I have not posted anything about Nevada yet because I don't like to post rumors. In the CNN interview, he basically touches on what happened.

The Party came up with a list of 200 people to vote on for there 31 delegates to the National Convention. By a 2/3rd majority, the delegate to the State convention voted to add nominations from the floor. This doubled to tripled the number of nominations and the Party was not prepared for this.

From what I hear, 8 or 9 places were voted on and 7 of those were Ron Paul supporters. Then at 6pm, the convention Chair recessed the convention to be continued at a later time.

This is where the rumor mill gets crazy. There was something printed back in March saying the convention may take 2 days. Several people said the convention site was reserved for 2 days. However the Convention Chair banged his gavel and left...

About 500 people tried to get a quorum, but the McCain delegates would not join. There are a few good videos of the event. If a good video of the Speech Ron Paul gave comes out, I will post it.

It is estimated that only 40 percent of the delegates are Ron Paul supporters. So blaming the Rules change on that 40 percent when it took 66 percent to change the rules is unfair.

Also, with only asking, they were able to get the room for 3 more hours. That would have been enough time to finish up the delegate process.

Sowing More Big Government with the Farm Bill

by Ron Paul | Texas Straight Talk
June 1, 2008

Recently Congress sent the latest Farm Bill to the president. The bill features brand new federal programs, expansion of existing subsidies, more food stamps and more foreign food aid. This bill hits the taxpayer hard, while at the same time ensuring food prices will remain elevated. The president vetoed the bill, citing concerns over its costs and subsidies for the wealthy in a time of high food prices and record farm income. Nevertheless, this over-reaching, government-expanding Farm Bill will soon be law.

The truth is most farmers simply want honest pay for honest work. However, if the government is providing competing farms with advantages, and one wants to remain a farmer, one must seek a proportional advantage from government. It is a difficult position for the farmer. Some are better at qualifying for taxpayers largesse than others as evidenced by the fact that more than 60% of the subsidies go to just 10% of recipients, edging out the small family farm. This entire system is unfair and demoralizing. It disproportionately benefits big agribusiness at the expense of struggling family farms.

Third world countries also lose with these continued government manipulations. Agricultural subsidies lead to overproduction, which leads to foreign food aid as a form of dumping. By dumping government-created agricultural surpluses, agrarian economies are artificially kept in a constant state of economic depression. The would-be third world farmer cannot compete with free grain, thus he and his countrymen remain perpetual beggars rather than competitive producers. Also, by keeping food prices high, we keep more of our own citizens dependent on government food stamps, instead of paying fair market prices for food.

Free trade helps farmers and consumers much more than this convoluted system of subsidies, surpluses and central planning. Newly opened markets would create increased demand for what we produce. There is absolutely no reason we trade with China , yet not with Cuba . With energy and transportation prices as high as they are, opening up trade with a country as close as Cuba just makes sense. The recent power shift from Fidel Castro to his brother Raul, and the somewhat positive steps he has taken, provides an opportunity to lift the embargo.

Removing unreasonable, confiscatory tax policies would also make good farm policy. We need to permanently repeal the estate tax, which would again take a devastating 55% cut of family farms upon death of an owner. This tax will force the sale of many family farms, and further huge corporate agriculture.

Those who believe federal farm programs benefit independent farmers, should take note that after 70 years of this type of government intervention, small farms continue to struggle while large corporate farms control an ever-increasing share of the agricultural market. Subsidies for agribusiness should be stopped and the free market should be allowed to work. With commodity and food prices on the rise, Congress had an opportunity to scale down government controls and taxpayer funding of agriculture. Instead, despite the warning sent by an 18% approval rating, Congress stubbornly opted for more of the same.

Rising Energy Prices and the Falling Dollar

Oil prices are on the minds of many Americans as gas hits $4 a gallon, and continues to surge. How high can prices go? How can we solve these problems? What, or who, is to blame?

