I've spoken with Jay Gobrecht over this past week and he informed me of when and where PA States will take place this year. The two day B-tier event will be June 5th and 6th. Something different this year is the use of three different courses. The first day will be held at Boulder Woods and Quakers Challenge both at Pinchot State Park. Then Sunday the event will move down to Codorus State Park. It's about a 30-45 minute drive between the two.
Granted this is the same weekend as "Shoot the Breeze" in Ashtabula, OH. I must say, Jay Gobrecht is the man and I'm assuming will be more than willing to let ALL PFDS's camp out at his place which is 10 minutes from Codorus.
Not that I want to miss Shoot the Breeze, The Edge-O-Town, and the Volcano, I would rather play Codorus's unbelievable 54 hole disc golf mecca. And, I've heard nothing but great things about Pinchot. I know this will be hard to convince some of you to make the trip out east instead of north-west but, I'm telling you...It might be something to STRONGLY consider!!!

Hey Pittsburghers / IUP'ers and surrounding area disc golfers...
YES - the PA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS will be held June 5 - 6.. at Pinchot State Park and Codorus State Park !!
We got bumped from our regular date in May that we had continued since IUP held the event... Seneca was put in that date slot by the pdga as they are hosting an "A"Tier with multiple USDGC & Vibram spots.... soooo, we jumped into their date opening.
We all know its tough to find openings in the schedule with so many courses... and that's a great thing. Choose the preference of your event, and enjoy.
Tentatively, Pinchot will host saturday w/ 3 staggered starting times
...all PRO's playing 2 rounds on the "Quakers Challenge" course
...MA 1 playing 1 round on Boulder and 1 round on Quaker
...ALL other AMS will play both rounds on Boulder
Tentatively, Codorus will host the sunday rounds
....EVERYONE will play 1 round of 20 holes ...( Pros and AMs on separate courses simultaneously.
....Top PRO's and Top MA 1 will then play a FINAL 9 hole round after a short lunch break.
ALL other Amateurs will do payouts and prizes after the short lunch break, and then be able to depart or stick around and watch the Final 9.
Breaking up the finishing times will allow us to be more time efficient for those traveling long distances.
We want to give you as much challenging disc golf as we can, and still be aware of long travel time for those of you who are driving across state or from far out of town.
YES... my humble abode and property is available for those who are comfy with tenting / floor space / loft mat space... etc. The "POOLE SUITE" has already been booked : ).
Please remember... all this info is somewhat tentative -- and changes may be made, but its a good ground work for us to work from.
thanks..... more finalized info will be coming soon.
Jay.

Bummer, same weekend as Ashtabula and the Kentucky Blue Grass open.
These 2 events usually grab about 10+ of us Pittsburghers. Might be tough getting us to switch our normal routine.

True.
I loved playing Codorus last year and have been looking forward to playing Pinchot. With Shoot the Breeze being much closer to home and it being part of the CanAm Series, this is definately going to be a very hard choice.

I like to make a trip sometime in the near future to Pinchot State Park. Maybe in March once the weather finally breaks. Maybe doing that will help in the decision making process.

My apologies for the turmoil of choices to be made. I looked on the PDGA calendar and didn't see anything listed for PA or Ohio... or what i thought was in close proximity for Pitt discers...
just one of those unavoidable conflicts where you can choose a "swimsuit model" "a disc chic like Alanna", or a "playboy bunnie" regarding which event to go to.... and i'm not saying which event is which... just that any choice is bound to be a good time, and you can all swap stories when you return home.
Let me know if the "Poole Suite" is not going to be occupied - Its good for a lifetime, so don't worry about losing your suite if you miss a year.
be warm, safe and dry.

I agree it is a very good conflict to have. Please unveil the mystery of that code, so I know where I am going! I already figured the first part out.

Not sure if i understand...
but if it is regardig the "Poole Suite".... that simply meant that Kurt and Alanna have a bedroom at my place that they've occupied for a few years and its theirs for the using anytime they come to Codorus way..... : )
I wish i was more intelligent for a more mysterious code, but that's all i got : )

I'm pretty sure he's asking for a decoder on your post above, Jay. :D
I have to admit....I'm kinda curious, too!

It's a comparison! There's three great tournaments on the same weekend so it's like choosing between three hot chicks. You're bound to have a good time regardless what tournament / hot chick you choose.
Let the sarcastic remarks about my wife begin.

