Well there may be a little slow down on construction as it came to my wife's attention that I cut down a tree yesterday that had white bloom's on it. She is convinced it was a dogwood, and has threatened bodily harm if any others are cut down. (She completely doesn't understand the need for clear fairways, no matter what the tree!)
Anyway, I will still be cutting, cedars, briars, and known trees, but I will have to give another week or two on the others to see what all blooms out. Then once the blooms are gone I can conveniently forget which trees had them! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
But the front nine is playable if anyone is coming through the area and wants a preview, just let me know. Just remember it is object golf, only one actual basket on the course, the rest are all barrels.

Mar 26 2008, 11:52 AM
always, always, always leave the dogwoods and the red buds will shoot around them or change the direction of your fairway. they bring a signiture quality to your course that you cant easley replace :(
AlmaWillie
Mar 26 2008, 12:41 PM
You are right, of course. I love the look of the trees too. My only problem is the place has already been "select cut" before we bought it, which means that it is just clear enough to let the briars and little stuff grow up. :( I am trying to get the course in without the removal of any big trees that are left. That is not always to the benefit of the fairway, but I have managed so far. Unfortunately, to get clearings, I am removing many smaller trees. While most of these are undesireables anyway, just scrub stuff, I am now sure that I have removed some that would have been better left.
We will just have to give them some time, and then I will do what I can to go around them.
Thanks for the advice, I am sure my wife paid you well! :D
(I hate when she is right!!)
Randal
Mar 26 2008, 03:11 PM
measure twice cut once and you'll be fine, remember for every fairway you put in you lose 5 that could have been. its the the burden we course designers must bare

OH MY GOD!!! it's lake fayetteville all over . just don't let her pull the baskets :o.
AlmaWillie
Mar 28 2008, 02:40 PM
Yeah, and that wouldn't be hard since there is only one true basket on the course, and it is portable!! :(
All the other "baskets" are just barrels that can be rolled away!
So of course I am being a good boy, and watching where I cut. But it still won't be long. Looking at about another month to month and a half. (Gotta give all the trees time to bloom) :D

Yeah man, the banjos come full force in Chester! We be country folks!! As a matter of fact, I think the DG bash we have will be called the "Backwoods Bash".
It would be great to have ya'll up for a round though. I know Shawna would enjoy having a lady around to play the course with, and I would be interested to see how a "really" advanced player, such as yourself, would score on the course. Most of the holes are fairly short, but they are pretty tight fairways. Let us know when if you see a good weekend coming up and we'll try to get it setup.
AlmaWillie
Apr 06 2008, 09:10 PM
Update time, after a weekend with a tractor! (Why I didn't make a mini this weekend)
I have unofficial length numbers on all holes, with the total course coming in at 5,126'. This includes an ace run 180' up a driveway size fairway, a 480' hole you can throw with a putter, a 351' shot off a dock on a pond over 180' of water, and a 415' u-turn left, just to name a few of the more interesting ones. I say this is all "unofficial" b/c I have 1 hole that is not completely set-up yet and I have 3 that need a lot of clearing. So these numbers can change. I also am considering combining two and making a new #18. Still playing with it. :)
The best news though is that I now have 13 playable holes!! If only they didn't have skips in the middle.
Anyway, it is coming along. And the dogwoods are blooming, redbuds are bloomed, so I can resume the cutting. If the rain will hold off I'll have this thing together in another 2-3 weeks. Ya'll get ready to PARTY!!!!!