Part of the answer lies in understanding bubbles and monetary inflation, but especially the Federal Reserve System. The Federal Reserve is charged with controlling inflation through interest rate manipulation, however, many fail to realize that creating money, and therefore inflation, is really its only tool. When the Federal Reserve inflates the dollar as drastically as it has in the past few decades, the first users of the newly created money go in search of investments for their dollars. They must invest this money quickly and aggressively before it loses value. This causes certain sectors to expand beyond what would naturally occur in the free market. Eventually the sector overheats and the bubble bursts. Overinvestment in dotcoms eventually led to a collapse of the NASDAQ. Next we had the housing bubble, and now we are seeing the price of oil being bid up in the creation of another new bubble. Investors are now looking to commodities like oil, for stability and growth as they pull capital out of real estate. This increased demand for investment vehicles related to oil contributes to driving up the price of the actual product.

If the Fed continues with its bubble blowing policies of the past, the new commodities bubble will continue to grow, gas prices will continue to go up, as the value of your dollars go down. We will see an overinvestment in these commodities as solutions are desperately sought for a supply shortage, which is only part of the problem. Make no mistake, though, this is not the free market at work. Government manipulations have added levels of complication and unintended consequences to the marketplace.

This is not the time for members of Congress to take political potshots at each other, or to imagine that the free market is somehow to blame. This is the time to understand and fix problems. That begins with making sure the decision makers have a firm grasp on the causes of the problems and possible effects of their decisions. This is absolutely crucial if we want to get it right this time. That is why I am in the process of calling for hearings on Capitol Hill on how the falling value of the dollar affects energy prices.

Governments need to get out of the way and let the people get back to work so that we can get our economy back on stable footing. Our destructive regulatory environment, confiscatory tax policies, and managed, rather than free trade have chased many businesses overseas. The bottom line is average Americans are being seriously hurt by these flawed policies, and they are not getting good information about the true dynamics at work. The important thing now is to get the diagnosis absolutely correct so we can administer the appropriate treatment and move on to a healthier economic future. To do this it is absolutely necessary to address the subjects of central banking and fiat money.

More wisdom from Dr. Paul

Iraq or the Economy?

What is the importance of the war in Iraq relative to other current issues? This is a question I am often asked, especially as Americans continue to become increasingly aware that something is very wrong with the economy. The difficulty with the way the question is often asked relates to the perception that we are somehow able to divide such issues, or to isolate the cost of war into arbitrarily defined areas such as national security or international relations. War is an all-encompassing governmental activity. The impact of war on our ability to defend ourselves from future attack, and upon America s standing in the world, is only a mere fraction of the total overall effect that war has on our nation and the policies of its government.

The cost of this particular war is enormous, and therefore its of great importance. There is no single issue that is more important at this particular time. The war has, of course, made us less safe as a nation and damaged our credibility with allies and hostile nations alike. Moreover, years of growing deficits have been spurred on by the high price tag of war, and the decision to pay that price primarily by supplemental spending rather than traditional on-budget accounting.

War takes what would otherwise be productive economic capacity and transfers both that capacity, and the wealth it would generate in normal, peaceful, times into far less economically viable activities. It also impacts budget priorities in ways that are detrimental to our nation. I have often pointed to the fact that we are building bridges in Iraq while they are collapsing in the United States .

All war, but most particularly war funded by monetary inflation, bleeds a country in multiple ways. Obviously, many of the young people who are in the military literally give their blood, and sometimes their lives, fighting in wars of this type. Meanwhile, those who do not fight the war, but fund it, are forced to pay both the immediate costs, as well as seeing their long term purchasing power erode, as the twin pillars of debt and inflation are foisted upon the backs of current taxpayers and future generations. Neither conspiracy nor coincidence explains steep increases in the price of gas as the war drags on. No, this is simply a reality of the inflationary policies that, among other things, make this war possible.

As people are continually asked to choose whether our nations teetering economy or the failed foreign policy of the past several decades is most important as we look forward, it is well for those of us who understand that these two issues are closely linked, to continue to explain this fact to our fellow citizens. To fix the problem requires a proper diagnosis.

mmm, seems Ron Paul was trying to avoid what is happening right now in the mortgage market. FIVE YEARS AGO.

Ron Paul in the House Financial Services Committee, September 10, 2003

Mr. Chairman, thank you for holding this hearing on the Treasury Department's views regarding government sponsored enterprises (GSEs). I would also like to thank Secretaries Snow and Martinez for taking time out of their busy schedules to appear before the committee.

I hope this committee spends some time examining the special privileges provided to GSEs by the federal government. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the housing-related GSEs received $13.6 billion worth of indirect federal subsidies in fiscal year 2000 alone. Today, I will introduce the Free Housing Market Enhancement Act, which removes government subsidies from the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae), the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), and the National Home Loan Bank Board.

