Hey guys, sorry this has taken so long to get back on here, but I have been locked out of the discussion board for the last 2 months! :(
I have got involved with Lake Fort Smith Recreation department for this summer, and they are planning a day of activities at the park.It is going to be June 18th. I will be setting up, at least, a 5 hole course to take families on to introduce them to the sport. I would LOVE to have some folks there with me to help take people around and teach them about the sport. If we get enough interest in disc golfers coming out, I have been told we might be able to setup a temporary 18 hole and let folks who know the sport play on it!!
I will also be looking for some light weight drivers, or some mid-ranges and putters to use in my demonstrations.
Right now, the plan is to start at 12:00 and do the activities (they will also have Pickleball and Orienteering set up) until around 5. Then they are going to have free hot dogs and an Ice Cream Social. Then there is going to be a Pool Party from 6-8, with a cost of $18 for a family of four, and $2 for each additional person.
Let me know if you are interested in coming to this event as either a volunteer to help out, or just with your family as a fun thing to do on a Saturday.

Thanks Evan! I don't want to take too much credit, as it was an easy sell for this day they are doing. If I can get them to agree to putting in a FULL course there in the furture, then I'll really be excited. But that is gonna take involvement and interest shown by the disc golf community. That is why I am hoping so many people bring out new players (and old) to play the course, that the park sees what a great addition disc golf could be to their facilities!! They have LOTS of room to work with for sure!

Hey Willie,
What is the status on the June 18th Disc Golf Day @ Lake Fort Smith? Is this still going to happen and do you still need help? If everything is still a go, we need to make this the place to play that day and really jump on this opportunity to promote our sport.
Let me hear from you.

I just tlaked it over with the lady at the park over the weekend, and with the guys at the WAFDA meeting tonight! This is aGO and we want to make it lots of fun!! We will be setting up either 5 or 6 baskets, and will be handing out info on the sport, and taking groups around to show the what it is all about. If we get a good showing and have positive results, we could be looking at a DG course going in at this wonderful park in the future. So please, dad's ask for a trip to Lake Fort Smith for Father's Day.... Mom's bring your kids out to learn disc golf and have a good time... DG'ers COME ON, SHOW YOUR SUPPORT OF THIS SPORT WE LOVE SO MUCH!!! WAFDA will be there in strength, as this is what we are all about, promoting for the future of our sport!
And besides all that, FREE HOT DOGS, FREE HOMEMADE ICE CREAM , and a CHEAP pol party... what more could you want?
Setting up around 11:00-11:30, starting at 12, and then finishing at 5pm for dinner and Ice cream, then pool party from 6-8pm!
Best way to get there is to get off at the Chester Exit (#34) on I -540, go East until you hit highway 71 (away from Chester) then turn to the North (left). It's about 6 miles from Chester Exit to the Park.

Thanks Roger. I love how you can always find just the right pics to post on here!! And I have actually thrown SEVERAL shots off of that first overlook down into the playground area (almost aced my own kid one day!! ) :0
This is going to be a really fun and educational day. I wish I could say I am going to have an AWESOME 18 hole layout out there for all the disc golfers to enjoy.... but maintenance constraints from all the bad weather this year, and a desired focus on NEW players and families, has lead a plan for 4 or 5 SHORT holes and LOTS of teaching. HOWEVER, I was told we would be free to do some extra layout stuff down below, if we wanted, for fun after the educational part is over, or IF it is a slow day (which I am hoping against). So come on out, support disc golf, and have some fun at this amazing Arkansas State Park. Lots to do besides just the Recreation Day activities in this park.... fishing, hiking, boating, camping, etc... Just use this as your excuse to get out there!

I have been contacted by the lady at Lake Fort Smith again, and she is saying this would be a GREAT time to put together a plan for putting in a disc golf course at the lake. She would like to see a possible layout and a tournament held to show the city what a course could do for them. And she then thinks we can put in a proposal and get a course put in out there. We have interest shown from the higher-up city officials, so... we need to move on it! :) I mentioned a possible Ice Bowl out there, to tie in the "Charity" to the benefits... and she came back with an idea of doing an event and raising funds for the course itself to be put in.... What do we think? Anyone know the next step we need to take? I'm looking over aerial maps and etc. and am going to make a trip out there to walk it, once deer season ends.

This land has mega possibilities - could be a championship caliber course which we really need in the area IMO
It would be neat to see double or triple tees going from easy to gold level
I'd say price some baskets and get a feel for what type of tee's and signage and cost
price it from 9 or 18 baskets, toe board tee's to concrete, give em some options and a plan for growth - i.e. is there room for more than 1 course in the future?
make sure they can be maintained
as far as a temp course/tourney, I'm all for it - I do wonder if we'd get better numbers of participants in warmer weather and I don't mind golfers helping with fundraising however is this something they could already budget with available money?
they need to understand that the initial investment is way cheap compared to the park use this will generate them, tournaments are cool however most of the courses users are likely to be pure recreational golfers
I'll be calling you later Willie to discuss it!!