Kurt.....I would find it quite difficult to make sarcastic comments about your wife.
Now, if you were talking about yourself, that's a different matter altogether! ;):p:)

maybe duriing the next tectonic plate shifting..... Codorus will end up closer to all the great Pittsburgh courses : ) then i can see all you guys more and play your awesome courses a bit more.

That would be a great shifting of plates. I'm sure most of us; if not all of us would love to play Codorus more often. Codorus was the best disc golf set up that I traveled to last year and it was definitely worth the trip. It’s hard to compare any other Park to one that has 54 holes of disc golf and a mini course to boot. Even though the layout I played at states last year was less than 54 holes, it was nothing shy of awesome. The whole tournament was great. Even the lady that was slightly irate about I don’t know what (everything?) was handled nicely by Jay. I just remember some shouting and Jay having that deer in the headlights look on his face.
Just to clarify: Jerry is right. I was speaking of the code for the female to course comparison. I know which one of the 3 (female) scenarios I would choose, but have no idea which course I will end up at that weekend! Jerry was also right about not making sarcastic comments about Alanna. Why would we pick on her, when Kurt makes a much better target? Like if Kurt Poole was a Disc golf Course which one would it be and why?
Anyone care to take a stab at that one?

The Fighting Llamas of The Boulder Woods Country Club look forward to co-hosting this year's PA State Championships alongside the Codorus crew.
If you'd like a preview of the Quaker's Challenge course, we are anticipating approval for Boulder Bash VII on Sunday March 28th (C-tier). This will be four weeks prior to States, the Spring weather should be in just a couple weeks ahead of all the foliage and the course will still have a very open feel. Boulder Woods (for the Ams) is virtually a pitch-and-putt with 14/18 holes reachable from the tee for most players.
The concrete teepads and Ace runs galore offered at Boulder Woods contrast greatly with the gravel tees and 'two shots till you can see the basket' on some holes at Quaker's Challenge.

Hey, Paul...
Can you elaborate on which divisions will play which course in the Boulder Bash VII?
Hope this post is not interupting one of your naps. ;)

Actually, I already erred as I hadn't had my coffee yet. ; )
Boulder Bash VII, being on Sunday 3/28 is obviously not four weeks prior to PA States. However, our club's Co-TD for States, Chas Ford, will be TDing The 2nd Annual Gifford Pinchot Classic on Saturday May 8th (pending approval). That is the tournament I was blearily forgetting and mistaking with The Bash. Both tournaments provide you with opportunity to get some practice for States as I believe all divisions in both events will be playing both courses (while at States, for pros will be 2 rounds at QC).

Will there be a USDGC spot up for grabs?

May 12 2010, 07:44 AM
But of course! And for any of you out-of-towners looking for a little practice on Friday, the club is planning a little $5 Doubles action on QC Friday evening at 5pm.

will it be a paid USDGC entry spot like we did when the states was at Indiana, PA? And is it only available to PA residents? And if someone has already qualified, are they eligible for the spot?

May 21 2010, 12:49 PM
I am talking with the TD. We had planned on paying all the entries for the respective Championships as long as certain sponsorship goals were met. We certainly want to provide a fun and worthwhile event that meets the expectations the players have from PA State Championships from the recent past. The bar was set high by the folks at IUP and from the PFDS and we are looking to match their efforts.
Of course, anyone from out of state will not be eligible for the championship invites as well as anyone who has already qualified by whatever means. So, as of right now, we are paying the entry fees for the Top Pro Woman and the Top Amateur Woman to the USWDGC, the Top Amateur player to the USADGC, and hopefully (stay tuned), the Top Open player to the USDGC.

It shall be done. Even if the top player from PA were to place out of the cash, they will still receive a paid berth in the USDGC.

I wish Codorus and Gifford Pinchot where about 3 hours closer to the 'burgh. :)
Congrats to the divisional winners. Aside from myself and the Brothers Olcott, the PFDS was represented quite well! :p

Jay you are the best host ever. Thanks so much for everything. After playing the Boulder Bash I knew I wanted to be here for PA STATES. I will be back soon for sure. Lori and I really appreciate the hospitality.
...................oh yeah, NICE SHOOTING!!!!!! Might have caught you with 1 more round at Quakers Challenge, but I knew it was gonna be hard at your home course.
