Anyone want to predict what your average rating will be after the 4 rounds at CH this weekend?

I predict my average rating for this weekend to be around 980.
Pogis
Jun 28 2007, 12:17 AM
Well for this weekend it is! I hope to shoot 1000 rated golf. Having played the courses for the first time today,, and shooting reasonable rounds, is 6 down on the coyote good? I think this is definatly possible. But as far as predictions go. I think I will shoot 981 golf! :D
6 down on the coyote is smoking hot !

Jun 28 2007, 10:30 AM
Why set your goals so low?
Pogis
Jun 28 2007, 11:03 AM
I feel confident I can shoot 6 down on both courses consistantly. My goal is to win my second tourney and beat the crap out of you! Now I know those arent loftly goals, but I will do my best! :D
cgflesner
Jun 28 2007, 11:17 AM
6 down on both would be around a 1040 average not 981. :p

Jun 28 2007, 11:18 AM
Think Brice shot an even on the back course and it was 990.
cgflesner
Jun 28 2007, 11:19 AM
Good luck.
There is a firt time for everything.
Took Brice about a year longer to finally beat me in a sanctioned event. But I wish you all the best luck. :D
i plan on shooting 1020, then 890, then 960, and finally 970. sounds like how my rounds usually are. :(
check it out , it is a start !

Minor damage to the course, there is one major tree down on
one's fairway that will dramatically change one of the best hole's on the course. From what I understand, the baseball fields are being torn down, due to the damage sustained .
with a little mulch , and some funkytown baskets, this will become a local favorite. Especially with all the shade in the park!

coldtoe, d. hall and ike played there yesterday.
one is ruined, as a tough hole. now it's a 200 ft straight shot, booooo. but the unused land out there will make for a very fun course, once the other 9 holes are in there.
surprisingly there was a game/practice going on at one of the ball fields. although the ball fields rank of moldy water. overall was a good time.

We will not have mini on this day (7/22/07), go play Arlington. Fahrenheit Fling is back and as of tradition NO Z-Boaz mini :p.
discgolfdog
Jul 16 2007, 10:13 AM
Arlington still has minis during others tournaments. We encourage everybody to play the tournaments, but not everybody has the time to play a 2 day, so we suspend the big ace pot and just shoot at the ace money from that day. If nobody hits it, we throw a ctp for it. You should still have the mini to accomodate those that can't play the fling. Just suspend the big ace pot that day. Same with Cedar Hill.
Pogis
Jul 16 2007, 10:17 AM

You should save those -6 rounds for the ZB open! As for the mini, or doubles, being canceled, it's not. Just the $2000+ ace pot is canceled. We should still be able to shoot at/throw off for the small pot that accumulates for this one Sunday. Speaking of, see you Sunday afternoon. :D

My Bad :( I lost my phone Thursday night at the mini, I will be off 7/28/07 staurday I promise . It is on the schedule for me to be off. Sorry about the confusion I really thought I was going to be off.
it is tough to get around 820 traffic, but i will try to help. i work on the west side so shooting up 820 east isn't bad till 530pm or so, but coming from the other dirrection is hopeless. if you don't mind the lights you could, (heading east on 820), exit 35 north bound and take western center till you get to denton highwayand head south,(right). when i leave it's about 515pm when i get to the traffic and it usually isn't bad enough to prompt me to exit. i tend to just stick it out and go through the 2 miles of traffic i hit.
hope this helped. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
cgflesner
Jul 16 2007, 05:59 PM
Take beach to 377, which is the first or second light north of 121. 377 then turns left straight to the course. 820 is a joke and would not recomend taking it anytime of day.

good luck to all of those funkyones heading to worlds... bring me back a little something ;)
I bring lessons learned (relearned) this year:
1. Do not play 4 rounds a day for 3 days before a tournament. (even if they are "just birdie courses") Do play the courses though. Be prepared, but don't over do it.
2. Do not form and follow a detailed game plan that makes the experience boring and non-fun. This is just ridiculous. But the engineer inside me couldn't resist for some reason. Nevertheless, a game plan is not a terrible idea, especially for new courses that you haven't played before. Just don't be overly detailed and don't force yourself to follow it. Every throw should be thrown with a new look and complete confidence. Only consult the game plan as a last resort if complete confidence is lacking. (I'm sure many of you have heard the saying: Plans are nothing; planning is everything.)
I didn't lose to anybody at worlds this year except to myself. And boy, does it hurt.
The courses were great, and I hope to post some pictures/videos later on the funky website.
I want to thank my dad for being there for me as a caddie and for support. Not having to carry the bag probably saved me many strokes after the excessive practice rounds.
Well, there are the lessons. Pretty basic ones that I thought I had already learned. Please don't repeat these mistakes funkytowners! It's just disc golf. And it's fun. There's no need to turn it into anything else. Especially at the championship level.

