Remember Fayetteville's 1st ever official PDGA sanctioned tourney on April 1? Does anyone want to go play in one of their mini-tourns this week-end? Sat. singles (expected large turn-out, so divisions) Sun. flip doubles - $5 per head per event, ace pot is up to $250! Tee-offs 1 p.m. both days.
We can re-familiarize ourselves with their course and check out the competition
so we can be better prepared to kick their tree huggin hippie azzes :)
Whatever you do don't hang no flyers at their park or let anyone from TDSA know that we're going :o
Seriously, we ought to get a group together to go help on some of Tulsa's work days also. What do ya'll think? Talk to me....

If you send your people over here to help with worlds this weekend, we can send them back with some support for your tournamnet and those volunteers will be honored and given thanks after worlds is over. We are planning something special for all of the volunteers after the event.

We will be working on the new Mohawk Red and Mohawk Black courses. New baskets are going in this weekend.
We NEED help, as the PDGA is coming to town for course reviews next week.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Ganzel. :D

The Fayetteville Police Department will be stationed at the entrance to Northshore Park this weekend and will be searching all vehicles for flyers.
They WILL NOT be arresting flyer offenders, but they will ask you to leave all of you flyers in a flyer depository located outside of the park. You will be allowed to re-claim your confiscated flyers when you leave the park.
I'm sorry it has come to this, but it seems like a fair compromise- considering the repeated threats of upcoming flyer violations. If any of you folks coming to town with flyers want to drop them off at my house and then pick them up after the round- you may be able to save yourself some trouble at the park.
Just wanted to give y'all a heads up. :D

I played Tilles Park today on my lunch break and was pleasantly surprised to find new tee-signs. A boy scout did them for a scout project (Not Andy). I am ashamed to say that I can't remember his name but I will post it when I find out. The signs are rather nice and have distances also the distances are:
Hole 1 - 256 ft.
Hole 2 - 335 ft.
Hole 3 - 244 ft.
Hole 4 - 220 ft.
Hole 5 - 250 ft.
Hole 6 - 317 ft.
Hole 7 - 309 ft.
Hole 8 - 236 ft.
Hole 9 - 375 ft.

Grand Total - 2,452 ft.

Not bad, I've played that course for 6 years and never really knew the distances. If you can play it early in the morning or while the kids are at school it doesn't seem to have the "crowded" issues everyone complains about, and don't forget about after dark, lots of lights make it rather easy for a night game (glow still recomended):cool:

It is a sad day. We were just informed that one of our Akansas disc golfers was lost yesterday. Denny Reeves. Denny was a great guy, golfer and volunteer for the sport. We will miss him very much.

The below post is from the Darrell Baily in Arkansas.

For those that have not heard. I got a call last night from Ganzel and was shocked, upset and saddened to hear that our own Denny Reaves was killed in a fire at his apartment early wed. morning. I don't know all the details, all I know is he is gone and disc golf will never be the same for me. I still can't believe this has happened and he won't be at the park this Sat. or taking a road trip to Tulsa to help clean up. I have lost a very good friend as I know others will be just as upset when they hear the news. I ask all who read this to keep his family, especialy his two young daughters,in your prayers and give them the strength to get through this difficult time.

GOD SPEED Dennis Reaves(#28415)

It was a pleasure to be your friend.

I'm trying to get a crew together to go play at Sapulpa's "World's Biggest" event this Sat. May 6, for those that don't know (I just found this out) the "World's Biggest" is a national promotional event put out by John Houk of Millenium Disc - the idea is to get as many people to play disc golf as you can, new players and veterans - It cost nothing to go out and play at this event however there is 2 "mini tournaments" that day and a disc/t-shirt set that can be purchased ($12) the mini's are singles $7 per round, tee-off at 10 am, Flip Dubs same price 2:30 p.m tee-off.

The main reason I really want to get as many from our area as possible to go is that a portion of the proceeds from the mini's ($2 per entry) will go to Denny Reaves family, for those that might not know Denny passed away last week, he was a great guy and avid disc golf enthusiast from the Fayetteville area. Fayetteville's club is also putting up a basket that can be won at this event (not sure of the format).

