National Champion to be crowned at PDGA Championships

The PDGA Championships is a new PDGA Major that will be held at the International Disc Golf Center in Appling, Georgia on September 23-25,, 2011.  Only the four Open divisions are offered at the PDGA Championships – MPO and FPO for Professional players, and MA1 and FA1 (FW1) for Amateur players.

The International Disc Golf Center is a mecca for disc golfers as it has three championship courses, the Disc Golf Hall of Fame, and the “Steady” Ed Headrick Museum filled with 40 years of disc golf memorabilia.

Due to the format change at the USDGC this year, the winner of the PDGA Championships will be crowned as the 2011 National Champion, so current National Champion Will Schusterick will be in attendance to defend his title.

Invitations for pre-registration were sent last month to pre-qualified PDGA members based on their ratings or their wins at Major, NT, or SuperTour events.  As previously announced, on-line registration opened on Friday, September 2nd to all current PDGA members.  Registration will close on Wednesday, September 21st unless the event fills before that date.

Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase from Ol’ Gary’s (Home-cooked Greatness!!) who will be on-site with their freshly smoked Pulled Pork, Chicken Salad, and Egg Salad Sandwiches as well as Gourmet Hotdogs and other goodies.  Ol’ Gary’s earned their reputation for great food at modest prices at the National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships in North Augusta earlier this year.

Evening festivities that are planned at the IDGC include a free screening of Chains: The Movie on a 30 ft. screen after Friday’s round and a free BBQ player’s dinner after Saturday’s round.
So far the amateur player’s pack is chock full of tournament-branded goodies including a custom-printed Huk Lab stool, Innova Polo shirt, and at least one disc from Innova or Discraft.  Many of these items will also be available for sale in the IDGC Pro Shop for those wishing to own a branded item from the inaugural year of this new PDGA Major.

Hole sponsors will also receive an extra special gift for their support of the PDGA Championships - a First-Run “Ibex” mid-range disc from Vibram Disc Golf.  Although the Ibex will not be released to the public until mid or late October, this limited-edition of only 100 PDGA Championships Ibex Vibram discs will be available to our hole sponsors at the tournament on September 23rd.  Hole sponsorships are available for $25 each and the sponsors will also have their name/logo on a custom sponsor sign at their hole, space for their banner (if one is provided by the sponsor) to be placed at their hole, and their name listed in the official tournament program.   To sponsor a hole at the PDGA Championships, please contact the PDGA office at 706-261-6342 and ask for Andrew Sweeton or Jason Allind.

The PDGA Championships will be four rounds of 18 holes with a cut to a Final 9 on Sunday afternoon.  On Friday morning a random-draw doubles round will be played as a fundraiser for “Disc Golf for Kids Sake” and any PDGA member is welcome to participate.