Funkytowners. Just a little personal opinion. I recently went to Play It Again Sports to buy a disc golf present for little Dave (quad shocks). They did not have any (no big deal) so i paid up front because i was told that they would be there in a couple of days and that i would get a call when they came in. I called once a week for 3 weeks and finally they had some in with no call. I felt like at least a "sorry man" should have been laid down ... FAT CHANCE! I also asked in the beginning if the owner would like to sponser a basket and was told that he would contact me .... again like the quad shocks FAT CHANCE! That experience has left me with a BAD taste in my mouth and a feeling that Play It Again Sposts is full of tools! Ask me if I will purchase anything in there again or turn anyone onto that place .... FAT CHANCE! Ask me if that guy has any desire to see disc golf grow in Ft Worth .... FAT CHANCE! Ask me if that guy should be included in the future growth in Ft Worth Disc Golf .... FAT CHANCE!!!!!!! Just my opinion!

This just in .
The city of Ft Worth Parks and Recreation department has
purchased 9 baskets to be installed in the community center due east of 820 on hemphill rd here in FUNKYTOWN.
This will be a Funkytown Flyers design and installation.
The primary focus will be designing a course for the children, but there will be advanced player level TEE PADS ( yes tee pads ) for all of us to enjoy.......
Sleves for Haltom City should be in next week.......
Be prepared for @ least 18 more holes in Funkytown coming to you soon!!!!!!!
BTW- the course on Hemphill will be very easy to navigate with minimal amounts of " irritant foliage " . The terrain has rolling elevation, whick will make for some fun downhill and uphill drives ....... This will be a fun park to play.
More to come !

All right! I've added the Funkytown Rating to the leaderboard (http://www.funkytownflyers.org/leaderboard.html). This new player rating uses the same round ratings the PDGA uses for their player rating. However, the end result is not quite the same because a different (better IMO :D) formula is used.
Also, the columns are now sortable by clicking the header of choice with the left mouse button.
Still working on the previous rank bug.
I reallyy like what you have done with the leaderboard mike. Do me a favor and clarify the difference between your
ratings formula and the currenty system in use by the PDGA.
Please .

Do me a favor and clarify the difference between your
ratings formula and the currenty system in use by the PDGA.
The primary difference is that averages are calculated on a per-tournament basis rather than over all rounds individually.
The secondary difference is that instead of double-weighting the most recent 25% of rounds, a curve fitting algorithm is used to generate a general direction of performance (based on the tournament averages) and is used to adjust the final rating forward as if another tournament has been played. This is the first public draft and I'm open to suggestions for improvement!
A more detailed description of the formula is at the bottom of the leaderboard webpage.

I will check the averages, but I expect the funky rating to be a bit lower than the PDGA rating because a tournament average will not be as "hot" as the tournament rounds themselves unless they are all the same. All it takes is one bad round (or a couple of not-so-great rounds) to really drag a tournament average away from the hot rounds.
Now, the formula does drop rounds that the PDGA drops. I wonder if the Funky Rating might benefit from a different scheme of dropping bad rounds. Or, maybe the trend calculation can be improved. I'll explore these ideas a bit tonight after double-checking the averaging code. Suggestions are welcome!
Oh, and thanks for the feedback! :D

