Bite your tongue!
Stone Brewing Company is the best microbrewery in the world. Their AB Ale, Ruination IPA, Old Guardian Barley Wine, and Smoked Porter are all in the top 20 of best beers made in America. And don't even get me started on how silly good their Anniversary beers from the last two years have been.
And unlike some other microbreweries who have some embarrassing missteps, Stone has never released a single "clunker" of a beer. (Yes, Dogfish Head and your 'Lawnmower Light', I'm talking to you...)

Bridgeport IPA ON TAP is an amazing brew while fine dining...yup.
Hmmm, the 'piney' comment above is a taste-aspect category that I need to re-consider. While I do appreciate the citrus/grapefruit undertones of several notables (IE Avery IPA) there is a strong taste that sometimes turns a heavily anticipated beer into just another of the IPAs that I will not purchase again...though I'll drink it everytime when handed to me. ;)

There's a great new brewery that has some DG connections. They donated many kegs to the TX. State Championships a few weeks ago keeping everybody happy no matter how many discs they threw in the water! (I lost 6 - got 1 back...over 150 discs have been found so far!)

Drank some of these last night and WOW
This 8% belgian ale was brewed to commemorate Pisgah's 200th batch. Packed with over 1# of cherries and raspberries per gallon, the Red Devil balances delicately beteween tart and not too sweet. Treat yourself to half a Pisgah Stout on top for some chocolate covered cherries.
Plus he has a new Bravo Hop which is filtered through the hops so its only on draft at the Brewery.

"Q: How much hops is too much?
A: When done deftly, too much is never enough. In other words, extremely hoppy beers, if they're balanced and well crafted, can work regardless of how much hops you add. But at the end of the day, any monkey can add five wheelbarrows of hops to one barrel of beer and it will be crushingly bitter. Maybe some sadomasochist freak will like that experience, but the majority of hard-core beer people do want complexity, not just harsh bitterness."

Jeff is very right. Having ready access to Stone's specialty brews at my neighborhood market - and occasional access to the brewery - is one of the perks of living where I do. No one else is so consistently excellent with diversity.
And the happy news: they're looking to expand a bit. Check their website for more.
Cheers.

Just picked up a 6'er of Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale and a bomber of the Smoked Porter.
The only Stone I've had is their IPA and it was decent. I'll be finding out if Stone is overrated or not. Frankly, I just like having more choices, overrated or not.

New Belgium Brewing Rolls Out Three Brews To North Carolina
Fort Collins, CO - February 3, 2009 - New Belgium Brewing, makers of Fat Tire Amber Ale, is happy to announce that it's entering Tar Heel country. Beginning March 2, 22-ounce bombers of Fat Tire, 1554 and Mothership Wit will become available at grocers and beer and wine shops in Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro, Asheville and Wilmington. By mid-April these same beers will be pouring in select bars.
"North Carolina is exciting for us as it marks our first foray along the eastern seaboard," said Bryan Simpson, spokesperson from New Belgium. "We're looking forward to engaging in a new community and getting our beers in front of North Carolina's savvy beer-drinking crowd."
New Belgium is nationally recognized for its progressive environmental practices. By tapping into one of its core values of environmental stewardship, consumers can enjoy their new favorite beers even more knowing they were produced at a brewery where choices like reduced greenhouse emissions, green building techniques and water conservation are a cultural way of life.
"We're excited to be in this vital market," added Ryan Beach, Area Manager of The Carolinas. "It's been a smooth opening and we look forward to quickly becoming a fully engaged member of the community."
For North Carolina residents looking to learn more about New Belgium, check out the New Belgium newsletter, The Tinkerer: http://www.newbelgium.com/the-tinkerer or New Belgium's site: www.newbelgium.com. (http://www.newbelgium.com.) For those who love man's greatest invention (the bicycle) as much as New Belgium, join Team Wonderbike today: http://www.teamwonderbike.com/ .
Here are the beers New Belgium is bringing to North Carolina:
Fat Tire
Like the ageless delight of pedaling a bicycle, Fat Tire Amber Ale's appeal is in its feat of balance: Toasty malt flavors (sorta like biscuits just pulled from the oven) coasting in equilibrium with crisp hoppiness. Delicious stability - in the world of sometimes-precarious beer flavors - is perhaps what prompted one consumer to say, "This beer just makes you smile."
Fat Tire's depth of flavor, achieved with neither a disproportionate sway toward hops or malts, tandems well with a full spectrum of today's engaging cuisines. Salmon, dry-aged cheeses, roasted chilies, omelets at midnight, sweet potato French fries and just about anything with grill marks or garlic are just a few of the edibles we like to partner up with our Amber Ale.
1554
Other than being dark in color, 1554 has little in common with Porters or Stouts. The beer is fermented at relatively high temperatures using a European lager yeast that imparts a refreshing, zesty acidity. Chocolate and coffee tones in the nose give way to a surprisingly clean finish. With 1554 we hoped to create a beer similar to what folks enjoyed nearly five-hundred years ago without ignoring five-hundred years of technological innovation.
Mothership Wit
New Belgium's first organic beer offering, Mothership Wit elevates the zesty Wit or White beers of Belgium with wheat malt, coriander and orange peel spicing - all of which are organically grown. The Mothership experience begins with a cloudy pale yellow appearance capped by a creamy white head. Next is the alluring, slightly spicy, floral nose. The refreshing taste is the result of a gravitational balance of citrus and sour flavors held in suspension by a bright burst of carbonation.
New Belgium beers are now available in 21 states across the United States. Fat Tire is the brewery's flagship brew, with its other year-round and seasonal Belgian beers recognized for their mature flavors, unique history and high quality ingredients.
About New Belgium Brewing Company
New Belgium Brewing Company, makers of Fat Tire Amber Ale and a host of Belgian-inspired beers, began operations in a tiny Fort Collins basement in 1991. Today, the third largest craft brewer in the U.S., New Belgium produces seven year-round beers; Fat Tire Amber Ale, Sunshine Wheat, Blue Paddle Pilsner, 1554 Black Ale, Abbey, Mothership Wit and Trippel, as well as a host of seasonal releases. In addition to producing world-class beers, New Belgium takes pride in being a responsible corporate role model with progressive programs such as employee ownership, open book management and a commitment to environmental stewardship.