The course got it's first play by two lefties today. After playing Alma I invited the two Chris' up to shoot through the front nine of my course. Since lttle Chris had just won big Chris' tags, he was more than willing to try and get them back. I told them the front nine was in good playing shape, but the back was still thick in places. We played the first nine, and from the comments I think they liked it, but little Chris was losing after nine and wanted to play the back nine. We played 10-14, skipped 15 b/c of how thick it is, and threw half our bags off of 16 (515ft downhill) then called it quits. I know that those holes were not nearly as enjoyable due to the briars and brush. But hopefully they left with an overall good impression.
Maybe the one who can post on here, will take this as an opportunity to let us know what he thought. And won't worry about hurting my feelings. :)

May 05 2008, 09:54 AM
Alright guys. I wish someone had told me how fast CRAP grows on a course when spring arrives!! Anyway, it looks like the party may have to only include the first nine holes, as I am keepng them up, instead of working on the others (I may pull out 13 or 14 holes by then). But it is still going to happen.
The preliminary thought is to have a round of DG and then eat some grilled burgers and dogs (maybe something more) and then maybe another round of DG before dark.
This will be happening before Alma greens as any money we can get for the food and DG will be used as funds for that tourney! (Of course I could see some money changing hands the day of this party too :) Probably in "mini" style with a couple of divisions.
Ya'll keep watching as a set date should be up soon!!

Looking at the schedule of DG and my schedule, it looks like the only open weekends for Arkansas (before Greens) are June 7th and June 21st. I know KC Wide Open is the weekend of the 7th, but don't know how many are going there.

Are you talkijng about the MAYOR mowing out there or what? Because that would be great!!
We're talking about general maintenance mowing at Alma along the top of the bluff being done on a more regular schedule than the past by city workers(Holes 1 thru 4)
the spillway area (holes 5, 6 & 7) requires more of a brush hogging style of mow, probably won't see it happen until right before the Greens
down thru the woods is less maintenance, mostly weed eating stuff, will probably be done by us (holes 10-18)

While the Poll isn't "officially" over, lets make this thing OFFICIAL anyway!!
Backwoods Bash 2008 - June 7th - Chester, Arkansas
Play begins at 1:00.
We are going to have a mini / dinner/ party in Chester Arkansas (dead center between Ft. Smith and Fayetteville) at Alma Willie's house. It is going to be mainly for fun, and also to benefit the AlmaGreens tourney! It will be played mini style, with a small pay in ($5), with groups playing as they get a group together to go out on the course. A person can also play multiple rounds, if they wish, but they must pay in each time, and only their best round will be counted. $1 of the entry fee will go to Alma Greens and $1 to an Ace Pot, with a possible kick in of some discs to the ace pot as well. Play will officially end at 7:00 for tabulation of scores and payout. There will at least be three divisions for (Am Men, Pro Men and Women). With good turnout we could go to Junior and Intermediate divisions).
There will be child care available for the ladies so they can play their round(s) too!!!
There will be burgers and hot dogs provided, Bring Your Beverage of Choice, as all we will have is water. You will be asked to give a donation for the dinner, and all donated moneys will go towards Alma Greens as well.
A map of where the course is located and more info will be coming soon!!
Get Ready for a BASH!!!

My wife made a good point too, this probably needs to be RSVP so we will have an idea of how much food to buy. I know there will be last minute changes, but ya'll give me an idea of if you are coming and how many you are bringing.
See ya soon!!!

I got a chance to play Hot Springs for the first time last weekend and felt that I played fairly well. I looked up the one tourney there and saw I scored really well, except I played short tees (didn't know there was a difference until hole 6, and I didn't want to start over) and I am sure the tourney was long tees.
If anyone has shot the shorts, let me know how you scored as a basis for my score of an even, 54. As a side note: I played the whole course two-finger, as I am still having some hip problems and can't rotate through a backhand drive. I was never good backhand, but at least felt good here, and am getting ready for HOTB!!! Watch out all you Intermediate players! :)

54 is a good score, 950ish rated

This is a joke for serious players, but serious for beginners, or people who are serious about getting new people started.
The Wal-Marts in Alma and Van Buren have disc golf starter sets on clearance for $12 at VB and $14 at Alma. They are the Frisbee brand discs that Wal-Mart started carrying last year, which are ridiculously understable (even for my weak arm). But this is a whole set with a driver, midrange, putter, mini, bag, towel and instructional DVD. Definetely a good buy for a newbie. I got one, and am planning on picking up a few more when they drop to $10, for kids at school.
I don't know about any other wal-marts, these are the only ones I have been to lately.
Just thought I would let folks know.