While we are on the subject of stories. I was given the chance to be interviewed for an article in the TCC NE campus paper which was published in early september. I never got the link to it, or made it all the way out there to pick one up. All I have is the copy I was sent in an e-mail that was sent to me late. I was hoping the writer would quote me saying that the campus there would be an ideal place for a course. But he didnt. Oh well, hopfully this will generate some spark there. Just thought I would share it with you guys.
Imagine Tiger Woods breaking out a disc on the 18th tee instead of a driver. Now, try to
picture the world-famous golfer winning one of his many professional championships with a
single flick of the wrist instead of having to sink a 20-foot putt.
Now, you have just a little bit of insight into the burgeoning world of the sport known as
disc golf.
The spherical cousin of the universally known sport of golf, disc golf, is a niche sport
that seems to be gaining popularity daily.
" The first time I went out to play, it was because of a friend inviting me,"
former TCC student Miles Seaborn said.
Seaborn, who plays at Z Boaz in Fort Worth and Bear Creek in Grapevine, had played ball
golf before, so he knew the concept.
" Disc Golf is the exact same thing except you throw discs into baskets instead of
hitting balls into holes," he said. "All that I had to do was throw the disc.
Once I learned how to do that somewhat effectively, I was hooked."
Using baskets often supported by chains instead of holes in the ground as a means to score
on a hole are hardly where the similarities end.
Using discs similar to Frisbees, but aerodynamically designed for the different throws
needed in a typical game, the modern version of this up-and-coming sport began in the
1970s.
Disc golf courses are often found in public parks and are free, which would seem a nice
alternative if you can't afford all those pricey greens fees.
And it is also a sport that can be played by people of all ages.
" Try taking a 5-year-old to a ball golf course and saying, 'Here is a ball, now hit
it with this thing.' It's going to take a lot of practice to get them to do it well,"
Seaborn said.
" Take them to a Disc Golf course and show them how to throw a disc, and they get the
idea and are able to do it with just a few tries."
Not only is disc golf fun for the whole family, it is also a good form of exercise as most
courses wind up and down hills, through woods and around water. Most golf courses are
usually devoid of any nature if you keep the ball in the fairway.
In ball golf, a player has drivers, wedges, and putters. In disc golf, a player has many
different throws to execute, both back-handed and fore-handed to achieve the goal of
getting the disc into the basket in the fewest throws possible.
However, the challenge of adapting to disc golf after being a ball golf regular might
catch some people off guard.
Seaborn said the main difference is the course.
" Ball golf courses are generally open fairways with trees on the side and possibly
one or two in the middle," he said. "Some holes in Disc Golf seem like someone
said, 'Here is a tee box, there's the pin, now all you have to do is throw it through 200
trees, over the creek, stay on this side of the road, and you're there.'"
Seaborn claimed he was not exaggerating.
" Because a disc can be thrown in so many different ways, we need obstacles to keep
it interesting," he said.

This reminds me, wootang. I played a Z-Boaz mini about 5-6 weeks ago. I was so disgusted with my performance that I left as soon as scores were added up, and in doing so, inadvertently left my bagtag. Do you still have it? If so, can you send it over to Veterans with someone heading this way? Thanks.

Yes, I do have an extra abandon bag tag and I will be playing the course championship and I will bring it then. Unless someone comes out to the mini this Sunday that's trustworthy. :D

For any of you that cannot make what sounds like an awesome tournament in Duncan, OK, there is an Ace Race going on in Denton next weekend (the 6th) with pick your partner doubles afterwards. Here is the info!
Northlakes Discraft Ace Race
October 6, 2007
No putting, no approaching, JUST RUNNIN' AT THE CHAINS!!!
A PDGA non-sanctioned Event.
The Race Is On! Each Autumn disc golfers from around the world gather at their local courses for one purpose: to throw aces! No putting... no approaching... just runnin' at the chains. Players all throw the same model disc: a brand new and never-seen-before Discraft prototype disc that is introduced each year especially for the One Disc Ace Race. All players get one of these discs to throw and one to collect. You'll be among the first players to ever throw this new disc design.
$20.00 Entry fee pays for your Player Pack Two identical never-before-seen Discraft prototype discs plus a SuperColor mini and a Discraft hat. A $55 value!
Rules of Play: Players are required to use the player package discs and only these discs. If a disc is lost the player has the option of using the second disc from the package. Only one throw per player per hole. There will be a total of 36 holes played. The person with the most aces will win the event! For more info: http://www.discraft.com/events_acerace_07.html
I realize that Northlakes is a very large park but only about a 3rd of the park will be used and ALL holes will be UNDER 200 feet long (temp tee pads will be created).
Prize package: Grand prize for the event is a Discraft merchandise package valued at or above $300!!!!!!!
Schedule:
9:00 AM 10:00 AM Check in for Pre-registered players and open registration 10:00 AM 11:00 AM (flex start)
2nd part of the day (this is optional):
Bring your partner Doubles!!!! It s time to show us what you and your buddy have got. The start time will be determined by the group as a whole (to allow for a brief lunch). The entry fee is $10 per team and the payouts will be determined by the amount of players...but will follow normal payout standards.
The round will be 24 holes (6 of the temp holes will be used remember that these are ace/birdie holes!) There will more than likely be few CTP contests during the round.
Please note: Those of you that pay through titleDISC or get in contact with me and pay by NO LATER THAN September 22nd will be entered in a drawing and get to participate in CTP (closet to the pin) contests for various prizes!!!! This will take place after the contest.

Whats his player rating?
If it goes up anymore he is open for real. :D
Way to represent ColdToe. He has been getting some mad distance the last couple of months. Smoked the rest of funky town on the wide open ball golf course.

Chris, you didn't see the added holes. They were anything but wide open. Precision golf was required on holes 14 thru 20.

Especially hole 19, the "tunnel of terror." That hole had me reminiscing about blackhawk in Tulsa! Makes me want to play the OO this year. :D
