On my way in I saw a Shell at 3.49. That's ridiculous. Spend your money at the smaller gas stations. The big ones seem to be gouging for brand name gas... we need to let em know that ain't cool. Of course, next week, theyll be the first ones with gas and will be able to get the crazy prices... just say no!

COLONIAL PIPELINE RESTARTS SYSTEM

August 31, 2005

Colonial Pipeline today announced that it is safely restarting its pipeline. The initial restart of Colonial's Main lines 1 and 2 is scheduled to begin within the next several hours.

Initial service restoration will provide between 25% and 35% of Colonial's normal operating capacity. Both gasoline and distillate service is included in this system restart. Colonial's first priority through all of these restart activities is the protection of public safety and the environment.

Following this baseline restoration of partial service, Colonial will continue with the previously announced installation of distributed generation equipment along its system in Louisiana and Mississippi to provide electric power. This power will allow Colonial to gradually increase the rate of throughput on the system throughout the weekend.

Colonial anticipates that the maximum percentage of normal capacity that these interim measures will provide is between 50% and 60%. Colonial continues to work closely with local electrical utilities as they begin to restore power along the pipeline.

Colonial Pipeline, headquartered in Alpharetta, Ga., delivers a daily average of 100 million gallons of gasoline, home heating oil, aviation fuel and other refined petroleum products to communities and businesses throughout South and the Eastern United States. Colonial consists of more than 5,500 miles of pipeline, originating at Houston, Texas, and terminating at the New York harbor.

Yesterday my fience said that at a local (and admittatly high priced) gas station gas was $2.699/gallon when she went to work and $3.299/gallon on the way home.

Looking around the Twin Cities I've seen anything from $2.80 to $3.30 per gallon.

Gas went up $0.50 a gallon at some stations to $2.99 a gallon. Nowhere is over $3 yet for regular. Our regular is 85 octane though, not the fancy 87 octane you all get. Everyday this week, the gas has gone up $0.10 a gallon between getting to work and going to lunch. This morning I learned and filled up.

The sales guys at the local dealership where I bought my bike said that they were having one of their best days ever in terms of sales...and it was a Wednesday night...usually their slowest night of the week for sales.

I'm keeping the Rover for inclement weather (not too much of that here in Austin, where we can ride pretty much year-round), or for trips to the lake with the dogs, etc. But I'll be using the bike for a daily commuter from now on.

The cost per barrel went up before this hurricane situation and that why the gas prices were so high in the first place. So really if we had cheaper crude oil it would also be cheaper after it was refined wouldnt it???

I predicted right....during lunch break today (noon to one) gas went up at least $0.20 per gallon. $2.79 is now the cheapest. For 85 octane gas!

Granted we are not quite to the depths of the south and California yet, but keep in mind we have lower gas taxes, lower octanes, and no emmission requirements. I imagine it will hit $3.50 before the end of Labor Day weekend. Everyone around here drives somewhere for the weekend. It is a western state traditional.

WRONG, last I saw, they were paying about 27 cent per gallon. Think about it, Iraq has it's own refinery and there is NO shipping cost or profit needed (all oil wells and the refinery is owned by the government of Iraq)

Iraq also has no taxes. The government is totally suported by Oil sales. (which we by 2% of our oil from)

lets get one more thing correct.

about 1/3rd of the gas in the USA comes out of the South effected by the hurricane. That is why you see parts of that country out of Gas like Georga.

What Bush is doing is letting just enough oil out of the reserves to make sure the Oil Refineries that are operational do NOT run out of oil. (he wants them to run at full copacity) There is no Oil being pumped out of the Gulf of Mexico right now and that is one of our main supplies (for the souther half of the USA)

That and everyone is panicking and buying up all the current supplies. There was 20 days worth of gas in the system if all the refineries were shut down right now.

I just heard prices were going to raise again in winter. Can anybody explain that?

Sep 01 2005, 07:30 PM
In the winter many states have additional additives/regulations on gas. In areas prone to inversions (stagnant air), the exhaust from cars is very significant. By adding things like ethanol, or cleaning up the gas a bit the overall damaging effects of gas are reduced. All of the additives cost money. The gas companies pass that cost on to the consumers.

Specially with Ethanol, it hurts your gas milage by more than 10%, some autos as much as 25%.

