If one were to be planning a disc golf vacation, where would be the best place to go? I'm polling to find the city with the most courses, and best courses in the country. This would also be a summer vacation (July, or August).

Minneapolis and St. Paul Minnesota. There are close to 100 courses within 50 miles with some true gems: Kaposia, Blue Ribbon Pines, Highland SSA, North Valley, and many, many more. Plus, if you are traveling with non disc golfers, being a major metropolitan area there are plenty of other things to do. Lots of restaurants, outdoor sports and Mall of America.

Just hope it's not the year 2001 when you visit, or you could end up like several pro and high school football players did.
AHHH the 100's - how I miss those temps, living in GA now, instead of Arizona.

If I personally had a week off to play disc I would make a b-line for Ludington, MI. This is where the MI state finals are held every year and the west coast of Michigan is beautiful in the summer. In the city of Ludington there are 4 top notch beautiful and challenging courses with minimal crowds. Tons of great camping is also available in the area. 20 min. south of Ludington is (in my opinion) the best course I've ever played - Flip City DGC in Shelby, MI.

EDIT: sorry I didn't see that you are from Holland, so you probably already know this. Oh well to anyone else out there considering the same thing check out Ludington..

Just found this on 1000rated.com. From an interview with Greg Hosfeld: With over 1000 courses played I would value his opinion..

http://www.1000rated.com/2008/12/interview-gregg-hosfeld/

"I took the ferry from Wisconsin to Ludington, MI. Doing my homework, I found that there were 3 courses in Ludington, but Id only have time to play one before heading north for the show. I flipped a coin and went left. When I pulled into the parking lot for The Leviathan, I was under-whelmed. That didnt last very long.

It was a big course but a big arm wasnt necessary to score well. The multi-shot holes had well defined landing areas and the use of topography was as good as any course I had seen. I liked every hole on the Leviathan disc golf course. It was a real treat to play.

Just down the road an hour or two was another gem. Flip City!! This course, for me, was more about the feel of the place. The work that Bill McKenzie has done out there should inspire people to kneel down and genuflect! Again, some wonderfully creative uses of topography and the rock gardens/towers are just incredible. There were a few pachinko holes but the other 15 were so good that it didnt matter."

This may help find the "most", it doesn't help find the "best". Disc Golf Service Levels (http://stevewestdiscgolf.com/citygraphs.aspx)

I have no idea what city is "best" but I do know that Grand Rapids, Michigan would be great during the summer. Some publication ranked it as the 10th best "disc golf city" in the United States.

I lived in GR for a few years and I can't even believe how many (quality) courses are within 45-60 miles, along with how many people disc golf there. Where I live now, I might see another disc golfer on a course 1 out of 100 rounds. In GR, if you don't make it to a course before 5pm, you're going to wait for every tee shot 90% of the time.

If you stay on the south side of the city, you're within a 45 minute drive of both courses played in the 2008 worlds. Not to mention, you're just over an hour away from Flip City, which if you're familiar with dgcoursereview.com, is the highest rated course on their entire site.

Follow this link (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=628) and then click the links to the near by courses and you'll find there's more courses in that area then they can fit on the lists.

I would guess that there are 30+ courses to play in a 60 mile radius. And some of those courses are superb ;)

Portland, Oregon. McIver, Timber, Trojan Lake and several other courses are well worth your time. July and August are also prime for spectacular weather.
