I find myself in a weird place this year. I was born in WV and have respect for the hometown boys. My heart is in the Big House, I've been a Michigan fan my entire life. Most of my family back home hate me now because of the Rich Rod situation. Most of you will slam me because of the App State situation last year. All that said, I live in Georgia and have for 25 years now. I hate UGA and the SEC, but I think UGA will win a National Title this year.
I also thin that USC and the Pac-10 are way over rated. USC has been the powerhouse for years. Finally some of the other teams are doing some recruiting and keeping up with those boys. As usuall they will be the pre-season #1 and as usual they will find themselves in the Rose Bowl and not playing for a National Title, they just aren't good enough.
Let the slamming commence.

Ohio State sucks. They should be banned from the rankings until they again win something that matters. All they were any good at was committing penalties. And yes, five years ago is a long time.

Since I moved to GA all I have heard is SEC BS....I have watched many SEC games and I think that the Big XII is probably better this year...Some of the SEC games are hard to watch due to horrible offenses, that is not a problem in the Big XII.
With that said I think the National Championship may have two Big XII teams in it.
If OU can get by OSU which I was calling that as soon as OU grabbed the top spot. I could see a UT vs OU rematch in the National Championship game.
I', sure that OSU will be beating Tejas by 5 touchdowns at half time and lose which seems to happen annually....I think OSU will get sniped by Tejas Tech 83 -72 also and keep them out of a BCS.

You ARE correct we don't know if the POKES are better than OU. But I can tell you that the Pokes Have never been this good before and Gundy seems to have them in totally all business mode. Texas only has quality wins of OU and Missouri (both passing teams). This WILL be the first "multi-dimensional" team that they have faced. I UNDERSTAND everyones skepticism ( I am the worst when it comes to the boys because I have been through heck rooting for a sucky team) but this team is great (from what I have seen). The last time they were any good was 88 and this team would crush that one. this WILL be the hardest game Texas has had all year!

I wont have a problem coming back on here to say that Texas was a better team, if they win. I am a life long Cowboy fan that knows what OSU usually looks like and this team just does not look like anything that I have ever seen out of them. The bottom line is that you Longhorn fans should do your scouting (like I have done mine) and know that OSU is a 4 heaeded montser on offense. If the O-line controls the line of scrimmage, they will run and run until your freshmen safties cheat a little much and byant will blow right past for 2 to 3 TD's and return a punt and / or a kickoff for a score as well, one of the 2 backs will rush for over a hundred, and our star tight end has 70 lbs on all of the DB's. Look at the QB passer rating. This will be tougher than any game that Texas has seen yet. As far as the schedule is concerned, I just stated a fact that you all have NOT faced a balanced offensive attack like this all year. Straight up this is our 2nd big game and this is your 3rd. So you have an advantage there but the advantage for the boys is that no one beleives that they can win (except for them and those of us that know what we are looking at). The Pokes are an amazing team this year and sat will prove that. A team that has 68% underclassmen will have some lapses. Then we will see how the longhorns act on here.

OkSU is giving ut a pretty good game....but looks like ut will win. Either way, I hope the 'horns are banged up a little for next week. I do not think that really anyone will stop the ut offense or the Texas Tech offense. The game will be decided on a few defensive stops, maybe turnovers.

Colt is the best player in college football. Texas can't stop the run and has trouble on special teams. Those are 2 areas 2 watch for. It was a great game . Every time OSU scored or there was a turn over the energy just left the stadium. Everyone around us were nervous as a cat. I had a great time down there. The Texas D line is good.

What you talking about Vinnie? Tech has as much to lose as Texas. However, Tech is still Tech and Leach is still Leach. That is in Texas' favor. However, Lubbock is a hellhole to play in and the horns seem kind of tired. I am definitely concerned. I only wish Toogood was still licking for Tech. ;)
Bigbuck, OSU looked real good. They exposed Texas run defense. Where were the linebackers, and d-line on run plays. The game with OU should be a helluva game.

Texas, in the past, seemed to get scared or have the voodoo put on them up there. One thing is for sure, Colt will carve up the red raider defense. It's just weather or not their offense can keep pace. The Red Raiders better be ready for the next week as the Pokes will be there next!

The game is on! ESPN Game Day will be in Lubbock for the game. We sure have had our kicker problems. We enjoyed the last few years with Alex Trlica (NEVER missed an extra point in four years....that is a bunch in our offense). This year we're lucky if we get two in a row. We had to go to the stands to get a decent kicker. We've been very lucky that our kicker has not had to decide a game this year so far...Red Raider fans are sweating bullets for these next three games...the 'real' season (along with the four 'pre-season games and the 'warm-up' games). I don't think our offense will be completely stopped. Nor will the Texas offense. So, the key to this game will be defenses getting a stop or two, teams limiting turnovers, and staying away from crucial penalties (early season was really bad for Tech, better lately).
FYI - If any DGers are coming in for the game, we play at Mackenzie at 2:00 pm (at Levelland at 9:30 am). PM for lodging.