Asheville: Dogfish Head Mountain Weekend w/ Sam Calagione
Finally, we get to announce our "big news" we've been hinting about for a few months now. Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head is coming to Asheville! And not just for a dinner, we snagged him for an entire weekend. There will be three events planned, giving you plenty of chances to meet the man behind the "off-centered ales." The full press release is below with more details to follow next week!
We hope you'll join us!
March 13, 2009
ASHEVILLE, NC--Bruisin' Ales (www.bruisin-ales.com), the third top beer retailer worldwide by RateBeerBest 2009, is pleased to host Sam Calagione, founder and President of Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales in Milton, Del., for a "Dogfish Head Mountain Weekend" in Asheville, May 15-17.
Well-known in the Brewniverse, Sam is one of America's most vocal supporters of the craft beer movement-which is booming in Asheville-creating what he calls "off-centered ales for off-centered people." He is also the author of three books: Brewing Up A Business, Extreme Brewing, and He Said Beer, She Said Wine, co-authored by Marnie Old. He has most recently been featured in The New Yorker and seen on NBC's "The Today Show."
The weekend will begin on Friday evening with a private tasting, talk, and book signing with Sam at Bruisin' Ales. Saturday evening is Pint Night at The Thirsty Monk (www.monkpub.com) with a special "Brewer's Choice" line-up on draft.
The weekend will culminate on Sunday with the off-centered "Dogfish Head Beer Brunch" at Zambra (www.zambratapas.com), featuring a gastronomic six-course menu with Dogfish Head's 90 Minute IPA, Red & White, Immort Ale, Midas Touch, Palo Santo Marron, and another "super-secret" brew.
The Friday private tasting and Sunday brunch will be ticketed events. The Pint Night is free to attend. All information, including times, full brunch menu, and ticket information will be posted at the Bruisin' Blog, www.bruisin-ales.com/beerblog. (http://www.bruisin-ales.com/beerblog.)