I might have some trouble going to this alone (financially) and am looking for anyone that wants to ride with me and share gas cost, its about a 2 hour drive. More info can be found on Tulsa's or Fayettville's discussion thread.

Anyone interested call me at 522-9036 or Post/PM me

Wow it sounds like a lot of short lefty hyzers. Well since tom has to use his 360 for distance he probably isn't very consistant. it is a hard shot for rightys and an easy for leftys. I will still probably play there. I don't really want to start anything so i am going to answer the questions now
What are you talking about?

All I can say is Count the lefty hyzers then the rightie.15 thru 18 is DEFINATELY rightie favored. Then there's the rightie hyzers in the woods.PLUS! The alternates will be just as equal. You guys just need to realize there IS an Anhyzer some where in that bag.As for the 360.Only two holes that can be used on.And I nearly pinned #3 without it.That shot was low,Had it been up it would have blown passed it.Hey BTW,If nobodies teamed up with that Jason kid.Better get him now.Pretty good for one year of playin.Yup he carried me all the way /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Willie and I might try to show up, but no promises. We went out and played clarksville today. The course layout is awesome!! The only complaints for both me and willie have to be the 2 really long wooded holes and the fact that the barrels were too close to the teepads. I birdied three of the first four holes, and my game was on until the last few. I ended up beating willie by two strokes. Of course, I was afraid to play skins, since I got my hindquarters handed to me yesterday. Go figure.

AlmaWillie
Jul 09 2006, 12:10 AM
Just an added note for Clarksville........
We twrote down and tallied up distance on the course and it plays 5511 feet. MUCH longer than I originally thought.
I still really liked the course. Has a really nice layout for no more room than there is in the park. The two holes (13 and 14) at 458 and 345 respectively, through the forest of trees still were really rough. I still want to play with the designer so he can show me the route.

OK guys,

I hate to admit it but Pitch is right about something. #10 at Alma (hard dogleg left) is an aceable hole! We really debated on this when we were cleaning out the fairways, but after today I know it is true.

NOOOOOO!! I didn't hit it!!!
BUT..... I did throw a thumber up and over the trees that landed dead even with the hole and not over 10 feet left!!! It was an easy deuce (on a hole by the way that I had never done better than a four on).
So I can see the possibilty now!! Someday it will be done.

How was the round? Horrible! 8 over with 4 OB's ( I hit every OB on the course at least once :( ) The wind was so bad up top, my first throw (T-Rex) on 17 went way up in the trees (left) and my follow up (in case of a lost disc) with my SB Orc went all the way to the bottom parking lot even with the playground swings (one EXTREME to the other)!!
Oh well, I was playing at least!

Short story made long..... :D ............. I thought some folks out there might like to mark down the day that AlmaWillie admitted Pitch was right about something!! :o

BEAT you at the mini tomorrow Tom!! I mean see you. :o

I would like to know everyone's complaints about southern national tournaments. Compare pdga tournaments who have the same number of people and you will see that about 95% of the time, so. national tourneys payout way more than pdga tournaments.

3902
Mar 03 2007, 11:40 AM
So National or PDGA
The payout depends on added money AND attendance.
My only complaint is the time thing.I do like the diffrence in the money .Who wouldn't.
Also 300 miles seems a little far to be concerned with conflicting events.(I would only be concerned with that if we were throwing more So National qualifyers)There are so many events now that if we went by the 300 mile idea we'd be having a hard time with the schedule. My main concern is AR.
Yeah I want to see it grow nation wide. But within our state is my priority. My choice would be to play and support AR if there were a tourney say in Tulsa,Missouri, etc. If people aren't given the choice they will have to play elsewhere
It's no secret that the PDGA is getting hard to swallow. They are trying to make it easier by discussing it with the SC's and PC's allowing more input on what we think would be affective for growth.
The bottom line?
Money.
Sending in a couple hundred bucks for a C Tier is kinda hard to swallow.
Spending $75.00 for my membership dues is also a little much.
My suggestion(And they have been many)Is to simply cut EVERYTHING in half.Seriously,Make the membership fees half of what they are and the money for the tourneys as well.
Like it or not the PDGA is the strongest association .I do support them (Obviously)Even So National supports them.
No my only real complaint with So National is the snails pace of doing things.
Otherwise you would have seen many more dual sanctioned events around here. You probably will in the future if they could speed up the communication.I'm not the only one who noticed this.So it's not just me with that opinion.
By the way
I HATE POLITICS.
I just wanna golf now.