Most Liberals are pacifist weenies. Most of these weenies don't own guns.

So, when you espouse "shooting" a Hummer driver (would that include Land Rover drivers, too?)...remember, we're likely to be better armed than you are, and we will shoot back.

You know those private jets that Martin Sheen, Randi Rhodes, and Al Sharpton flew in to get to Crawford, TX to help Saint Sheehan protest the "War for Oil"? Now, bring a Prius into one of those neighborhoods, and you're definitely going to be 1) approached at every stop sign and asked "what'ch'you lookin' for?" 2) beaten up and robbed.

Pizza, you are clueless on the ethanol issue. I'll take your word for it on the Texas air quality, since I've never been to Texas, but you are totally out of touch about the gasoline bidness. Ethanol might decrease gas mileage on some cars, but only by 1-2%. Since 10% of the 'gas' being pumped into the car contains ethanol you can do the math to see that it's still much more efficient than running straight petroleum-based fuel. Cars that are equipped to be 'ethanol hybrids' can run much higher ethanol content with the only real side effects being drastically reduced emissions (and obviously much lower petroleum content).

Well, if ignorance is bliss, I guess Rooster is one happy dude.

Let's assume that each 'pacifist weenie' flew their own Gulfstream and went through an entire 2000 gallon 'tank' of gas on the trip. I'll do the math for ya, Roostie, that would be 6000 gallons (3 pacifist weenies times 2000 gallons). Even if there were only 1000 active PDGA members, I think it's safe to say that they'd use more than 6 gallons of gas this year (you see, 6000 divided by 1000 equals 6).

I know I shouldn't ask. I drive through similar areas in Fort Worth, not looking for anything but a short cut. I've also walked neighborhoods like, uh registering voters with Rev Jackson. I've also walked neighborhoods like you described in DC and Houston...got lost. Some of the poorest people are the nicest and most giving. Not all poor people are doing/dealing drugs, just like not all disc golfers are doing/dealing drugs.

Oh, and as probably the one of the most liberal people here, I would have to say you are correct. I would never shoot anyone, definitely not just for wasting a resource. It's just not my style. I would probably walk up to them and tell them how I feel or give them a pamphlet that they would consider a waste of a different resource and thrown away. Sep 02 2005, 12:52 PM
Don't even get me started on the horror that is diesel...

Sep 02 2005, 01:24 PM
Anyone that thinks diesel is a 'horror' doesn't know too much about diesel. It can burn as clean as gas with higher efficiency (with the proper additives). Right now, the additives aren't very cost effective, but I'd be shocked if that didn't change in the not too distant future.

Key words in your post "It can burn as clean as gas ". Right now it doesn't. If you get a diesel and put on a particulate matter filter, an oxidation catalyst, and use B20 or B100 (bio diesel at 20% and 100% respectively) then you are good in my book. Heck, if you even did two of the three you would be doing pretty darn good. And a switch to bio diesel at 100% reduces particulate emissions by 40%.

The Particulate Matter Filter can only really be used if you have access to ultra-low sulfur diesel, which is 8-25 cents more per gallon than regular diesel. Oh, and the filter costs between $5000 and $10,000. The benefit of the filter is substantial reducing particulate emissions by 60%-90%.

The oxidation catalyst will reduce particulate emissions by 20-30% and only costs between $1000-$2500. It can be used with regular diesel fuel as well.

If you were to take a particulate filter, an oxidation catalyst, and burn only ultra-low sulfur diesel or B20/B100, you would operate as clean as a standard gas car. You would add $6,000-$12,500 to the cost of your diesel car or truck. You would also significantly add to the cost of your fuel assuming you even had access to it.

How many people are willing to do this? I would wager to say very, very few. Buying a diesel car or truck gives the illusion of helping with emission problems and gas shortages. That is why they are a horror. Come out west. You will see all the brand spanking new diesel pickups spewing out the blackest clouds of smoke you have ever seen in your life. I know the VW diesels and BMW diesels aren't as bad, but they aren't much better.

Oh, and I worked on a project where we tried to figure out ways to help bus fleets clean up their emmissions, so I do know a little bit about diesel.

Sep 02 2005, 01:42 PM
How do bio-diesel's emmissions suit you?

I ordered a Prius when gas hit $1.50

I recieved it when gas hit $1.79

At $2.99 a gallon, I am just slightly POed!