Lmao--tech has the 113th rated schedule out of 119 teams---do you really think you're that good??? You couldn't stop Nevada or Nebraska--- and no thats not the Nebraska defense of old you beat either---u even let dreadful A&M out gain you--they're TERRIBLE
You do have the advantage of everyone gettn wasted and flinging tortillas. Yea, Tech will score a few points, but not enough to make a difference unless the Horns just dont show up-which I doubt after the scare last weekend. You might have a puncher's chance, but that's it. More than likely Tech goes 0-3 or 1-2 the next three games(u might lucky against Oklahoma's bad pass defense) and the REAL Tech shows up

Oh the fun. The students have been camping at the stadium since early Tuesday (something like 10K students get in on a first come basis). Today, there is supposed to be around 2,000 campers! Coach Leach and the other head coaches are hand delivering pizza and BBQ (from the owner of Triple J Brewery).
There is to be a 'blackout' for the game. Rather than the 'white' trends (Miami Heat, etc), the stadium will be a 'blackout'...kind of neat for Halloween and all (although strange for 'Red' Raiders).
Yes, evening games are always tougher as crowds get 'prepared' for the game. We value teams having a tough time playing here. If you call in a 'hellhole'...whatever. Our home record is pretty good (although not against ut admitedly...but whose is). Crowds are loud. Games are fun for everyone (old, young, opposing fans that I know of for the most part). Tortillas have not flown for several years, yet it still gets brought up (my son said that there likely will be some in the air for this one though).
The ESPN Game Day is to set up on the Engineering key on Friday. They fence off the area behind the set for a select few. They will be checking signs, etc. More fans are allowed around the set. Apparently, NU has the record for a Game Day attendance at 17,000. There is a good chance that this will be broken.
Colt McCoy was born in Hobbs, NM and grew up south of Abilene, so this is somewhat of a homecoming for him. In his interviews he seems to be a classy young man...no trash talk, etc. In my opinion, he is the leader for the Heisman. Things can change over the next few games...especially during head to head games.

Thanks Jamie...let's see if others do as well. I too have been more scared of OSU than tu. I think OSU is more rounded. For the TECH vs tu game, we really should've beat em worse as they only had a few long plays, otherwise we ran on them, passed on them, and held them on defense as stats show. However, tu, I think did have 'unusual' mistakes of many dropped passes and then of course the dropped gimme interception late in the game. After the OSU game we have an open week to prep for OU.

Similar to the tu run of the big guns in the Big 12 South, it will be very, very tough to get through without a loss. The Tech schedule was good in that we built up to these games. When the schedules came out a long time ago, it was 'when' we win our first seven games, if we can win the next few, we'll be in pretty good shape going into an off week to prep for OU on Nov 22 (hope our players aren't looking ahead).

I'm still figuring out OU, but I know that they have a good defensive line. Who cares, as our offensive line is great, and Harrel will drop the ball over them. I think the OU secondary will be our primary attack area. I know that the OU offense is good and will score. Our defense seems to gell and get a little better each week. They are very young with only a few seniors. At this time I see a game similar to the Tech/tu game.

Oh no, I think any rational argument favors Texas out of the three teams. Basically, Tech doesn't pass the laugh test due to that arsewhipping they took. I mean no team that lays down like that in the biggest game of the year can claim they deserve a shot to be annointed the best. After that, it is pretty easy: the Okies lost to Texas on a neutral site. It doesn't get any clearer than that.
The pointlessness is the act of choosing two teams and saying "You two are annointed, the rest of you, bye."
tbender
Dec 04 2008, 09:56 AM
You can't throw Tech out. By doing so you are discounting OU and glossing over UT's loss.
Texas lost to a team that was whipped by Oklahoma. Ergo, no one is favored in the conversation.
james_mccaine
Dec 04 2008, 12:49 PM
That is a faulty analysis, imo. The logical conundrum of A>B, and B>C, and C>A doesn't mean that A, B, and C are therefore equivalent, it just means that rationale is inconclusive and another rationale is needed.
The alternative rationale is as follows: Tech did not just lose to a great team on the road, they got throttled and quit. Everyone intuitively realizes that the nature of that loss was unique, and separates them from UT and OU. In other words, I think most reasonable people are quite comfortable throwing Tech out.
That being said, all analyses are questionable, that is why a playoff is needed. I don't discount the idea that Tech could win an eight team playoff, I just think that the nature of their loss eliminates them from an off-the-field contest between them, Texas and OU.

James, fair point. I still there is something to be said about losing to a team that was annihilated by the team you beat.
I also think people want to remove Texas Tech because they aren't one of CFB's "elite" programs, so they take the route you mention -- call it the "Traditional Program" factor.
The biggest error was the Big12 letting people from other conferences (as they are part of the BCS poll) decide the winner.
Meanwhile, in the real Division I championship playoff, App State got upset by Richmond in the second round, so the dynasty is interrupted. My Salukis, alas, were booted in the first round by UNH.
James Madison hosts Montana and Northern Iowa hosts Richmond with the winners headed to the championship game. Mr. Madison is the #1 seed and remarkably spry and able for a man of his age.