lilhobbit489
Mar 05 2007, 12:03 AM
Those are very good points. I think one of the main reasons for southern nationals operating at a much slower pace is the reliance on volunteers for the board of directors. PDGA pays a large amount to the executive officers, but SN must rely on volunteers for everything. I read something a few weeks back that said the fee to become a basic member of the PGA was only 15-25$ with increasing levels of membership becoming more expensive What does that say about our beloved PDGA? Something needs to be done to lower this fee. If we could incorporate the ability of the PDGA to attain sponsors with the approach of the SN to payout and treatment of amateur players, everything would be so much better. Oh yeah PITCH i ordered one of those soft kc pro rocs so we'll see if they're all you say they are.

3902
Mar 05 2007, 01:19 AM
I dig the disc,Love the feel and flight.
Oh BTW,
Many of the PDGA positions are not paying.
Now I know there's a diffrence between them and So National.
I know there's been problems within So National concerning these issues (Lack of communication with TD's,Scheduling events in a timely manner,Being able to get someone to return e mails and phone calls,Having to reschedule events because of a couple of the above points,)
But all in all,So National is a pretty cool idea.
Just needs to work out some of the bugs.
And the PDGA needs to cut back on all those extra goodies so they can jam out more membership and events.
I'm the SC for AR.
If I weren't,
I probably could have found several things to spend $75.00 on.
Really kinda sucks but whatcha gonna do ?
Did I mention I hate politics?

lilhobbit489
Mar 05 2007, 01:26 AM
I know most of the PDGA positions are non-paying, but the 2? i think they do pay are paid very very well. I'm sure we could argue back and forth all day long about this as it is probably done on both forums. I'll let ya know what i think about the roc. Later

3902
Mar 05 2007, 10:16 AM
I'm not arguing.
This type of discussion allows for the growth of the associations and for better all around golf events for all of us.
I like what one of the guys said on the yahoo discussion for the SC's and PC's.
This is simply a form of communication.
I like the PDGA,I like the So Nationals.
I like anything that promotes our sport and allows us to all enjoy the events and the fellowship.
After all,The people who play the sport are just as important to me as the sport.Watching new players on new courses gives me just as much satisfaction now as playing anymore.
My getting fired up over these situations has dwindled down quite a bit.I'll voice my opinion as we all should.
But I won't get so bent that I can't enjoy the round of golf.
It's all good

What are the requirements for setting up a SN tourney? Is there a limit on how many teeth a player is missing before they can enter? ;)

lilhobbit489
Mar 05 2007, 12:39 PM
That all depends on which state you're talking about. I believe mississippi and alabama require the most missing teeth with arkansas and louisiana running a close 3rd and 4th. The main requirement is you must be drunk during your round. Sorry, I'm able to harp on the southern nationals because i love their tourneys so much. You wanna see an awesome southern national tournament. Go to Memphis Dogwood Classic in May at Bud Hill. That tournament smokes any PDGA tournament i've ever been to save worlds.

sschumacher
Mar 05 2007, 12:50 PM
Well I didn't know if you had to live in one of those states to run a SN. So you think if I ran one in OK I wouldn't get a good turnout?....Is beer drinking allowed during the round? /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

evandmckee
Mar 05 2007, 03:37 PM
I would like to know everyone's complaints about southern national tournaments. Compare pdga tournaments who have the same number of people and you will see that about 95% of the time, so. national tourneys payout way more than pdga tournaments.

