What are some of the things that a TD did that you liked?
Examples:
Raffles, putting contest, Ring of Fire, Free entry drawings, ect.
I just would like to get some ideas from other disc golfers from around the country.
Thanks

Personally, I like the Ring of Fire....especially when there over 100 involved...its kind of cool to see all those discs flying to the same place at the same time.

SO there isnt a TD out there that has done something different as far as games go, or something out of the ordinary that you like?
I thought I would get some good responses/Ideas.

While the event was cancelled and this idea never came to fruition, I thought it sounded awesome. I may have played in this tournament just to witness the hilarity that would ensue...
there will be two angles filming the ctB...
So...let me explain...during the break on the second day and also while the final scores are being tallied, we will hold a CTb...the ctB is similiar to the traditional CTP, however there will be no pin...In the CTB we will use a human being, in this case Ole' bobby Popawraith... Bobby will go out to 300 feet with a hula-hoop, held above his head....Connected to the hula-hoop will be a set of chains that connect to Bobbys belt....He will be wearing a helmut and shoulder pads, and of course a CUP!!!! If peolple continue to miss bobby at 300 ft. we will cheer and coerce bob to move in, until someone aces him!!! Winner will recieve a cash prize as well as a long lasting memory...Its gonna be sick...So.....y arent you coming?

My favorite TD's are the ones that make the tournament end of things run smoothly. The frills get old quickly when you play tournaments every weekend...

These are the out-of-the-ordinary things the IOSeries is doing that I like:
<ul type="square">
Trophy-only entry fee options for all players, all divisions.
Pick-your-own player packs.
Pro-rating the value of Discraft's sponsorship back to the players who throw Discraft in the form of a bigger, better, "Throw Discraft" player pack.
Pro-rating the value of Discraft's sponsorship back to the players who throw Discraft in the form of better prices on Discraft premium plastic.
AM IV for PDGA members who have a rating demonstrating that they are 40 points below the AM III cap.
Bumping non-members out of Rec and Int based on IOS ratings.[/list]
Sidegames, I don't much care about. I go to a tournament to play disc golf. I can play sidegames at the county fair!

Bruce, move to Texas. I want to play your events.
At the Sherando Spring, Brandon did the basket raffle during the awards and you had to be present to win. I thought that was a good idea to get people to hang for the awards.

Start and finish on time. Get the awards over with by 4:00 and let players get on the road Sunday afternoon. Just do it.

My arthritis would enjoy living in Texas. Probably my allergies too. My tomatoes and hot peppers would feel right at home!

Pick your own payout.
Start on time.
Put all of the details on the board or handout so a player never has to come to tournament central and ask a question.
Cold water on the course in several places. (I'm in Texas)
If you are using one card per group, allow the players to fill in the cards. Make sure you emphasize that they fill in the full names, division, and starting hole. This saves the TD and staff a great deal of time especially at lunch.

Fresh fruit on course. A few tourneys around here will have a few coolers with grapes, bananas, carrots, sometimes apples, on ice. Doesn't cost that much, and it's great, especially during long rounds.
Having well-organized volunteers who can take care of a lot of issues so players don't have to track down and interrupt the TD.

Grocery stores will sometimes sponsor disc golf tournaments by providing fruits/produce in lieu of a cash donation. The same goes for bagel or donut shops who often dispose of "day-old" inventory simply because it was not sold the same day it was prepared. These are forms of sponsorship which can add value to any event.

I have played at some of these events that David mentions. It's great to see disc golfers shake other peoples' hands, handle their dirty discs, handle themselves when urinating in the bushes, then put those unwashed hands on every loose grape or into every cooler of ice they see on the course.
I also think every TD should make a handout of the course layout and rules instead of talking for 30 minutes at the players' meeting where no one will remember anything the TD just said.

Many players don't read handouts either but at least there's documentation to point to if any questions.

If you weren't working Saturday you'd see just that---a detailed handout, and I intend to mention only 1 rule in the players meeting. The other 29 3/4 minutes will be devoted to safety warnings.
And thanks a lot for your post---now that you've mentioned it, I don't think those grapes are ever going to taste quite as good again.
On topic---still, far and away my favorite thing a TD can do is run the event smoothly---players meeting on time, round starts on time, prompt awards ceremony. Standing around waiting is my least favorite disc golf activity.

I think veteran disc golfers have developed better immune systems just from the incidents mentioned above so they can tolerate "tainted" fruit and "finger lickin' good" anything. :D

Oh well, I guess I'm not a "veteran" disc golfer and will never be one. Just a little common courtesy by rinsing off your hands would be nice.
Also agreed David, players' meeting starting on time and awards over and done with at a reasonable time, things running smoothly.....to heck with all the gimmicky activities.
(And off topic David, wish I could be there Saturday, hope it all goes well!) :D

You left out "fishing through a fetid creek for OB discs" on the list of added flavors for the grapes. I suggest sticking with the bananas----and don't eat the peel.
Off topic---know you can't make it but if you get a whim, drop by in the next week or two. Stoney Hill is in its best condition ever, and it's not likely to last.
