What type of disc would you use to throw a shot that would stay upside down for the entire flight
Karl
Apr 28 2010, 02:30 PM
Mitch,
I'm guessing that NO disc will stay "up-side-down" for its entire flight (unless you throw a very 'soft' / 'short' shot) as discs DO eventually turn.
If I had to choose 1 that would "stay up-side-down" for the longest period of time, I'd choose the most overstable possible - as it would "delay" the inevitable turn the longest.

I'd pick one with the flattest top, like a heavy Wham-O 70 Mold or a Super Puppy, then slide it upside down on the ground, throwing it so it would not flip over.

if youre looking for distance upside down it needs to be an understable disc thrown like an anhyzer so it doesnt flip over right away

I throw an upside down flick shot 100 meters all the time ... Its my own hybrid scooby flick shot I use at Live Oak quite often.

32. All that is is a side arm thumber. I'm sure given the right wind conidtions I know quite a few players that could throw it 130 meters.

I've found that throwing upside down is the most effective way to play the course backwards.
I am gong to practice this chesterson special. What is it good for again?

Viper. Mr Wilson was for real. It started vertical and landed vertical; never flying with the top facing up.

Throwing accurately with distance control over trees. Its called a thumber or a tomahawk.
These are 2 of my five most prominent driving styles.

Oh, I thought this was something new, not just overhead shots. Are y'all talking about Jaime Wilson?

Those shots were amazing to see. For grins or just for the challenge, he used to throw those over a water tower. If there could be record for height of an overhead shot, he could have held that also.
If there was a height competition, I wonder whether an overhead or backhand would win.
For these types of throws, would the new faster discs go farther than a Viper?

No Way...I have trouble throwing that far right side up....but the over 40 record is quiet a bit shorter

I got to see Jamie do some crazy high shots that did produce giggles for me. I saw him throw over the bridge from Port Arthur to the disc golf courses used for the two Worlds. That was nuts.
I am not sure if the newer discs would go farther, but they would go faster. Distance has to do with the rate of turn too.

I remember that bridge. All I have to say is, WOW

i watched alexi bubis throw an epic, that throw was the farthest over hand throw ive ever witnessed.
I,m betting in all divisions the epic has the capacity to break all records for the over hand throw.
it used to be called brads cheater disc when i was playing in intermediate.

The problem with that is the epic doesn't stay upside down, it flips over and flies like a regular disc so I don't think it qualifies for the upside down record.

For my moeny the slower discs go farther upside down. I can throw an Xtreme farther than any other disc overhand and it is as slow as slow gets.

Jerry,
You said:

I'm going to say the "far-ness" you get out of your Xtreme is NOT due to its "slow-ness" but rather from its VERY over stable-ness.
If you were to throw a really slow disc - say, a putter - I bet you won't see the same distance.
When dealing with conventional (non-Epic) overhands, the more over stable the disc (speed being about equal) the more distance.
And over stable-ness "wins out" over speed.
Example: Most people will throw a Flick overhand further than a Wraith overhand, yet the Wraith is a 'faster' disc.

I agree slightly with what you are saying but I can throw an Xtreme a lot farther overhand than say a force and they are roughly the same stability. That said, the more over stable the farther the disc will go.
Karl

Jerry,
Wow! I'd LOVE to have a Force that was as over stable as an Xtreme. Or an Xtreme that was as fast / far as a Force.
Maybe you have a really beat Xtreme - as normally an Xtreme is at least a couple of pips more o-s than a Force and a couple of pips slower.
But again, the o-s 'ness of a disc equates to distance (in the oh throw) to a slightly greater extent than does a disc's speed...therefore most people will throw their furthest oh throws with a VERY o-s, fast disc...in that order.

The longest overhand I have ever seen in person was with a whippet-x. The guy is a rec player, but was a pitcher in collage. I have found for me Whippet's and Firebird's are best for distance.