New Samuel Adams LongShot Variety Six-Pack Hits Shelves Nationwide
New Samuel Adams LongShot(R) Variety Six-Pack Hits Shelves Nationwide Featuring Winning Brews From 2008 American Homebrew Contest(R)
2009 Homebrew Contest Call for Entries Underway
BOSTON, April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- As America's interest in homebrewing and craft beer is at an all time high, Jim Koch and the brewers at Samuel Adams are proud to foster the talents of aspiring homebrewers by offering their unique recipes to craft beer drinkers across the country as winners of the 2008 Samuel Adams(R) American Homebrew Contest(TM). Samuel Adams Founder and Brewer Jim Koch, was joined by a panel of industry experts to select California-resident Alex Drobshoff's Traditional Bock in the final round of judging. Alex's beer bested more than 1,300 consumer entries.
Alex's beer will be joined in the LongShot six-pack by California-resident Mike McDole's Double IPA and Samuel Adams Employee Carissa Sweigart's Cranberry Wit. Mike's Double IPA won acclaim from the judges in 2007, but due to the worldwide hops shortage and a desire to preserve the integrity of the beer's recipe, calling for seven hop varieties, Mike elected to delay the brewing of his beer for the 2009 LongShot package. All three winning homebrewers brewed their winning recipes alongside the Samuel Adams brewers in Boston and their bragging rights also include having their recipes bottled and available nationally in the 2009 Samuel Adams LongShot Variety Package. Available for a limited time starting in April.
Samuel Adams employees compete in an annual homebrew competition. This company tradition, started in 2001, encourages passion and knowledge for craft beer while paying tribute to Jim Koch's "first" batch of Samuel Adams Boston Lager(R), homebrewed in his kitchen in 1984. Jim and the other brewers at Samuel Adams selected three finalists from all of the employee entries. These three employee homebrewers attended the 2008 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) and asked festival goers to taste and vote on their favorite. In the end, Carissa Sweigart's Cranberry Wit was the favorite and will be featured in the 2009 LongShot variety pack alongside the Traditional Bock and Double IPA.
"The number and quality of entries submitted to the Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest and our annual employee contest continues to increase year after year," said Jim Koch, founder and brewer of Samuel Adams(R). "As a homebrewer for more than 25 years, I'm proud to see that passion for great beer is passed on to our employees. The brewing creativity and innovation in both the employee and consumers homebrews is more impressive every year. Alex's Bock, Mike's IPA, and Carissa Sweigart's Cranberry Wit are all exceptional brews that push the limits and demonstrate the endless boundaries of big flavor and the infinite ingredients available to today's craft brewer."
A panel of industry judges including our dear friend, the late William Brand of The Oakland Tribune, Tony Forder of Ale Street News and Marty Nachel, author of Homebrewing for Dummies, joined Jim Koch in selecting the 2008 consumer winners. Together, they determined the final winning consumer recipe based on the American Homebrewers Association Beer Judge Certificate Program guidelines. Each beer was carefully evaluated by style category and judged on how well the style characteristics and flavors were exhibited.
The 2009 Samuel Adams LongShot variety six-pack will be available nationwide in select retail stores in April 2009 for a suggested retail price of $9.99. The variety pack will include two bottles each of Alex Drobshoff's Traditional Bock, Mike McDole's Double IPA and Carissa Sweigart's Cranberry Wit.
ABOUT THE WINNERS AND 2009 CONTEST