The tee-sign post are in the ground (4x4's), complete with umbrella and bag holders (similar to Ben Geren's)
distances and hole #'s are marked on the post, fancy tee-signs will be up soon
The next tee direction is marked in paint on the bottom of the baskets where it's not obvious
I am gathering some contact info and am putting it on the PDGA Course directory soon
It has been started on dgcoursereview.com by Rusty
technically there are 21 courses in the state now, 19 courses are listed under 18 listings
Burns is under 1 listing, of course there are two 18 hole courses there
JB Hunt is not listed because it's not finished yet (particularly because of no well marked tee-areas)
imo, Greenland should not be included (home-made baskets, no marked tee-areas or signs), Subiaco Abbey has something similiar but is not listed as I think it shouldn't be unless it's permanent with designated tee-areas, there are also a few "private" courses that the owners understandably do not wish listed
Thanks for building another course Pitch

Bell Park in Greenwood, Arkansas (about 15 miles south of Ft. Smith) is installing an 18 hole course, baskets are in their hands, there has been a rough layout put down with stakes/flags, the Greenwood Parks Department has contacted me to get input on the proposed layout
I am hoping to get a carload or more of players to go check it out after Saturday's Ben geren mini, once we say "yeah".......the course is going in the ground, and yes we are able to do multiple sleeves for different pin positions
can you say Grand Opening Tournament
Also, in Alma, a new disc retailer is here!! A to Z Sporting Goods at 3700 N. Hwy 71 is fully stocked with alot better than Academy's selection of Innova, check em' out, they are already onboard for a sponsorship on the Alma Greens :)

This is GREAT, in both respects!!
I can see the addition of the Greenwood course as getting Western Arkansas one step closer to some MAJOR tourneys. With that one we would have 3 18 hole courses within 20 minutes of the Fort! :) You add another at Ben Geren (which is still being discussed) and put some baskets on a certain "object" golf course :Dand you suddenly have 5 REALLY good courses for a BIG event!!
As for A-Z...... AWESOME!!!!
I have been talking to one of the managers/owners (an old high school friend) about putting discs in, but she has never shown a great amount of interest (although they threw some great stuff in for the charity tourney). I don't know who or what made them come around, but I think it will be a success there.
I'm heading there tonight to check out the selection myself and tell them thanks!

OK, I dropped in to A-Z tonight to check out the disc supply, but once I knew that it was setup by Pitch I wasn't as worried about the selection... And I was right! The store had a good selection of all the most popular discs, including several of the "new" Grooves! Some very sweet looking and throwing discs. They also have several Bosses, Star Starfires, KC 12x Wraiths, Desroyers, Glow Discs, and etc. Prices fall right around everyone else $7-16.
Anyone who gets a chance stop in here and see these folks, as the girl I know says she really stuck her neck out with her boss to get these put in, and wants to see them move. If we want to keep a local selection that will help us at tourneys and get discs we want, we need to keep these discs moving through the store! And besides that, if you have never been in A-Z it is WELL worth the drive! So many stores (Sporting Goods, Furniture, Gifts, Clothing, Tools, and a Cafe) all in one spot is a good stop for anyone!

Baskets are being installed today
Several of us worked on concreting the sleeves this week-end, Huge Thanks to Dave Hudson, Roger Knight, Terry Blanton, Willie and Shawna Williams and John Middleton :)
We will be playing from temporary tee's that are marked and staked in the ground for awhile to make sure that we like them before permanent concrete tees are installed, we will also be scoping alternate tee's/pins, we still need a final measurements on hole lengths also
Good chance that hole 8 will probably move, problems with errant shots from hole 11 (elevated tee) getting into hole 8's fairway and we don't really like the close proximity to the fenced off water tower
Look for Phil to start running mini's at Greenwood soon and a Grand Opening Tournament hopefully this Summer

I was wondering if anyone had any info on this course:
I just found a link on the Arkansas Tourism site to a disc golf course at a Lutheran Camp right by Mount Magazine. It has no info on the # of holes or anything. Just that they rent out cabins and have a disc golf course on site.
Anyone ever heard of this or know anything about it?
I sent an email but have got no response so far. Here is the site link:
http://www.arkansas.com/places-to-stay/a...;city=Morrilton (http://www.arkansas.com/places-to-stay/attr_detail.aspx?id=22760&r=River%20Valley&city=Mo rrilton)
And it has a website but really gives no information.