And I am tired of SUV drivers asking me if I want to trade. F-NO I don't want to trade. I was smart and responsible and bought a fuel effiecient car when it was available.

And just because I get better gas milage doesn't make it cheaper for me. I still pay the same per gallon as a Hummer driver.

But with gas prices so high now, I am afraid of where I park my car because of fear it may get stolen. What a shame it would be if someone stole a vehicle because of it's gas mileage. If I didn't work 25 miles from where I live and across 2 mountains, I would ride my bike. When I look for a new job after I get done with grad school I will be getting a job and a home located near mass transportation routes.

Chicago's L looks very appealing right now. :D

AJ, I worked for 5 years at an R&D facility for one of the (formerly) major oil companies. We were able to significantly reduce diesel emissions (using low sulphur base) through additives, even more so depending on how much the engine manufacturers wanted to 'tweak' their combustion chamber designs. If the same amount of $$ was spent on diesel tech as it is on gasonline engines we'd see even more significant results. It's getting better, but still not there yet.

Of course, the problem we had in R&D was when they decided that it wasn't cost effective to 'waste time' worrying about emissions and helping auto manufacturers to meet CAFE standards. We were forced to focus on finding the cheapest way to hit minimum standards, rather than a way to reduce emissions and engine deposit buildup. Then they laid 80% of the place off.

However, the stock price did increase 7%, and the CEO got an $11 million or thereabouts bonus.

If you will kindly send me money to help pay for my tanks of Gas. Trust me, although Bush is profiting from all of this, we all know it's not his fault. It is, infact, YOUR dum basses that voted for him.

This is an example of why I should have MTL on my ingnor list. Stupidity abounds. #1 how can a sitting president "Proft" when he is not allowed to own anything. Trust me, if he was Profiting, we would know about it because web sites like Moveon.org keeps a CLOSE eye on him.

Normally, I am not a fan of chain mail. I hate it. But, this one intrigued me - an idea for the consumers to pull together and FORCE a price war within the Oil Companies. I don't know if it would actually work, but if enough people actually stuck to it, who knows? Makes good fodder for the DB, if nothing else:

"Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK"

After that, the letter goes on about how easy it is to reach 300 million people if we all send it to 10 friends, and they all send it to 10, and ......well, you've all seen it before.

Let the political discussion begin!

Dear Friend, Please consider participating in the September 10th boycott on the purchase of gasoline. At the very least limit your travel by consolidating trips, carpooling, and mass transit. Thanks
IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.
AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES.
THEREFORE Sept 10TH HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT TO THEM DAY"
> >>AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY.
WAITING ON THIS ADMINISTRATION TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO?
REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING,BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY,WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.

As the owner of a Pizza Delivery shop, I find it good to be able to tell my drivers where to get the cheapest gas in town. This way they can stop and fill up while on delivery.

I also listen to the radio, I have been able to save A LOT of money by filling up that day, or trying to push it off as long as possible to take advantage of rizing and falling gas prices. I don't think I put gas in my truck higher than $2.86 so far.

I filled up before gas prices rose up big time and waited as long as I could. I only fill up about 2 times a month, so I am able to take advantage of falling gas prices by waiting as long as possible.

BTW, Gas prices should drop about another 5-10 cents in the next week, then it will rise for Thanksgiving weekend.

Forget about gas prices at the pump. The big danger is political. Shrub finally got it right when he said that we are addicted to oil, even though he's not really going to do anything about it. (Even as he spoke this week the pertinent administration departments were preparing to lay off huge numbers of the researchers they employ already working in that area.)

Personally, I think we should tax gasoline to be $4/gal right now and use the money for intensive alternative fuels research and implementation. (And I own a Surbuban!)

We may have just reached 'peak oil' extraction per year worldwide, this year. If not this year, then it will be within 10 years. China and India and the rest of the developing world want oil, too. Every single person who can watch a television or listen to a radio wants to live exactly like we do, in a material sense - and it doesn't 'scale up'. If nothing else, the richest people in those two countries will be able to buy oil and push our price up; and the only thing we could do to stop that would be to nuke 'em. (Thank goodness for presidential term limits.)

