Here are, I believe, the top 10 SSA permanent course layouts that can be played without a special setup for an event. Note that only 18-hole courses from PDGA-sanctioned events are included.

<table border="2"><tr><th colspan=1> Rank </th><th> Permanent Course Location </th><th> Event </th><th> City </th><th> State </th><th> SSA </th></tr>
<tr><td> 1 </td><td> Foundation DGC </td><td> 2007 Gateway Open, Blue tees to Blue pins </td><td> Centralia </td><td> Illinois </td><td> 72.1 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 2 </td><td> Idlewild </td><td> 2007 Disc n Dat Bluegrass Open </td><td> Burlington </td><td> Kentucky </td><td> 70.8 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 3 </td><td> Hornet's Nest </td><td> 2008 Carolina Clash, Hornet's Web </td><td> Charlotte </td><td> North Carolina </td><td> 70.5 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 4 </td><td> Renaissance Park Gold </td><td> 2006 FriZZak Open </td><td> Charlotte </td><td> North Carolina </td><td> 70.4 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 5 </td><td> Blue Valley </td><td> 2006 City of Fountains </td><td> Kansas City </td><td> Missouri </td><td> 70.4 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 6 </td><td> Maple Hill </td><td> 2008 Unity Summit at Maple Hill, Airplanes Tees </td><td> Leicester </td><td> Massachusetts </td><td> 70.3 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 7 </td><td> Moraine State Park </td><td> 2006 Ironwood Open, Gold Tees </td><td> Portersville </td><td> Pennsylvania </td><td> 68.9 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 8 </td><td> Tyler State Park </td><td> 2006 Eric C Yetter </td><td> Newtown </td><td> Pennsylvania </td><td> 68.6 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 9 </td><td> Borderland State Park </td><td> 2006 Borderland Spring Fling, Blue - Blue </td><td> Easton </td><td> Massachusetts </td><td> 68.1 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 10 </td><td> Nockamixon State Park </td><td> 2005 Pro Worlds </td><td> Quakertown </td><td> Pennsylvania </td><td> 67.8 </th></tr>
</table>

Here are the top SSA temporary course layouts that I believe can only be played when set up for an event. Note that only 18-hole courses from PDGA-sanctioned events are included. Also, various USDGC layouts from the past 10 years would likely comprise most of this list so only the highest SSA layout was listed.

<table border="2"><tr><th colspan=1> Rank </th><th> Temporary Course Layouts </th><th> Event </th><th> City </th><th> State </th><th> SSA </th></tr>
<tr><td> 1 </td><td> Winthrop Univ. Rec. Area </td><td> 2004 United States Disc Golf Championship </td><td> Rock Hill </td><td> South Carolina </td><td> 75.2 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 2 </td><td> Still Waters Farm Disc Golf Course Gold </td><td> 2006 Tournament Players Championship </td><td> Govan </td><td> South Carolina </td><td> 73.0 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 3 </td><td> Akitas Run </td><td> 2001 Ozark Open </td><td> Vichy </td><td> Missouri </td><td> 71.3 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 4 </td><td> El Rio Golf Course </td><td> 2004 Tumbleweed Open </td><td> Tucson </td><td> Arizona </td><td> 71.3 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 5 </td><td> Nasu Highlands Golf Club </td><td> 2007 National Championships - Japan </td><td> Tocigi </td><td> Japan </td><td> 70.2 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 6 </td><td> Vista Del Camino Park </td><td> 2007 Memorial </td><td> Scottsdale </td><td> Arizona </td><td> 68.3 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 7 </td><td> Campgaw Reservation </td><td> 2005 Campgaw Opening Day Mighty Gaw layout </td><td> Mahwah </td><td> New Jersey </td><td> 68.2 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 8 </td><td> Silver Creek Ski Area </td><td> 2000 CO Champ </td><td> Fraser </td><td> Colorado </td><td> 67.3 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 9 </td><td> Red Hawk </td><td> 2006 The Player's Cup </td><td> Crystal River </td><td> Florida </td><td> 66.6 </th></tr>
<tr><td> 10 </td><td> The Crucible </td><td> 2006 Flying Eye Open </td><td> Athens </td><td> Georgia </td><td> 66.4 </th></tr>
</table>

Remember, the former list is permanent courses and those with permanent polehole positions that the baskets can be moved to at any time, if the course pro wanted to move them there. The latter list is for temporary courses played typically with portable baskets on land that doesn't normally have a course such as ball golf courses, or ski resorts.

These are really just informal lists and I had to draw up some rough guidelines somewhere. It is understood that many of the permanent courses have shorter pin positions that are used for normal play, and these layouts will be subject to whatever pin positions the course pro chose for that week. This just happened to be the tournament setup.

If you have any additions or corrections, please feel free to note them. Although keep in mind that many courses and tournaments that you intuitively think would make the list fall well short - an minimum SSA of around 66 or 67 is needed to make these lists!

Only the single highest SSA layout for each course from over the years was listed.

Nockamixon isn't playable in that layout any more is it?

No permanent courses west of the Rockies. They are essentially all in the northeastern quadrant of the US if divided into quarters. Not one in the top 5 states with the most courses: Texas, Iowa, Cal, Wisc, Minn although Highbridge Gold is 67+ when maxed out which wasn't the case at Worlds.

It is possible that many others on the list don't exist or are not playable in the same configurations. But they did at one time and were one of the highest SSAs ever - that's what these lists are capturing.

Silver Creek may be suspect also. I think someone told me that it might have actually been more than 18 holes but was mislisted.

Okay....I wasn't sure your criteria since you mentioned "...can only be played...", and Still Waters can never be played again. Glad you've included it, though, for the memories.

Still # 4 baby! :D

The best I can get designing in Georgia has been 3 in the low 60's. :p

Not enough land around existing courses to make a longer track, and not enough money to buy the land to do what I want.

One day though, one day. ;)

Moraine BABY!!!!! Look at the ssa's from all of our events and we are just about on with our par 66 1000 rated tees!! I'm so glad it is working out the way we designed it. And Chuck.....hole 15 is no easy 3 :) lol. You need to come back and check out the course now!! I think you will find it looking and playing very very nice.

Moraine always had great potential and I'm glad it's working out. Looking forward to get out there and also see Deer Lakes.

5 Blue Valley 2006 City of Fountains Kansas City

I remember this tournament. Watching the pros throw the downhill bomber holes w/ 40 mph headwinds was pretty funny actually. my wife and i set up chairs and ended up watching pretty much all day.

I believe Silver Creek was only 18. The permanent course at Silver Creek turned out to be less than permanent. Good mountain course with good variety. The temp course was set up as a second course for the tourney. This course also no longer exists. The course was LONG both uphill and downhill. Lots of fun though, I think it was a par 72 or near 72.