I don't know, wonder if it came from Jackie, his website is here, slipdiscministries.com (http://www.slipdiscministries.com/Discgolfcourseinstallinfo.html) , he pretty much specializes in Christian Camp Disc Golf stuff, there's a course listed on his site at a Christian camp in Siloam Springs
He did the original design at Greenwood (supposedly he laid it out in 3 hours) but we've pretty much tweaked it alot so we have holes over 200 feet and not walking down the fairway that you just threw to get to the next tee

Ok it has begun. I have about half the holes back playable. Looking at another Super Class event in early November (on a Sunday).
I will be renting soem trail clearers and weedeaters on wheels sometime in the coming weeks. I'll need a couple of folks willing to help me clear the few holes that a tractor can't hit. I will pay and provide food and drinks.
Let me know if you are interested in making a few extra bucks doing manual labor, out in the BackWoods!! :)

Willie, you should know that just asking is enough payment for me !!! :)
I'm betting that if you put a time and a place the WAFDA crew will be there if all possible !!!!
plus if we help with the course, we know the karma that we'll receive and thats always important in disc golf !!!! :) :D

It will still be a couple weeks. I am trying to get all I can done with the tractor, while still working on the house.
This will be serious labor though, so I hate not to pay. I'm gonna get the equipment to do it right, and running that stuff over Chester ground will not be easy! I'm gonna rent a wheeled weedeater and a self-propelled trailmower from the local hardware store (unless somebody has either one to rent).

Willie, this sounds like your clearing new holes instead of cleaning the older ones !!!!
Does that mean your going to lose some of the old holes or make the course bigger !!!!
Just guessing maybe connect the bottom holes with the top ones !!!
either way I'm sure the WAFDA crew will be there to help !!!! :) :D

Sep 28 2009, 05:23 PM
No, I just spent many hours with a weedeater, junk mower and loppers last year trying to get it all done. I just don't have the time to spare this year, with the work on the house. I am just gonna rent the equipment and get it all done in one or two days instead of 1 or two weeks.
I sure don't have time to clear out the next nine holes like I want to, even though I do have the general layout already, just too many trees and briars in the way! Maybe next year we can have 27 holes, when I have a tractor full time and no other proijects hanging over my head.

Was very happy to find a new course (unlisted on PDGA or anywhere else) in Mountain View Arkansas (northeast). It is a 9-hole course, and not the best layout I have seen... but still a new course! :) Only problem was I didn't have my discs, and the guy who sells them in town was closed Sun and Mon! :( I'll play it next time..... just need to plan another fishing trip to the White.

Just found out today that the EDGE program is shipping the package to the school tomorrow. :) Should arrive Wednesday of next week. Some last minute changes in course design will have to be made before the baskets can be set. Hoping to have things up and ready by the first weekend in Sept. I'll keep you posted on any changes.

Lots of course work opportunity...
Baskets are in Eric's hands, look for a work day to put them in the ground at Alma Middle School soon :D
Greenwood:
Construction has begun on a real nice "community center building" at Bell Park
this basically eliminates Hole 10 and will force a redesign, initial thoughts are to extend hole 9 50-70 feet back, walk to the left of that basket and create a new 10 straight back along the road to the right - back down towards 11's box but parallel with the road on the right
really to early to tell because we need to fully understand the layout of the new building, the landscaping and parking for it
as of now Hole 10 is pulled, 11 tee box is extended back (taking alot away from the shaping of 11s layout imo) and also brings 12's tee box into harm
we might be able to save 11's tee box, just not sure without understanding the layout of the new building
if 11's box is not usable, this could cause several more holes to change
as of now the land across the road from 1's tee-box is still not part of official park property and the owner has been hesitant to allow us use
I'll be in contact with the Greenwood Parks Dept.to learn more about the full scope of the new building
They are very willing to work with us and love disc golf in Bell Park :)
glad we don't have concrete tees now