Anyway, here's the latest from Thomas L. Friedman of the NYT:

Will Pigs Fly?
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
Published: February 3, 2006

Well, it wasn't exactly Nixon to China. But it wasn't bean bag either. I'd say the president's State of the Union speech, when it came to calling for an end to our oil addiction and a real push to improve our educational competitiveness, was more like Nixon goes to New Mexico. It was an important change in direction and tone but still a long way from China, a long way from a definitive change in policy and implementation.

Oh, come on, Friedman, get real! The president throws a few paragraphs your way and you go all weak in the knees. Show some spine, man! You need to trash this thing. You know these guys are not serious. This is a president who once called for putting a man on Mars and then just dropped it. You assumed they were going to do the Iraq war right remember? Look where that got you, you #$*&$!. You should have listened to your wife!

Yeah, I know all that. But here's what else I know: Mr. Bush is going to be president for the next three years. We do not have three years to lose not on climate change, energy efficiency or improving math/science education. I am not going to sit around for the next three years just trashing these guys and praying that some Democrat gets elected and does all the right things. We don't have time, you #$*&$!!

I heard the president use language about the necessity of breaking our oil addiction through innovation on renewable technologies without mentioning drilling in Alaska which I've never heard before. When the president changes language on an issue like this in a sustained manner (and we still have to see if it will be sustained), the whole country and bureaucracy start to talk differently.

All you talk about is talk. How do we lock in some action?

One way is to write your senator and congressman and tell them to support the Vehicle and Fuel Choices for American Security Act. Already supported by key Republicans and Democrats, this draft bill aims to reduce oil consumption by 2.5 million barrels a day by 2015 and 7 m.b.d. by 2025 much more than the president's proposal. The bill offers ailing U.S. automakers loan guarantees and other incentives on the condition that they use the money to retool their assembly lines to sharply increase their production of flex-fuel cars, which run on any combination of alcohol and gasoline, as well as hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars and trucks.

The bill is a way to save large amounts of oil quickly, bail out Detroit today before it goes totally bust tomorrow and give Americans real fuel choices. "If you want to send your dollars to the worst regimes in the Middle East, use gasoline if you want to send your dollars to the best farms and communities in the Middle West, then use alcohol made from the agricultural resources we grow at home," said the energy expert Gal Luft.

The technology we need to make a huge reduction in our gasoline consumption is already here, hybrid cars that run on flex-fuels. No great breakthrough is required. What's needed are more buyers. While enticing Detroit to make these more fuel-efficient vehicles is a good idea, we also need a gasoline tax to entice every consumer to buy one. The president rejects a gasoline tax. He's wrong. He can't end our oil addiction unless he ends his tax-cutting addiction.

Good luck, pal. These guys never connect the dots. The president doesn't see that his global democracy-promotion agenda is going to be stymied unless America leads the world away from oil. We are heading into an era we've never seen before: $50- to $60-a-barrel oil for a long time. Five years of that will strengthen the worst regimes and worst corruption trends across the globe, and everyone is just going to coddle these oil regimes to get their crude.

You're right: addicts never tell the truth to their pushers. So here's my bottom line: I'm glad the president is changing his rhetoric on energy and says he is changing his funding priorities. It makes for a great headline. But he has to go much further if he wants to make a great difference. There's no pain-free solution. Remember how President Kennedy ended his May 25, 1961, State of the Union speech calling for a moon shot? He said: "I have not asked for a single program which did not cause one or all Americans some inconvenience, or some hardship, or some sacrifice."

Pigs will fly before Bush says that.

You may be right. And if he fails to carry through with this energy initiative, I'll be the first to rip him for it. In the meantime, I prefer to give him a new reputation to live up to. You never know. ... And by the way, pal, you got a better horse to ride right now?

Parkntwoputt
Feb 04 2006, 02:40 AM
In addition to what needs to happen to end our addiciton to oil is the halting to our need of vehicle dominace. We have too many people out there that say "I need the biggest vehicle on the road, just in case I get into an accident, my family is protected." Well it is because of this, people are wasting money on gas guzzeling SUV's and endangering us consumers with half a brain to purchase smaller fuel effiecent cars to keep costs down. (Yes, I drive a Toyota Prius).

We can already see some of the "protect the family" mentality giving away to the "I cannot afford $100/week in gasoline to drive my oversized SUV.", by looking at used car lots. Heck, they cannot give away used SUV's, while my car is the only vehicle in history to appriecate after it pulls off of the car lot. Umm, are we getting at something here.