Just like Pitch said, only problem I've got with SN is communication, we held SN money for months not getting replies as to where to send it, several of us were interested in a Hot Spring tourney last year, it made it to the SN schedule just a couple of weeks before the tourney with heavy discounts for early registration but by the time it was on the schedule the pre-reg deadline was already past, the extra heavy pre-reg discount also concerned me in fairness, not sure if these numbers are totally correct, its been awhile back, pro $30 pre-reg, $50 day of, seemed to steep, like it'd be kinda unfair with payout.

For that matter why sanction anything unless it's attracting players, making the tourney bigger, better, funner...

SN $2 per head? all goes to payout at the SN championships, pretty cool...PDGA anywhere from $2 to $ 5 per head, goes straight to the big fund where lots of different things are funded from including payouts and lots more, I'm personally more concerened with overall publicity and growth of the sport as a whole than payout (probably because I'm a crappy tourney golfer) but the 2 things can help each other out. The PDGA also spends $20 something just to process memberships with an outside source, that sounds like too much and could be handled eternally but I'm not an expert on that subject, there may be good reasons that my feeble mind isn't grasping.

Another issue is Insurance, PDGA $50 per event, some of our courses absolutely require insurance, I researched getting insurance for our Ice Bowl to be at Ben Geren, $300 was the cheapest that I found, that would of robbed half of our charitable proceeds or could have been a total bust, luckily the City let us do it on one of their courses with a waiver, sanctioning our Ice Bowl would of also taken too much money from our charity.

What does SN bring to the table other than an awesome payout tourney at the end of the year which could attract more players? Any other resources, structures or ammenities?

I'll let everyone know that some in WAFDA are talking about considering double sanctioning in the future, especially if it draws more players and the money goes to something good in DG. Being able to drink or not wear a shirt during tourney play wouldn't be the reason, we want to remain in a professionally conducted atmosphere that anyone could attend. Some areas the being able to drink and play tourneys would probably be alright.

I also believe the double sanctioned scenario should be heavily tracked to insure what extra players that it might be drawing is making it better overall for everyone (both associations)

I also hate politics, who would ever of thought that frisbee golf would bring me to make political decisions

.02 cents

lilhobbit489
Mar 06 2007, 02:54 AM
There is no state requirement to hold a southern nationals event. The guys that do the marshall street disc golf championships are putting on a couple of SN tourneys this year. You would probably get a decent turnout. The only stipulation is you have to get it approved by John K or Jim Orum which is not very hard to do.

I agree, we've done it before, lack of communication turned us off but things aren't perfect in disc golf associations, like before, its hard to truly hold volunteers 100% accountable, they/we have lives and careers that interfere with our hobby sometimes. It will be brought in front of our clubs meetings, we've already somewhat considered it, what's $2 more on top of $20 - $50 anyway and it might improve an already good participation number/payout. Really up to the TD's, I would like to see Hell on the Border (http://www.pdga.com/schedule/event.php?TournID=6773) double sanctioned but I'm only assisting on it, up to the club and TD, we'll see

So we should'nt play alma.

You might want to check out some of the new holes, as of now grass is HIGH!! The wooded part is better, just watch your disc in the high grass

here's my copy/paste on it from WAFDA's forum:

Alma has recently went through a bunch of park construction directly in the path of the course causing a redesign and some removal of some tees and putting in new holes.

A few of us were out there this weekend to work on getting the course truly playable again.

New Tee Signs are being done, we just renumbered the existing ones in an effort to make it navigatable and changed the numbers on the baskets that we could.

This course will be fully manicured before the Alma Greens Tournament on June 30th.

