If a 967 player is shooting 990 and above rounds, does he have to wait until next pdga player rating update, to be considered, or forced to play pro div.

No one is forced to play in a pro division until they take cash in a PDGA tournament. There could be 1030 rated Ams. The top Ams are currently rated over 990.

i thought that once a player is rated (not shooting rated rounds) 970 and higher, they are forced to play in the open division. or whatever age protected division they qualify for based on their rating.

that isn't the same thing as renewing with the pdga as a pro.

Nope. The only thing related to 970 is that a pro cannot play in Advanced if his rating is over 969. There has never been a cap on amateur ratings with the exception of events that are sanctioned as strictly ratings based.

wow, so we COULD have a 1030 rated player playing MA1 (advanced am)? providing that he has never accepted cash and is still registered as an amateur?

Absolutely. I think some years we've seen Ams as high as 1004. Of course, Tiger and many other ams have had a golf handicap better (lower) than many pros when they were still amateurs also.

There's a 914 or something rated amateur woman still playing amateur after winning Am Worlds in 2008.

If that was that kid from Sweden, I saw him practicing some at Rosedale - he could crush it.

Yup! That's the one. Made everyone else look very junior-ish. (is that a word) He could've done real well at the Advanced level. Maybe he will this year. He's rated like 1001 now a days!

The Swedes don't really support amateur competition the way we do in the U.S. other than with Junior divisions. Their top Juniors come to Am Worlds, do well and then go pro.

Sounds Like Nate Doss. He killed me at AM(juniors) worlds In 1999 and then I beleive he went pro.

Chuck, I almost disagree with you on this one. Team Sweden (the pro's) where following the 19 and under Doubles final round in KS 09. Oscar Stenfelt (http://www.pdga.com/player-stats?PDGANum=8658&year=2010) and partner Victor Grundstrm (http://www.pdga.com/player-stats?PDGANum=8937&year=2010) really Gave Andrew and David Jr a great match. It was by far the Andrew and David hardest doubles Win

I came away with a bit envious of the team spirit and support of Swedes.

Those are Junior players which they support very well. I'm saying they haven't yet developed a tradition of big amateur division events like the U.S. with Novice, Rec, Intermediate and Advanced adult divisions. Once a junior gets to age 20, and even earlier with their stars, they go pro. Here's an example of an event from 2009:

So, if a player accepts cash in a pro event, but is rated below 970 they can play as an advanced amateur?

The reason I ask is because I noticed a player in a rather large amateur tournament this weekend is listed as having accepted cash in 2009, but his rating does currently sit below 970. Not trying to tattle on anyone, but this thread made me wonder exactly what the rules are, since I have been away from sanctioned golf for awhile.

Yes, any player, pro or am, can enter the appropriate Am division if their rating is below the posted threshold which is 970 for a pro playing Advanced. The "pros playing am" rating break grid is at the bottom of this page:

I'm sure Chuck meant to say EXCEPT in Majors, Worlds, and USADGC - but he is too busy trying to keep up with the Certified Officials thread. :)

The linked Table indirectly excludes those Am majors by saying pros can play in am events for which they qualify but Thanks Keith for saying it directly.

That is correct, not just in disc golf but every other sport we could find.