Bush mentions using alternative fuels to propell vehicles what about cutting out all loans and tax rebates to Detroit auto makers until they get their passenger vehicle mpg average above 40mpg. (We will always need trucks in the commericial industry). The american auto makers have the technology to create high mpg vehicles, but you have companies like Dodge reintroducing their Charger and continuing to fuel this addiction to oil.

Why do we need to be first at everything (as in acceleration). How about we become the best at fuel economy. By reducing our dependency on oil, we will take the leverage away from the radical eastern countries that supply us with oil. If we do not depend on them for our economies welfare, then we are less resistant to turning their country into glass.

Right now we are standing on the pivot of the econmomical/poltical teeter-todder. If we move towards fuel economy and less depence on oil, we can over throw the countries the threaten our nations security. And then, our soccer mom's will feel comfortable hauling Timmy around in their Ethenol/Electic Hybrid.

If the average US car got 40 mpg, then we would not need a drop of oil from the Middle East.

NYT editorial today: "An increase in fuel-efficiency standards to 40 miles per gallon in 10 years a reasonable expectation, with no new technology would save about 2.5 millions barrels a day, which is just about what we import from the Middle East now."

Bush mentions using alternative fuels to propell vehicles what about cutting out all loans and tax rebates to Detroit auto makers until they get their passenger vehicle mpg average above 40mpg.

Think about that.

Not sure about the factual basis of this statement, but a respectable car mechanic told me about 3 months ago that "the car manufacturers can definitely make their cars get double or even triple the gas mileage through a few simple changes under the hood." Something about catalytic converters, but I don't know shizzen about cars so it was pretty foreign to me.

It shows an Iranian holding a gun to a gasoline pump priced at $2.19/gal. The Iranian is saying "Nobody make a move or the low price gets it", in the background there is another Iranian tinkering with an atomic bomb.

Since when did $2.19 become a cheap price for gas? It should really get back below $1.50/gallon and $40/barrell. After all, China and India's infrastructure did not just start up overnight. Since when does a country say "hey lets start using up all the oil and steel in the world"?

"Infrastructures" don't speak. Attorneys do.

Two days ago I paid a $995 invoice for 70 percent of the volume of my 1870's farmhouse's propane tank.

The real cost of a month and a half of or so of my family's heating bills is ridiculously high. If we were able to apply most of what is confirmed as the best scientific knowledge about energy, we literally could do "twice as much, with half as much." [Thank goodness my family is inside Dubya's force field - due to the fact that recently we make a lot of money per year. (A very good thing.)]

We pay what we do because our tax dollars pay someone else, up front, a lot of money. How much do you think it should cost to heat a family's living space for one winter? $100? $500? $1,000? More? I suspect that a lot of PDGA members are in real financial difficulty this winter.

I agree that there is the possibility of problems with hybrids in catstrophic accidents. But the only reported problems and concerns I have read are with using the Jaws of Life on a Hybrid.

The Battery is Warranteed for 150k miles. By the time these hybrids reach those kinds of miles, batteries will be a lot cheaper. Also, it is a very basic battery, not much different then the ones in remote controlled cars.

My insurance went down when I purchased my car. Given that it has dual front and side impact airbags is one thing. But if people will stop "needing" their Ford Expeditions, Chevy Tahoes, Cadillac Escalades, Hummers for commuting then the roads will become a lot safer.

I truly see no useful purpose or advantage to owning a SUV. It is a vanity market, tell me something that a SUV can do that a truck or a car cannot do?

As far as repairs go. Almost everything in a hybrid is standard in a regular car with exception to the hybrid system itself. As hybrids become a larger percentage of the automobile market corner mechanic shops will have the knowledge to work on them. Until then, you are forced to take the vehicle to the dealer for any hybrid repair. But did I mention that the hybrid system (as well as the battery) is warranteed for 150k miles?

Please tell me about these "Life endangering crash tests".

That will change over time. maintainance, Actually it cost less to maintain a hybrid than a full gas auto and life endangering crash tests. One of the biggest myths about hybrids. The high votage hybrids use a orange cable that is located on the UNDERSIDE of the car (passanger side too). Also, most hybrids have NO high votage wires from front to back. ALSO, most hybrid cars have NO power when the car is not moving, they have auto shut off swiches when the car is stopped or when there has been a crash.

