PDGA Club Chronicles: Boulder Ladies Disc Golf Club

Alessandra (Ali) Lance started the Boulder Ladies Disc Golf Club (BLDGC) in 2017, to provide a space for women to play together and create a community in what has historically been a very male-dominated sport.
BLDGC's 2024 WGE participants
Since the inception of the Club back in 2017, she has worked hard to increase Club membership by hosting consistently scheduled ladies events and through word of mouth, inviting any female disc golfer she sees to join the Club. During the 2024 season, Ali hosted weekly ladies tag matches and monthly ladies doubles events. These BLDGC events featured over 60 different female participants from across the state of Colorado, with the largest tag/league turnout coming in May of 2024, featuring 25 women. According to Ali, one of the most significant accomplishments for her and the Club was running a PDGA Women's Global Event in 2024 that featured 72 women, making the BLDGC WGE the 5th largest WGE in the world!
“I could not be prouder of this group of women; watching them grow and excel on their own disc golf journeys has truly been incredible,” says Ali. “I wholeheartedly believe that my calling with disc golf was and is to establish and grow this group, and to encourage female participation in this sport that I love! Whether you've never played disc golf, have played casually, or compete in tournaments on a regular basis, I welcome all women of all ages and from any walks of life to come join us!!! I look forward to the future with this group and expect nothing but amazing things to come.”
Continuing that momentum in 2025, Ali and the BLDGC ran an event during Women’s Disc Golf Week, and are now preparing to host the 2025 The Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf Championships presented by Discmania. This prestigious event will make a triumphant return to Purple Park in Superior (Colorado) and will run from August 22nd through August 24th.
The Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf Championships (RMWDGC) has a rich history in the state of Colorado, dating back to its inception in 2011. Doug Bjerkass (the current PDGA Executive Director) started the event and during the first 3 years (2011, 2012, & 2013) the RMWDGC was held at a variety of courses in Lakewood and Denver.
“The Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf Championship was the first sanctioned event that I TD’d,” says Bjerkaas. “It started as a dream, became a few ideas, and eventually became a reality and an event that became nationally known for delivering a great experience to female disc golfers of all ages and skill levels. Former champions in the FPO division at the event include Paige Bjerkaas (and a second time as Paige Shue), Catrina Allen, Valarie Jenkins, Sarah Hokom, and Paige Pierce. In fact, the first 6 RMWDGC champions are also former World Champs! The event is in great hands with Ali Lance leading the charge. I have been so impressed with her professionalism and passion for both the event, and disc golf in general.”
Under the new direction of Ray Woodruff (the Colorado PDGA Coordinator at the time), the event moved to Purple Park in 2015. The RMWDGC continued on a biennial cadence in 2017, 2019 and 2021. In 2023 the event was temporarily moved to Woodland Park, under the direction of Kim Wooters. In August of 2025 the RMWDGC will be returning to the beautiful Purple Park and will be TD’d by Ali herself.
The Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf Championships have been a very special event for the disc golf community for years. RMWDGC is open to a wide range of ages and skill levels; female participation spans from junior divisions all the way through professional-level divisions. Participation numbers have consistently been groundbreaking as the event continues to gain a national reputation for being one of the largest ladies-only disc golf tournaments in the USA. Between 2015 and 2023 the RMWDGC averaged 109 female competitors each year, drawing women from across the state of Colorado as well as from all over the US. Not only have the participation numbers been impressive but the event has featured some of the top female professional disc golfers over the years.
The Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf Championships is truly an exceptional and special event, not only for the female participants but the disc golf community as a whole. Local disc golfers can show their support for this event in multiple ways – people can sign up to be a caddie for a player, volunteer their time in other ways, and of course, by showing up to spectate and cheer on the women as they compete throughout the weekend.
Player registration officially opened up on May 1st and within the first 24 hours, 38 ladies had signed up to play! These ladies represent 26 different cities, in 5 different states!
We want to celebrate Ali and the BLDGC for all their successes and contributions to the sport, and encourage you to come to Superior, Colorado in August to take part in this prestigious event!
