em hard up into the top balconys of the Orpheum Theatre. Sucks cuz Robin Williams wanted to get in on the putting too and he won't be there Thursday to do it. He'll be the San Francisco course pro in no time though. Kenny, the line started for general tickets at about 9am and from what I heard entry is free but on a first come first serve basis. We'll do it all again tomorrow...

Sorry Matt, I didn't see your earlier post. The producers of the show wanted to do a segment on the new course in Golden Gate Park and have two of San Franciscos best pros show Conan how to putt etc. They contacted the San Francisco Disc Golf Club, and then they contacted me to take the stage. We figured why constrain it to just SF disc golfers, lets showcase disc golfs top players period. The fact that I would probably have to step aside was a no-brainer to me, although I was concerned about not touching on the SF disc golf subject altogether, thats a minute detail in the grander scope of things. Our top pros don't get enough media coverage anyway, and when a good opportunity arises why not give them a chance to take the true spotlight. I passed the torch to Feldberg, and the rest is soon to be history.

When you call it "disc golf", people look at you funny. When you say "frisbee golf", people usually go "oh" and can at least make a mental picture even if they've seen it. :)
I've switched to calling it frisbee golf to get that "oh", and then quickly follow it up with "but we call it disc golf because 'Frisbee' is a registered trademark of the Wham-O corporation".
It seems to work out a lot better that starting with the cold stare of "disc golf" right off the bat without the frisbee qualifier.

That was a great segment for disc golf. Dave looked pretty nervous, but Conan was very good about it. I like how Dave started getting all into it when asked "why don't we just call it frisbee golf", and Conan threw in a well-needed eye-roll and kept things moving.
I don't think there was anything negaqtive about it all. The hippy lettuce jokes were all directed at the The City and I didn't notice any of that stuff trying to be tied to disc golf. So I say "most excellent!" :)

I was impressed with how far Conan could throw a putter.
It may be pretty close, but top balcony has to be good for a beginner.

I thought his over reaction to his blow thru was priceless. It truly captured the emotion of a good putt gone bad..
Question. Was that Avery and Nate Doss busting his balls for missing the scooby putt ?

Way to represent Dave! And big thanks to Conan for giving a plug to the GG Park Course (though this probably means that we'll need to find a new place to play soon which *hasn't* been promoted on national t.v.) :o

That was great! They made disc golf look fun, and I'm sure many people will do some research on it and hopefully try it out. I wish they could have shown some clips of a tournament or play on a course to show some holes and the challenge involved. With the time constraints they had, they did a perfect job. I really liked how the crowd went wild.

That's what was missing. I simple 10 second clip of a DG hole-drive-approach-putt would have been worth 1000 words. Any expsosure is good exposure as long as it's not 5.0 exposure.

I was thinking Feldberg bombing a roller on Johnny B's video down in Gainsville and hitting the camera man's tripod and him giving a "what the hell look"
That woulda been great!

The hippy lettuce jokes were all directed at the The City and I didn't notice any of that stuff trying to be tied to disc golf.
After some thought, I think the appropriate response when someone asks about drugs in disc golf is:
"We're different than other Pro sports, in disc golf it's the non-professional players who use drugs..."

I also love the way Conan said "Let's just call it frisbee golf!!!!!!!!!!!" I am so sick of saying disc golf, those words DO NOT roll off the tongue like FRISBEE GOLF.
I couldn't agree with Conan more! I think the word "frisbee" has acheived the status of words like "kleenex" and "xerox". These names have become so ingrained into society's everday lexicon, that they transcend any single brand name and now represent the whole genre.
As someone mentioned before, I also refer to our sport as "frisbee golf" anytime I am talking to the uninitiated.

the problem with calling it frisbee golf is copyright law and that the name frisbee is a trademarked name.

I think it's a little ridiculous to trademark a name that was taken from the NAME of another company. I mean, it'd be like RCA trademarking the name television, and everyone else having to refer to it as a moving picture box. It is what it is.

good think "baseball" was not trade marked.....we would be calling it a laced ball game

The actual object is called a flying disc, the name frisbee is the trademark name. Can't fault the company for coming up with a name that stuck and became part of the main stream.
It's like with soda - they are all soda, but some people will just ask for a coke implying they want any type of soda.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the point about trademarks. But, in the same vein; If somebody asks me for a kleenex I'm not about to to say, "Sorry, I only have a box of facial tissue." ;)

The real problem is that Whamo, very stupidly, made an issue of it. Instead of getting tons of free advertising, they shut down the use of a name they controlled. Talk about stupid!

I sent them about 15 minutes of Dave's best drives and putts from the Skylands Classic, and DGTV sent them video as well. But I think that even though they didn't show any disc golf footage, it was still an awesome step in the right direction. Nice job Dave!
Maybe next time!

MTL I have an early Sports Illustrated magazine which has an article about the flying disc. In this article they use the word frisbee. This issue of SI dates to before whamo trademarked the name, so i believe whamo did not come up with that name but they took the general use term from the public and wrongfully trademarked it. They should give it back for public use
I wonder where our sport would be if this had not happened and the game was called fribee golf for the past 30 years. I would think we would be much further ahead than we are now.

That was one of the best things I have ever seen!!! And whoever said Conans reaction to the cut threw was perfect is absolutely correct!!! Ever single one of us wants to do that after a putt like that just slips out the back!!! And then of course the excuse of WHY it cut threw!!! This thing must be bent or something!!! Lol......Almost sounds like those dang chains werent reset!!!
My buddy DVRed it and I must have watched it ten times the night/morning it was on!!!
Thanks to Dave DGA and Conan for a great episode!!! Who knows maybe this will get us our lucky break!!! How great was it to see the crowd going absolutely WILD?!?!?!

Personally I like the use of disc and think frisbee would have hurt more than helped. I think Conan's commentary summarises it nicely, "a Frisbee is something you toss over by the pretty girl and then go pick up while trying to pick her up."
A disc is something you play golf with. :)

Conan was doing his bit on famous people's quotes regarding current news. Some tomb was found and Larry King's quote was "Tell him to give me my frisbee back."