It's not that I'm against hybrids...its' just that they're ahead of the thinking curve. I don't want to spend 3 G's every 30K miles for new batteries Toyota has yet to get a battery back and they WARRENTY it of 100K miles. They have been making the prius sense 2000. ALSO, the only time you have to replace the battery is if it was damaged in an accident. The batteries are made to last as long as the car itself. or $100/ month for insurance First I have seen anything about this, it is true that a hybrid cost about $3k-$6K more than is gas counterpart, so in that case, insurance would be slightly higher. (not enough to matter) , or sit in a wreck until the electrician can disconnect the power source so the EMT's won't get shocked. so far in 6 years that hybrids have been available, this has YET to happen. It really take a HUGE crash to even need to cut into a car. The High voltage wire on a few hybrid card that need them are bright orange so EMT's know about them. They are also located on the underside of the car below the passanger seat.
I like the idea of not using oil, but there's got to be another way!?!

I am in favor of the hybrid cars, you just have to see if they are what you need. Several of the new cars comming out as hybrids only save you about 10% on your gas milage. It would take a lot of stop and go traffic for them to pay for themselves.

But if you do mostly city (stop and go) traffic, they may be the best suit for you. Being in the pizza delivery business, I am looking at getting one in the next few years. (waiting for the prices to drop and pay off my SUV)

I believe my car (2004 Prius) has a curb weight of just over 3k. It is a mid-sized sedan by technical measurements so it is not a compact.

The engine itself is the standard small block Toyota 1.8L 4cyl.

The battery pack is about 30 inches long, by 12 inches wide and about 2-3 inches tall. It weighs approximately 100lbs. and is located just behind/under the rear seat to act as a counter balance for the engine/motor combination.

From what I have read, when slowing down, the electric motors switch from power user to power generator.

If our A/C is on it is always running off Gas, is this right?

Parkntwoputt
Feb 14 2006, 06:46 PM
Actually both of you are wrong.

The electric motor and gasoline engine are side-by-side connected to the axle with via a CVT.

The Prius recharges in two ways.
1) Regenerative brakeing. Using sensors, it converts the heat from the brakes, when applied, into electricity.
2) The motor can be turned using other sources of power to regenerate electricity. This can be done via the gasoline engine, or by the wheels when coasting.

As far as the A/C, it is ran off of electricity. So the A/C does not affect gas milage. However, the heating element is based off of engine coolant temperature like a conventional car. So the engine runs heating up the coolant during the winter to heat the car. This causes abnormally lower gas mileage in temperatures under 37 degrees, (there is a warning light on the dashboard for this). The reduction in gas mileage is around 10-12%. It makes me wonder why Toyota did not install electric coils as heating elements.

There is no Honda currently avaiable as a pure hybrid. The Insight, Civic, and Accord hybrid are electric assist vehicles. Basically the difference is that a pure hybrid can be propelled without the use of the gasoline engine, the Prius, Highlander, and soon Camry, along with the Ford Escape are pure hybrids. All Honda vehicles must be propelled via the gasoline engine. The electric motor mearly assists the gas engine to raise effiecency.

Geez. I am impressed. My Suburban cuts out at 95 mph.

Here are a couple of nuances to the vehicle debate:

(a) Since I got my Suburban almost 6 years ago, I have several times averaged out the number of Person Miles Per Gallon (PMPG) for a month or two at a time. I've averaged pretty close to 50 PMPGs, due to the number of people onboard, especially for long trips. So that beats out two single people driving their 25 MPG cars around for the same number of miles. (Behavior can overcome design.)

(b) I also pay a "carbon tax" on my Suburban's emissions, I think it's $37/yr: http://www.driveneutral.org/. It might be something others are interested in.

That said, try to suspend your disbelief and imagine this:

A world in which US cars averaged only 40 mpg would eliminate our need for oil from the Middle East. Imagine what would become of the Middle East without the dollars we pay for oil.

Why doesn't Dubya push for a tax to make gasoline cost $5/gallon, which would create a fleet of 40 mpg/average in 3-4 years? If we didn't need the oil, maybe they would understand what a cartoon is.

