The AM's here in VA have been talking about how the PDGA is just for the touring pro's. I have been tring to defend the PDGA as much as I could. Now I too am seeing that this fact seems to be true! I have sent 2 e-mails asking for EDGE info and a kit or what ever to help me get disc golf started in our schools. I have recived NOTHING! I see and read about how Des and Jay are doing all of these events to promote EDGE. I am sure they have something to work with. Me NOTHING! I had one meeting with a athletic director and wround up with egg on my face having no paper to show him. I know the touring pro's are the face of disc golf. They are only the national face though. What about the bare bones of disc golf ........ us local guys.......us am's!!!!!!!! The ones that the schools, parks and rec directors, and general public see everyday. We are also the ones that are working our butts off to clean the courses, build the courses, etc. It is going to be very hard for me to pay $50.00 for a membership that only does my player ranking for me. I mean hell "Disc Golf World News" is the only thing I use to have to look forward too. NOW THAT IS GONE!!!!!
Sorry about the fussin'; but I am seeing that if someone is not a top 25 player or turing pro you are 2nd fiddle to the PDGA!

You need to contact Innova---not the PDGA about the EDGE program....I am teaching 200+ kids disc golf this summer, and Innova was very helpful and very quick....PM me if you need good contact info....or go to the Innova website for the same info...Good luck

EDGE info is available from edgediscgolf.org. Read the site, for printable materials, go to http://edgediscgolf.org/edgecurriculum.htm
When I do EDGE demos, I bring at least 3 baskets and a bucket of beginner friendly discs. I usually run putting drills, teach a bit about the different grips and throws, as well as the basics of the game. I usually finish with what I call the super ring of fire. Take all 3 baskets put em together and do Ring of fire with triple the catching power. The kids dig that.
I don't think that top touring pros benefit as much from the PDGA as you think, I think they have more resources because their sponsors, their network of friends and acquaintances they have met through years of touring help them out a bit. Some top pros do demos, but I am sure they get help from local ams and organizers to gain these opportunities, this is not something that the PDGA sets up.

I will agree - the PDGA is not EDGE. Contact Jon Lyksett at EDGE (
[email protected]) and I'm sure he'll send you some brochures and possibly some examples of the curriculum packets. Innova is also a good source, as they are the main supporter of EDGE.
Many of us are in the same boat - wanting to build the player base by teaching kids how to play. EDGE is a great vehicle for this. My son and I are about to go on a 20-day disc golf marathon, raising funds to put EDGE programs in our local schools. Jon @ EDGE and Innova have been very supportive of our efforts - I'm sure they'll help you out.
Here's my take on the PDGA. It was originally established as a organizing body for a national network of tournaments, what has evolved into the "Pro Tour." That has continued to be the prime directive - building the player base and teaching the game to others has always been a lower priority. That is not to say that the PDGA does nothing in that regard, but just that sanctioning tournaments, providing player ratings and crowning world champions are what the PDGA puts most of its effort into.
Keep up the good work!

hvnafit,
I've personally sent two email messages to you, after having your requests to the PDGA forwarded to me by Dan "Stork" Roddick. In those messages, I gave you directions on how to go to the EDGE website and download the program prospectus, sample lesson plans, and other information to take to the local school. My personal office telephone number and the EDGE toll free number are also on the EDGE website. Also, my regular signature file on here contains a link to the EDGE site.
As said before, EDGE is NOT a PDGA program. It is an independent, non-profit educational foundation with a very small staff. We try to be as timely as possible, but we all have other jobs that take our time, as well.
If you are unable to find the information on the website, please PM me here and I will call you and walk you through it.

Note, also, that there is some really good stuff about youngsters and disc golf in the latest issue of Disc Golf World, which you should have received by now.
