Here's my latest brainstorm while playing all by myself at the Ice Bowl this weekend: I like to call it the Over / Under Challenge and it only applies when there is only one player in her division, for instance, when only one pro woman shows up to an event.
First, the TD and the player agree upon a scoring goal for the player. If we were to use the Icebuurrrg Open from Saturday as an example, then the TD and I could have agreed upon shooting even as the goal.
Then each round would be the challenge: If I was to shoot better than even both rounds, I'd have two unders which would equal a double payout. So if my entry was $40, I'd get $80.
If I shot over even the first round and under even the second round, outcome is null and void and I'd get my $40 back with nothing added, nothing taken.
If I shot a +6 and then a +4 like I actually did this weekend, that equals two overs and the TD gets to keep my $40, no payout to me at all.
It's a gamble for both parties. For the single pro woman, it creates pressure and that competitive edge that we miss out on when no other women show. For the TD, it creates the chance to keep some cash from the pro division without complaints from participants and they can keep the cash or use it however they choose. And if neither TD nor player can agree on a scoring goal, well, I guess the challenge wouldn't happen.
Pros and cons? What would be the major barriers to this happening? I'm looking at a long winter ahead of me with no competition and am seeking some sort of solace.