Hmm..I can carry four people and thier gear in my Sentra 34PG. The added weight would reduce MPG. I wouldn't mind putting a wager against a Suburban. I mean you don't carpool everyday do you. Your aren't really as Green as you want to lead people to believe. Gas prices going to $5 dollars would not in any way cause the U.S. to use less oil. We need to drill more in Alaska. E85 is the ticket, 105 oct and burns cleaner and cooler and is made from corn so it is renewable. From a performance stand point it kicks tail in my mid 12 sec WRX STI.

Cheap to make and refined in the us. This will create jobs in refineries which we have not built any new gas refineries since the 70's, the government will be able to stop subsidizing corn, and farms will become very profitable again.

Gas milage will go down a bit but at 20-30 cents less than 87 oct now who cares.......

The National average just broke $2.50 today. They (whomever they are) are predicting it to cap out around $3.00 this summer.

It seems they are going to quit using BT/? (what ever it is) a fuel additive that in poisoninig ground water. The Government is not going to pass a bill to protect the gas makers, so they are just going to quit using it and replacing it with Ethinal. But that would increase the use of Ethenal to amost 50% more then capacity. (Ethenal prices jumped up 50 cents per gallon this week to $2.75)

They are investors. People who speculate and basically gamble (invest in oil futures). Essentially the only people making money off of the price of oil. They would love to see gasoline over $5.

That $3 estimate is probably going to be low. Look for $4 at some point this summer.

SMUG :D That was funny, I downloaded it last night.

I filled up my tank today for $2.39 with my Krogers card.

I used Gasbuddy.com to find the cheapest gas in my area and only drove 2 extra miles to get gas. (I saved 12 cents per gallon or $1.73 per my tank by doing this over the cheapest directly on the path on my way home)

What is the explanation for the 25% increase in gasoline prices over the last month? If this keeps up, we will be paying almost $10/gallon by Winter.

I am doing what I can to reduce dependence on gasoline. Are you?

Wow, that was 10 days ago, cheapest price I can find right now is $2.69. 30 cents in 10 days. By summer time that would put gas at $5.09 per gallon

one analyst report referred to in a recent article by william buckley (who regardless of what you think about his side of the fence is certainly a straight-up guy) states that just one tanker sunk or knocked out of service in the gulf (think isreal v. iran here) would take oil to $100 virtually overnight.

worse case scenario (mine anyway): big hurricane season again takes out gulf of mexico rigs, processing facilities and a major city or two + civil war in iraq + isreal v. iran + isreal v. hamas = you'll be real lucky to stay under $5 in 2006.

Sandalman, if your worst case scenaio unfolds we'll be worried about ration cards instead of price.

hmmm... lets work up some odds...

hurricanes seriously disrupt GoM production and refineries again... 75%
iraq descends into civil war... 33%
isreal punches iran... 40%
isreal punches hamas... 60%

thats yields a 5.9% chance, so its roughly 20:1 that rationing cards are in our immedaite future. dang, that might be long odds for a horse race, but scary odds for this topic!

They ( the oil nazie's) can say whay ever they want to as to why the price of gas is so high right now,but we all know it's just plain and simple GREED
Whats even worse is our government is not going to do anything about it,oh they'll wait for the price to top out at about $4.00 and then they'll say we're going to start a probe.
I say " PROBE THIS " :o
Los Angeles, Ca. is at $ 3.10 a gallon ( average ) for the cheap stuff, the corner station by my house is $ 3.45 for the cheap stuff

Premium is a waste of money unless your owner's manual says you need higher octane gas.

This is why oil should not be traded on the stock market. F those guys getting rich on a necessity item.

My hybrid is almost getting too expensive to drive. I cringe every time I pass a gas station because gas is $0.05 higher then it was the day before.

This is absolute BS, and with Bush invading Iran now, and oil traders fearing they will lose more money they will jump oil prices well over $100 a barrell. During the Katrina disaster, I heard an analyst say that in order to hit $3/gallon for gas oil will have to be $100 a gallon. At $70/barrel, the price should be in the low $2's.

Time to buy a bicycle.

They should make it illegal to drive vehicles that get under 20mpg without commerical purpose.

Soccer moms do not need to drive a Ford Expedition to pick up Timmy from day care in a metropolitan area.

Tax people with SUV's, and put that money into research for alternative fuels.