Alex Drobshoff's Traditional Bock is a bright copper German inspired bock with a complex, full bodied mouthfeel. Underlying notes in the brew include hints of rich plum and cherry aromas paired with a toasty, malt flavor. He was inspired to create his Traditional Bock after listening to his friends travel encounters that described German beer as something that only could be experienced in Germany. Alex was up to the challenge and set out to replicate an authentic German bock right at home in California. The two year attempt to create this brew resulted in an award winning German inspired bock with a complex, full bodied mouthfeel. Alex's beer features hints of rich plum and cherry aromas paired with its toasty, malt flavor make this a great beer to linger over on a cool evening
Mike McDole's Double IPA was inspired by the brewer's own deep appreciation for hops. Known in his West Coast Homebrewing community as having an affinity for hoppy beers, Mike used over six pounds and seven different varieties of American hops per barrel for his Double IPA. An intense beer that explodes the senses, Mike's brew is pale orange in color but makes up for it in a robust and malty taste. A full-bodied pale ale with strong spicy, floral and citrus aromas, this Double IPA is a hop-lovers' dream come true.
Carissa Sweigart, a national sales representative for Samuel Adams currently based in Colorado, chose her own hometown ingredients from Cape Cod as the inspiration for her winning Cranberry Wit. A delicious blend of cinnamon, orange peel, coriander and grains of paradise with hints of cranberry, Carissa's brew is bright, fruity and refreshing. The perfect beer to sip on a chilly day, this crisp brew is flavorful and well rounded.
2009 AMERICAN HOMEBREW CONTEST
Aspiring homebrewers have another shot at fame by entering the 2009 Samuel Adams(R) American Homebrew Contest(R). Interested beer drinkers can check online at www.SamuelAdams.com (http://www.SamuelAdams.com) now for contest rules, regulations and information on purchasing a homebrewing kit. In addition, they can download Jim Koch's video, "The Art of Homebrewing" offering his personal tips on making a successful homebrew. Entries must be received between April 15 and May 1 and the winners will be announced at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival.
The Samuel Adams(R) American Homebrew Contest(R) continues the tradition first established with the 1996 Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest and is a natural link to the company's roots. Jim Koch knows first hand the challenges and the personal rewards of creating a quality homebrew. He brewed the first batch of Samuel Adams Boston Lager in his kitchen in 1984. More than 20 years later, Koch is a recognized pioneer of the U.S. craft-brewing revival, and he continues to push the boundaries of brewing and follow his passion for elevating the craft beer-drinking experience.
THE BOSTON BEER COMPANY BACKGROUND:
The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father's attic. After bringing the recipe to life in his kitchen, Jim brought it to bars in Boston with the belief that drinkers would appreciate a complex, full-flavored beer, brewed fresh in America. That beer was Samuel Adams Boston Lager(R), and it helped catalyze what became known as the American craft beer revolution.
Today, the Company brews more than 21 styles of beer. The Company uses the traditional four vessel brewing process and often takes extra steps like dry-hopping and a secondary fermentation known as krausening. It passionately pursues the development of new styles and the perfection of its classic beers by constantly searching for the world's finest ingredients. While resurrecting traditional brewing methods, the Company has earned a reputation as a pioneer in another revolution, the "extreme beer" movement, where it seeks to challenge drinkers' perceptions of what beer can be. The Boston Beer Company strives to elevate the image of American craft beer by entering festivals and competitions the world over, and in the past five years it has won more awards in international beer competitions than any other brewery in the world. The Company remains independent, and brewing quality beer remains its single focus. While Samuel Adams is the country's largest-selling craft beer, it accounts for just under one percent of the U.S. beer market. For more information, visit http://www.samueladams.com