The Mayor of Alma is looking to mow it soon, we are also offering to mow it if he will let us. (their priority right now is getting the water park open but it will be done)

As of yesterday Hole 2, 5, 7 and 9 tee sign was not in place as well as the new holes for #13 & 14 (sleeves are in place for baskets, tee's are staked)

Hole 1 - clearly marked - starts at the new parking lot on top of the park by the lake

Hole 2 - sign missing but tee stakes are still there

Hole 3 - clearly defined

Hole 4 - NEW - defined -The new hole 4 is the old #17's tee (old basket 17 is being moved to a new hole in the woods) shooting to the old 18 pin (now hole #4) - downhill 500ish foot hole, cliff on the right, OB very close to back of pin

NEW tee for #5 is shooting off the cliff to the newly moved basket (no sign or defined tee markers yet..but very soon will be)

Hole 6 - clearly marked

Hole 7 - (on top of hill) sign missing, tee stakes and new mat is there

Hole 8 - clearly marked

hole 9 - sign missing, tee markers are there

hole 10 (starts going into woods) - clearly defined

hole 11 - clearly defined

hole 12 (over the water) - clearly defined

hole 13 - NEW (walk forward and lil left of 12's basket) - temporary stakes are marking tee area, sleeve is in the ground, very short tight fairway, will be cleared a lil more - almost a dogleg but you'll be putting where the turn is)

hole 14 - NEW (as you stand at the end of 13's fairway looking at 13's sleeve, temp tee stakes are a lil past and to the left of 13's sleeve) - tightly wooded, leftie and righty route - fairly short hole

hole 15 (devils fork) - clearly defined

hole 16 - crazy dogleg - take your 3 or throw one hell of a thumber and pray - defined

hole 17 - clearly defined

hole 18 - defined, top of basket ruined by vandals, city of Alma is fixing and will be replaced

Rusted chains are also being replaced (bad run from Innova - they sent new ones), a little bit of clearing some of the wooded fairways from new growth, weed killing and raking is also in the works as well as next tee markers

The entire design intention of the wooded holes is crazy tight fairways (but fairly short - demands accuracy)...Open holes - Long

This will be a very unique course and will play entirely different than any other surrounding courses demanding different shots and strategies.

Any manpower help with all of this is greatly appreciated, I plan on spending some time out there again on Memorial Weekend, early June more people's time will be freed up and more work done.

I don't want you to miss a round at Alma due to the fix-up and lack of maintenance by the city. Only 4 of the holes are majorly affected. The dam shot has really tall grass, the shot up to the parking lot on top has some tall weeds to walk through, hole #13 (new) has still not got a basket, and new hole 18 (double mando oaks) the top of the basket is gone.
The grass is still tall on the other holes, but not as bad as the ones I mentioned, and not to the point that it really affects play.
But of course I am a country boy, who throws his discs in the cow pasture!! (that's why I only buy green discs)

Let me know if anyone would like to meet around 4:15 on Friday at Alma.

Willi I'm not exactly sure what the plans are for Friday. I have to get ahold of Darrell and see what his time frame is like. Willie you can give me a call when you get out of school. Hopefully we can meet up with you for a round. 479-283-3978 /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Well, once again I have to follow in Evan's footprints.......
I have had a change of plans. I got an invite to go to a cabin on the King's river for the weekend, and can't refuse. I will not be available for a round on Friday. I am truly sorry, b/c I was looking forward to hooking up with you guys and getting a round in. I hope you do at least stop by Alma and check out the new layout. The wooded holes are all good to play, and the ones on the bluff aren't horrible. The worst grass problem is on the flat above the park and off of the dam, where old holes 1,2 and 3 are. Other than that, it isn't too bad. And anyway, the wooded holes make for a good afternoon round in the shade!!
Hope ya'll have fun, and I'll catch you later.

Andrew and I had a great time at the mini yesterday.

Thanks to all the Arkansas golfers for making us feel welcome.

I love the North Shore course. You have done a great job with the design..

See you in Tulsa or the next time we make it over...

