Fling XII

Wow hard to believe that this is the 12th one of these that we have run. The first one was called the Old Zoo Fling and was held at the Old Zoo picnic area in Griffith Park a pretty special location we could only put 14 holes in there (I think that first one was 12). But it was fun having lunch and Disc Arcade in the old animal caverns.

It was hot that April day in 1997 but nowhere near as hot as it was this past Saturday! According to the National Weather Service, Downtown Los Angeles recorded a high of 96, tying the record set way back in 1892. We thought that we were set with 12 gallons of ice water but we had to get 7 more gallons at lunch and that was not even enough (note to self if very hot, TRIPLE the water you think we need).

Speaking of hot; in the morning round, John Ryan earned dollars and praise with an ace that banked off the road hole wall into basket #16. Chris Horn won the Open crown and set the 2nd round course record with a sizzling 51 matching the 51 of the 1st round course record set by Dave Vincent our Closest To Champion. Why all these course records? With Mr. Hadders marvelous changeups almost every layout at the Ridge is new. Chris Horn also garnered Candy plastic with his victory in Disc Shuffleboard, but he lost the overall Disc Arcade title to Steven Thomas, the Mini Accuracy winner. Our 1st overall Disc Arcade title was awarded to Steven when he bested Chris in an exciting title match of Bump Disc. Other Disc Arcade results: Mini Accuracy; 2nd - Don Vincent, 3rd - Shane Anderson. Disc Shuffleboard; 2nd - Jesse Ising, 3rd - John Butler.

Winners got special DISC stamped Candy Destroyers and the top 3rd of the field received DTW Gift Certificates. Andrew Choate showed once again that Chavez Ridge can reward those that work on the course with his victory in the Rec Am division. The popular (and shy?) Gilbert Rabago triumphed in the Novice division. We are happy that the Fling is such a family event! Father and son players included the Babins, Vincents, Simmonses, Lauritsons and Stockhausens. A bevy of couples graced us as well the Jamisons, Butlers, Strohs, Houston/Baldwins.

Allison Wylot, Laurie Stroh and Yvonne nabbed the Candy in their divisions and Brian Bowland took the Advanced Am by 5 throws. Young John Tompkins experience at the Ridge paid off with a victory in Intermediate Am and Cliff Towne avoided getting Chavezed for the Grandmaster Candy. Jim Ditch stayed under par to wrestle the Candy from a gnarly Advanced Grandmaster field and in the Juniors it was Babin the Younger (Brandin) that waved a Candy Destroyer in the face of his good buddy Jesse Ising. Mark Hauser came down from Santa Barbara to snack up the Candy from a strong Adv Masters group and in the Senior Grandmaster division we kept the winner Bill Richards up here until the end of the Awards ceremony, before releasing him to drive 2nd place finisher, John Tallent back to San Diego.

The next big planned expense for DISC will be to upgrade the tees at the Ridge. Please look for and respond to our call for help on that. The spreadsheet shows that DISC made $740 off the Fling XII. The Fling is designed to do just that - make about $10 per member and give everyone a good time. We hope you all had fun! Please thank our sponsors (Discovering the World and Innova) and all those that helped with the Fling XII including but not limited to Dave Hadder, Cliff Towne, Jon Freedman, Andrew Choate, Rafe Jenny, Brian Bowland, Allison Wylot, Chris Horn and Metallica.