Well, Three Holes @ Alma Middle School is officially closed. Went out today and dug up holes one and two. I've staked the places where the new holes are going to be located. It won't be much longer before we have a new nine hole course for our students, area disc golfers, and our surrounding communities to enjoy. :)

Hey all,
Went out this weekend and started moving baskets. I dug four of the eight holes needed to set the new baskets. The former one and two baskets have now been set in, on the new hole two and three. Will hopefully finish digging the remaining holes this week. Would like to cement the collars in this weekend if possible. Will keep you informed.

Hey Eric - a few of us will be at Greenwood on Saturday doing an educational promotion of disc golf as part of a Special Olympics Family Fun Day - supposed to be over by 2pm (I'm probably gonna call you about that later)
I'd be glad to help out after that or any time Sunday - there's a possibility of Greenwood mini's switching from Thurs. to Sunday afternoon this week also due to daylight (depending on Roger's preference)
the following Saturday (18th) is a tournament at Northshore
keep us posted, there are a few of us that would love to help plant those baskets :D

Hey all WAFDA members,
Looks like we're going to shoot for Sunday, Sept 12, @ 1:00 PM to put the remaining baskets in the ground. We have four more holes to dig. I have a hand held auger that works well, plus access to two post hole diggers. We'll need something to mix our cement in. We'll have access to water. Remember guys, this is school property, so no alcohol please. Three of the holes are in place so if you want to bring your disc and try out the new holes. Bring em. See ya Sunday, Savage

Thanks to the WAFDA members today for the help of the setting of the remaining baskets @ Alma Middle School; Roger Knight, Roger Koenigseder, Willie Williams, and Evan McKee. We all played the first round on the new course and it was a blast. Roger Knight has set the new course record at nine under, 45. I shot my first under par round ever today, two under 52, so it made for a special day for me. I hope to have scorecards with the course layout on the back ready in a couple of days. It's good to see the EDGE program benefit our local area schools. Again, Thanks guys!!! The new 9 hole course @ Alma Middle School (AMS) is officially open for play. :):D

Got an interesting invitation today from Lake Fort Smith State Park. I have been talking to a lady there about incorporating disc golf into their summer activities at the park. She sent an email out today asking for input on doing a "recreation" day at the park in June. She is asking for volunteers willing to set up various activities, and run them for the park on a Saturday afternoon. Then at the end of the day they are going to have a pool party and a cookout. They have not set the weekend date yet, but I am trying to get a feel for how big to go with this, based on how many people I have that may want to help out. I would really love to see this turn into an opportunity for a new course at the park! If you think you could get free on a Saturday afternoon (1-6 or so) to help out, post up or give me a call. Willie - 670-4508

Hey Willie, if you can get the date firmed up I may be able to help do something - 25th is Alma Greens and a possibility of the 18th being AMS "grand opening", 11th is tentative on the Greenwood UMC 3 man scramble
the 11th isn't that big of a deal for me but AMS and the Greens are :)

Another bit of excitement coming in...... I have a couple of boys talking to me from the High School EAST Lab in Farmington. They are wanting to do a Senior Year Project that involves putting a 9-hole course in at the Farmington City Park. I have gone out and layed out an initial idea, but when we get the OK to go out and seriously check it out, I would like some folks to come along and give input. It is still at least a couple weeks away, before the next board meeting, but I am excited at their chances. And what is really cool, is they want a 3 hole initila layout good for families and small kids, then they want to take the other 6 holes and do some REALLY cool stuff with them. Unusual holes like elevated on a raised flower-bed style, etc.... This is what Disc Golf needs in interest and more exposure. So be watching for our initial tourney, and be ready to come support the sport!!