Yeah we went down Friday and played 2 rounds at Ben Geren. Started pouring on us during the 2nd round on hole #14. Made it to #16 and had a little lighting. Ganzel talked us into finishing the next 2 holes. Then had a huge lighting strike about 100 yards away from us :(. At that point it was a unanimous decision to run for the car. Other than the rain and lighting we had a blast! :D

Did anyone play Alma today with Tommy Eddy? I saw him at Hole #1 talking on his cell at around 11:45. I would have stopped but I had a trailer load of Furniture and etc (moving my mother-in-law).
My wife, John and I played Friday afternoon. I came out of it at a +3 and felt OK because I had several bad putts, and one drive that got caught by the tall grass and went just over 30 feet. John threw a T-rex off of the bluff from hole 4 (old 17) that flew somewhere around where old hole #1 was, where the trail comes up from the parking lot at the park. It was quite a bomb, but it was bad b/c we couldn't find the disc!
I saw the mayor out on a Gator looking over the course with someone (Tom???). I hope that that is a good sign for us, and not more bad news. I'm ready to get the
course settled for a while.
Tom let me know if I can spray Round-up out there on all the weeds, bushes, poison ivy, as I would like to kill it out before removing it. I'll probably be able to do that Tuesday or Wednesday.
Everyone keep an eye out, Alma is coming around!!!

Alma mini? I was wanting to get some people togather for a small mini, down in Alma in the next week or so. I thought it would be a great chance to get a feel for the new layout before Alma Greens. Just wanted to see what everyone's schedules are like and when might be a good day to do this. I'm thinking sometime during the week would be the best bet. Chris Pleis and a couple of Little Rock guys are already planning on coming down. During the week seems to work best for them. Anyways let me know if you might be interested in joining us. Should be lots of fun. :D

I am actually going to be at Devil's Den through Thursday, b/c my wife has workshops in Lincoln all week. If ya'll happen to come Friday or want to come down for the weekend I would try and get with you. I am sure TreeShark would be willing to step in too. Let me know when you will be around.
If anyone is out towards Devil's Den I'll have some baskets set-up and would be glad for the help watching the kids........ I mean practicing putting!!! :D

Hey Buck, be patient with Alma, it's not lookin as good as it will by the Greens, some tee signs missing (doing new ones), needs mowing and a lil more clearing on the 2 new holes, it'll be beautiful by the 30th though

I'm stuck at work 8-5 but after that I may be able to play, let me know when

We are all looking at going on 19th. That is a Tuesday. Will probably be up there around 11 or so. Let me know of anything we need to be aware of to play the course. Thanks

By the end of this coming weekend the new tee signs and "next tee" markers will be hopefully be up so it should be easier to navigate (especially for the new holes), hopefully the City will be mowing it or we'll get to do that also, the 2 new wooded holes (13 and 14) will get a lil more clearing before the Greens, other than that its basically good to go!!

I was thinking of making a trip down to Ben Geren today to check out the course before HotB. If any locals are gonna be around let me know. I always enjoy golfing with other people more than going solo, especially on a course i've never played.

You can call me at 479-283-3811. I might answer to firechicken_magician or you can just ask for Zach.

I'm getting on the road right now, so if anyone wants to meet us just give me a call on my cell, we'll probably be in the fort by 1 or 1:30.

Hey Colin, by the time your yeast infection clears up, or whatever it is you whine about, my rating is gonna be higher than yours, and you'll still owe me 17 skins.

Yeast infection, nice.
Don't worry Zach. I'll be out there soon enough. I finish my Master's Degree requirements monday and have knee surgery the 14th of August. So I will be cleared play 6 months from that date. So get to practicing!
Oh by the way Zach, if you need me to explain what a Master's Degree is, let me know.

I understand that Colin but it seems like you've been in college for over 10 years now....Does it really take that much education to be a manager at McDonalds or a chicken cage cleaner at Tyson's? When are you going to get out and get a real job? :D

Zing! Man I like these Oklahoma guys.

We had a blast, I brought my buddy Clint who will be playing novice at HotB.

I shot even at Ben Geren, -1 at Tilles, +1 at Alma, and +6 at Northshore night golfing. I'm gonna be golfed out for a while, I am hurtin.

Clint shot +15 at Ben Geren, +1 at Tilles, and +12 or so at Alma. Watch out Rec division.

I really enjoyed Ben Geren, a few guys made it sound like it would be more wide open and alot easier, but it's got alot more trees than i thought and some cool shots. It's so much hotter in fort smith and alma though, you poor bastards. 98% in the fort all day, and around 80% with cool winds in NWA. Needless to say I've got a nice sun burn to show for today.
