Didn't want to put the type of place in the title header.

In the Dallas, TX, area, there are several head shops that sell golf discs. With the exception of darts, there is no other merchandise for sale there, other than golf discs, that could come even close to the description of "sporting goods".

Is this a local phenomenon, or is this particular channel for golf disc sales occur regionally or nationwide?

ps If you don't know what a head shop is, God bless you, and stay ignorant!

Pretty common I think....even on a trip to Tahoe, Cali they had them in there headshop.

My Granddad's store(Cortese Flag= the place I work now) use to be a headshop back in the late 70s early 80s, but it's been long gone since. My mom took it over in the late 80s,(adding screen printing) and I am slowly working on doing the same...I brought disc sales into the store about 5 years ago. So I sell discs out of a "use to be" head shop.

People who frequent head shops also frequent disc golf courses, seems smart to me that they sell them. Of course you can always also get your discs at a sporting goods store (play it again, discks, academy, etc.) if you don't frequent the head shop.

hey Bill,

you seem confused at times for a guy that's been around since the begiining or is this just your way of saying you don't approve of head shops selling discs??

There's about 4000 retail locations that sell golf discs, 500 clubs and another 1000 or so guys who pop the trunk!

There are 6 main types of stores.

convenient stores ( usually right by a course and do REALLY well if they keep up on whats hot and restock when low,, usually the best value outside of a club or trunk)

big box sporting goods ( usually lacking in selection and higher in price and seldom have any9one with any knowledge of the discs or sport)

mom and pop sporting goods stores ( they often have better selection and some stay up on new releases, prices vary big time with these)

specialty shops ( include glass shops, head shops, craft shops, toy and gift stores etc.)

hardware stores ( coming on strong in certain areas and will continue to grow in numbers)

park departments ( some are great others are clueless, could help in generating revenue for maintenance on the courses if they have guidance).

Dave,

It was great seeing you in KC. I hope are still getting to play.

In response to your post, I am not confused, I just asked a simple question. I have lived in Dallas about 20 years, and I found out when I moved here that discs were available at a head shop not too far from the course. I went with some friends to check it out, and my most recent foray was this year, when it was posted on the McKinney course board that such a shop had used and new discs.

I have never gone to a head shop in a different metropolitan area to see if golf discs were sold there (or for any other reason), and I was just curious if having these items for sales in these type of stores was a local phenomenon or a regional or national one.

It appears that it is a national one. Of course, there is nothing wrong with having discs for sale there, and it probably does not shed too much bad light on the sport, because I assume that for most individuals, their first trip to this type of establishment was not to buy golf discs, but to buy paraphanalia (sp?). Now, if Play It Again Sports started selling hookahs, one hitters and rolling papers next to their rack of golf discs, because they wanted to take advantage of the link between the two, just as the head shops are doing, THEN I would start to experience some discomfort, and that discomfort would be my problem and not that of the disc manufacturer or the retailer. I would say something to the retailer, though.

None of the local head shops in TN that I have every accidentally wandered into have carried discs. its usually been Wal-Marts, Sporting Goods Stores, gas stations located near a course, and people out of the trunks of cars.

Atleast now there is a disc golf store located in the Nashville area after almost 20 years.

Believe me, the store stays busy. We have move people wander in wondering what disc golf is who end up buying discs. but then again we are in the backwaters of the disc golf phenomenon. I think TN was ranked around 20th or 25th for disc golf exposure nationally.

we even occasionally get people trying to use the basket as a grill. oh the stupidity.

If anyone is interested in tye dye shirts or towels for their shop or tournament contact Bobby Brodie at Cloud 9 Disc Golf - 615-824-4384

He custom dyes them and can get embroidery done on them as well.

I'm playing in the mixed division, so I'm looking to get whooped by Alan and Francis. Especially since I've got a torn Labrum in my right arm, that I have to have surgery on next month...I'm throwing lefty for the next 6 months.

Only major tourney I am going to try to attend is Texas Teams between now and then. I did want to go to Lewisville....I think Nick is the only one going from here.