GT - LSU should be a good one. If Tech wins, they might re-re-negotiate with Paul Johnson. Viva la flexbone!
Ugh. Why can't Tech win a game in a stadium 2 miles from campus? Now 0-5 in the GA Dome.

Epic smashing of the Nittany Lion's this past weekend by my beloved Hawkeyes! I'll be in Iowa City in two weeks for the night game (yes he said night game) of the Iowa Hawkeyes vs. the Michigan Wolverines. Should be a battle and if the Hawkeyes win look for you old pal Jerry Chesterson to be leading the charge out onto the field!
What's up with PSU's mascot? Is it just me or is the weakest most frail looking mountain lion on the planet? It looks like something my mom made for me on Holloween.

Congrats, that was a helluva game. Interviewed Hakeem on the sideline. Leach pulled a Leach. The Goth lineman went nuts after the game and is gone for the year. No guns up for Vinnie. Not much more I could have asked for. :)

I very weak one.
Is a hawkeye a type of hawk, or the eye of a hawk?
The term "Hawkeye" originally appeared in the book, The Last of the Mohicans, and was later used in its plural form to describe the people of Iowa. Soon thereafter, the University of Iowa borrowed this nickname for its athletic teams.
From The last of the Mohicans, "Natty Bumppo, known as "Hawkeye" the "American hero" and escort to the Munro sisters, long-time friend of Chingachgook. Also known to the Indians and the French as "La Longue Carabine" on account of his long rifle and shooting skills."
The logo you are probably used to seeing on the side of the helmets is called the Tigerhawk. It was created by Hayden Fry (from Texas, descended from one of the Texas First Families; his great-great-grandfather fought beside General Sam Houston in the Mexican War) when he took over as head coach in 1978 to help change the image at the school. It worked, we've been money ever since!

Daniel Day-Lewis' character is what y'all are named after????
Why then is a bird running around the field? The hawkeyes are conflicted.

First off, Daniel Day Lewis came after The Iowa Hawkeyes. His character did come before that. Not sure if he was the inspiration or not, but if he was then that is AWESOME. That is a bad arse character to be influenced by. It could also have something to do with the the America Indian and the spirit of the Hawk. After all Herky (the actual mascot) does look similar in some whays to American Indian mascots they used in rituals. Iowans are very proud of their American Indian heritage! ANF
The bigger question is across the state with the Cyclones. Their logo is a tornado, their name is the Cyclones (which is a hurricane) and their mascot is a Cardinal. That makes no sense, there are not hurricanes or cyclones in Iowa and what does a Cardinal have to do with either a tornado or a cyclone?

I'd rather be 1-0 than 0-2, as Pryor is against USC.
And USC isn't that good this year. Barkley throws like one prepping for the pros he will join in a couple of years, and gets about half of his completions called back because someone was holding. The PAC-10 is going to be very unpredictable throughout conference play (witness the Ducks annihilating Cal this past weekend). Unpredictable until the bowl season, when they will beat every lousy Big-10 team that sneaks into the postseason.
Florida and Texas this year.

Of the 5 major conferences (SEC, ACC, Big 10, Pac 10, Big 12) the Pac 10 ranks only ahead of the Big 12 when it somes to talent at the pro level. The bowl games are a shame because generally speaking the Big 10 teams travel into the other teams back yard for what is essentially home games for SEC and Pac 10 teams.
All that said ... right now I'd rank the conferences as follows ...
1) SEC
2) Big 12
3) Tie Big 10, ACC & Pac 10

Iowa got no love from the Human Polls because of a close win over Northern Iowa (who has since gone on to set the world on fire in their division) & NW Arkansas. Iowa is 3rd in the computer polls. I'd love to see an Iowa vs Texas matchup of the undefeated teams in the Rose Bowl! First things first, lets get Michigan State. They've beat Iowa like 8 times in a row in East Lansing

A win is a win is win. Dude had ICE in his veins! I am so glad I was camping this weekend and didn't get to see the game. I heard the score on the radio with 10 minutes left in the 4th Quarter ... Iowa down 24-14. I was reserved to the fact that the dream season was over. I litterally went to the bathroom, drank a beer, and came back to check the score and we won 42-24. There's magic this season at Kinnick Stadium!

Yep. Lost the first 3 starting RB's and a starting QB. Its a miracle, litterally, that they made it this far. I fully expect them to lose this week @ Ohio State and just hope they can pull it out against Minnesota in the final game of the year for a respectable 10-2 record.

Speaking of Big 12 games with a Texas team vs. an Oklahoma team, did you see the game last night? My son is a freshman at OSU, so I was watching for him in the stands. Didn't see him, but saw quite a game. Both teams came back from 14 pts down, and OSU won with the only FG of the game with :02 left.
Even though I live in Dallas, I will watch the RRR on TV, and go to the great State Fair of Texas when it is less crowded.
