Hey, I'd like some opinions.

We have a new course with gold (long) and blue (short) tees and I was wondering what everyone thought about signage. Should we go with one sign and if so, which tee should it be on, blue or gold? Should we go with signs on both tees, since they're fairly far apart? I'd guess the latter, but that could be expensive because I'd like some nice signs. The only other option would be one sign with both tees market, but I'm at a loss as to which tee they should be on. Perhaps 18 now and 18 later. What say you guys/gals?

Best compromise is one sign, with both tees shown, consistently on whichever color teepad is likely to be used by the most players.

Which depends greatly on the course layout and location. I've seen some gold tees that were truly gold---relatively few players could or would play them. Signs on the blue tees were appropriate there.

I've also seen courses with longer and shorter tees where almost everyone plays the longs. The shorts are available if anyone needs them. There, the long tees should have the sign.

A competing argument might be that the signs should show both tees, but be put on whichever tee a person walking from the previous basket is most likely to encounter. Usually, but not always, that's the longest tee. This is most helpful to visitors and first-time players.

Thanks Dave. Some of the Tees are close together, but in some cases, the gold tees are 100 feet from the blue. If it were a case where the blues were in front of the golds, I'd go with signs on gold, but on some holes, the tees are off to the side, placing a pond in play that is not in play from a blue tee. Now we could go with one sign from the gold where you can see the blue tee ahead of you and maybe two signs on others or directions to the blue tee. The course is brand new so it's difficult to saw what tees will be played the most. I'm hoping more people will play the gold course since our old course is pretty short! ;)

All input is appreciated!

Russ,

Hopefully, you will have, at the basket, some kind of indication as to which direction lies the next tee. If you have that, you will know where to place the tee signs.

If you only have one pin placement per hole, I have seen, and liked, the method of painting the radial spoke of the basket that best approximates the direction to the next tee (or the direction of the path that will lead to the next tee). Most of these spokes have the standard finish of gray, so you could go with a matte black or red, or, get this, a gold spoke indicating the direction to the gold tee and a blue spoke indication the direction to the blue tee.

If you have multiple pin placements, I suggest mounting an arrow on a sleeve that can be loosened and tightened to adjust the direction that the arrow points, and again, you could have a gold arrow and a blue arrow.

My main hesitancy in playing a new course is that I usually don't have much advance notice, so I end up playing alone, which usually gives me heartburn when I try to navigate the course. No matter how detailed your tee signs are, and how exact they are at indicating the direction to the next tee, nothing, IMO, beats having a "next tee this way" indicator ON the basket, or at least very near to it.

Hope this helps.

I should be clear that signs on both tees is preferable. Of course, I'm not paying for them.

I'm not too fond of playing one tee, where the map and distance on the hole is on the sign on the other tee, 100' away. If these are truly gold tees, a map on the sign is probably pretty valuable.

But of course, we do what we can, and if it's one sign per hole for now, my "compromise" answer is my two cents.

I have noticed that if you put the tee signs on the tees that the stoners don't play, they don't vandalize the tees while waiting to throw. If you put the tee signs in visible places but well away from the tees, they also suffer less vandalism. FWIW

Well, there's a shocker - if the tee signs are not near the tee boxes, that is, in a less visible location than right next to the tee, then the signs suffer less vandalism! Whoda thunkit?

Thanks guys. We've talked about the colored spokes to point to the next tee, but eventually, we want to have additional pin placements.

Right now the tees are marked with two orange stakes that are very visible. They have the hole number and will have distances soon. You can see them well, IF you know where to look. Some of the gold tees are directly behind the blue tees, but like I said, some are to the left or right.

The best idea is to have signs at each tee. It might be confusing to have signs on gold tees in some cases and blues in the other, so we'd have to pick one or the other. Next tee signs will definitely be helpful on this course.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys.

How about cementing a distance tile into the end of each tee box...no sign to vandalize.