Well, that's your problem - you drank one of the worst tasting beers in existence. It's an absolutely appropriate choice and a Pittsburgh institution, but let's be honest - an awful beer.

Jerry, come to Hawk Hollow in October & sample on a few of the homebrew contest entries. Myers, Gangloff, Parrish, & Irwin (and who knows what other mad zymurgists might show up) are producing beer as good or better than just about anything available commercially. And if you think IC tastes like beer (I'm not sure I do), these brews will taste like something completely different to you.

New Samuel Adams Longshot Variety 6-Pack Hits Shelves Nationwide In April
Boston, MA (January 2010) Samuel Adams is proud to announce that New Hampshire resident Michael Robinson's Old Ale and New Mexico resident Ben Miller's Barleywine bested more than 1,300 entries to be chosen as the winning homebrews in the 2009 Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest. Samuel Adams Founder and Brewer Jim Koch homebrewed the first batch of Samuel Adams Boston Lager in his kitchen in 1984 and 25 years later, Koch encourages homebrewers across the United States to test the boundaries of brewing, recognizing the most talented homebrewers for their innovative and creative brews year after year through the Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest.
In addition to Mike and Ben's winning brews, Samuel Adams also honors Employee Homebrew Winner Jeremy White for his Saison. All three winning homebrewers had the opportunity to brew alongside the Samuel Adams brewers in Boston. Their bragging rights also include having their recipes bottled and available nationally in the 2010 LongShot Variety Package, hitting shelves in April.
Samuel Adams employees compete in their own homebrew competition, a tradition the company started in 1996, encouraging employees to channel their passion and knowledge for craft beer while experimenting in their own kitchens as Jim did 25 years ago with his great-great grandfather's recipe. Jim and the other brewers at Samuel Adams spend a day tasting the homebrews submitted by novice and more experienced homebrewers in the company, and choose three finalists that stand out from all of the employee entries. These three employee homebrewers attend the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) and ask festival goers to taste and vote on their favorite. Last September, GABF attendees chose Jeremy's brew as their favorite.
"Year after year, I am impressed by the quality of entries submitted to both the Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest and our annual employee contest," said Jim Koch, founder and brewer of Samuel Adams. "When I first started homebrewing 25 years ago, it took me almost an entire year to find the right ingredients and to perfect my homebrewing techniques to recreate my great-great grandfather's recipe for Samuel Adams Boston Lager, so I know how much time and dedication it takes to create a beer you're truly proud of - and are comfortable admitting to others that it's yours! It's my hope that through the Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest, I'm able to give homebrewers who really love the hobby and are passionate and committed to brewing better beer the opportunity to achieve the ultimate homebrewer's dream, making their beer available to beer lovers across the country; one that I have come to realize with Samuel Adams Boston Lager. Mike's Old Ale, Ben's Barleywine, and Jeremy's Saison are exceptional brews that are truly a testament to homebrewers' ability to produce unique and flavorful beers that continue to push the limits of brewing."
A panel of industry judges including Jason Alstrm and Todd Alstrm of Beer Advocate, Jay Brooks from Celebrator Beer News, Julie Johnson of All About Beer, Bob Townsend from Southern Brew News, and Tony Forder of Ale Street News joined Jim Koch in selecting the consumer winners. Together, they selected the winning brews based on the American Homebrewers Association Beer Judge Certificate Program guidelines. Each beer was carefully evaluated by style category and judged on how well the style characteristics and flavors were achieved.
The 2010 Samuel Adams LongShot variety six-pack will be available nationwide in select retail stores beginning in April for a suggested retail price of $9.99. The variety pack will include two bottles each of Michael Robinson's Old Ale, Ben Miller's Barleywine, and Jeremy White's Saison.
ABOUT THE WINNERS AND 2010 CONTEST
Michael Robinson's Old Ale is a malty English-style brew boasting notes of dried fruit, nut, and caramel. A slight bitterness balances the combination of five malts in this full bodied beer. Light brown with reddish highlights and good clarity, the ingredients of this English-style brew are all American with the exception of the yeast which is distinctively English. Created to enjoy on cold nights or as an after dinner treat, Mike's Old Ale is 9% alcohol by volume, about twice that of the average beer. An experienced homebrewer, Mike was recognized as a finalist in the 2008 Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest, as well as in the 2007 Samuel Adams Patriot Homebrew Contest.
Ben Miller's Barleywine is a dark red, flavorful brew with rich plum undertones to complement its caramel malt flavor. A self-proclaimed 'hop head,' Ben used several varieties of citrusy American hops in this beer, creating its resiny aroma followed by clean bitterness. Ben's Barleywine is his 100th homebrew, brewed to commemorate two years of enjoying the hobby.
Jeremy White, who works in the IT department at Samuel Adams, channeled his love of Belgian beers to create his Saison, a classic Belgian-style brew. Jeremy's flavorful, refreshing and lighter-bodied beer is brewed with Grains of Paradise, an exotic tropical spice also found in Samuel Adams Summer Ale. The peppery flavor is complemented by a slightly sweet aroma with hints of vanilla and citrus, making this beer the perfect cool down to a hot summer day.
2010 AMERICAN HOMEBREW CONTEST
Aspiring homebrewers have another shot at achieving the ultimate homebrewers' dream by entering the 2010 Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest. Interested beer drinkers can check online at www.SamuelAdams.com (http://www.SamuelAdams.com) in April for contest rules, regulations and information on purchasing a homebrewing kit. In addition, they can download Jim Koch's video, "The Art of Homebrewing" offering his personal tips on making a successful homebrew. Entries must be received between May 15 and June 1 and the winners will be announced at the 2010 Great American Beer Festival.
The Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest continues the tradition first established with the 1996 LongShot Homebrew Contest and is a natural link to the company's roots. Jim Koch knows first hand the challenges and the personal rewards of creating a quality homebrew. He brewed the first batch of Samuel Adams Boston Lager in his kitchen in 1984. Now, 25 years later, Koch is a recognized pioneer of the U.S. craft-brewing revival, and he continues to push the boundaries of brewing and follow his passion for elevating the craft beer-drinking experience.
When Samuel Adams began offering its homebrew contest almost 15 years ago, it was Jim's dream that it would be a springboard for aspiring brewers, bringing attention to the quality of homebrewing, and perhaps launch a career or two. To date, Bob Gordash, winner of the 1996 LongShot Homebrew Contest, and Don Oliver, winner of the 2006 Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest, have gone on to become professional brewers, turning their homebrewing hobby into a career as Jim did 25 years ago.
That beer was Samuel Adams Boston Lager, and it helped catalyze what became known as the American craft beer revolution.
I was recently introduced to a beer I actually enjoyed. Being a coffee lover, I found this beer to not taste so much like other beers:

The same goes for their KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout). Tasty!
Good stuff... :)