One of the major government privileges granted to GSEs is a line of credit with the United States Treasury. According to some estimates, the line of credit may be worth over $2 billion. This explicit promise by the Treasury to bail out GSEs in times of economic difficulty helps the GSEs attract investors who are willing to settle for lower yields than they would demand in the absence of the subsidy. Thus, the line of credit distorts the allocation of capital. More importantly, the line of credit is a promise on behalf of the government to engage in a huge unconstitutional and immoral income transfer from working Americans to holders of GSE debt.

The Free Housing Market Enhancement Act also repeals the explicit grant of legal authority given to the Federal Reserve to purchase GSE debt. GSEs are the only institutions besides the United States Treasury granted explicit statutory authority to monetize their debt through the Federal Reserve. This provision gives the GSEs a source of liquidity unavailable to their competitors.

The connection between the GSEs and the government helps isolate the GSE management from market discipline. This isolation from market discipline is the root cause of the recent reports of mismanagement occurring at Fannie and Freddie. After all, if Fannie and Freddie were not underwritten by the federal government, investors would demand Fannie and Freddie provide assurance that they follow accepted management and accounting practices.

Ironically, by transferring the risk of a widespread mortgage default, the government increases the likelihood of a painful crash in the housing market. This is because the special privileges granted to Fannie and Freddie have distorted the housing market by allowing them to attract capital they could not attract under pure market conditions. As a result, capital is diverted from its most productive use into housing. This reduces the efficacy of the entire market and thus reduces the standard of living of all Americans.

Despite the long-term damage to the economy inflicted by the government's interference in the housing market, the government's policy of diverting capital to other uses creates a short-term boom in housing. Like all artificially-created bubbles, the boom in housing prices cannot last forever. When housing prices fall, homeowners will experience difficulty as their equity is wiped out. Furthermore, the holders of the mortgage debt will also have a loss. These losses will be greater than they would have otherwise been had government policy not actively encouraged over-investment in housing.

Perhaps the Federal Reserve can stave off the day of reckoning by purchasing GSE debt and pumping liquidity into the housing market, but this cannot hold off the inevitable drop in the housing market forever. In fact, postponing the necessary, but painful market corrections will only deepen the inevitable fall. The more people invested in the market, the greater the effects across the economy when the bubble bursts.

No less an authority than Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has expressed concern that government subsidies provided to GSEs make investors underestimate the risk of investing in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Mr. Chairman, I would like to once again thank the Financial Services Committee for holding this hearing. I would also like to thank Secretaries Snow and Martinez for their presence here today. I hope today's hearing sheds light on how special privileges granted to GSEs distort the housing market and endanger American taxpayers. Congress should act to remove taxpayer support from the housing GSEs before the bubble bursts and taxpayers are once again forced to bail out investors who were misled by foolish government interference in the market. I therefore hope this committee will soon stand up for American taxpayers and investors by acting on my Free Housing Market Enhancement

Whats in a bill name?

Congressman Pauls latest Texas Straight Talk.

Recently, Congress passed the American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act, also known as the Housing Bill. Its passage was lauded by many who are legitimately concerned about foreclosures and the housing market in our countrys economy. I was asked how I could vote against a bill to help American homeowners, but I found this bill to have more to do with helping big banks than helping average Americans.

The answer is that there is more to any bill than its name or the headlines surrounding it. If one only paid attention to bill titles, one could happily vote for almost any bill put to a vote on the floor. Titles do not tell the complete story of a bills provisions, and many titles are downright deceptive and come close to emotional blackmail of legislators. But we cannot afford to be fooled by fancy titles. The housing bill could perhaps be more aptly named The Big Banking Bailout at Taxpayer Expense Act as large sections of it were written by big banking lobbyists according to Evans and Novak reporter Tim Carneys Capitol Hill sources. At least that title would be honest.

Also, many of these magnanimous sounding foreign aid bills and so-called human rights resolutions have counterproductive and hypocritical language tucked into the fine print. The recent bill on China was a good example. This resolution calls on China to hold meetings with the Dalai Lama without preconditions, when that is something our own government will not do with Iran. How our government has the authority to tell China what to do is beyond me, especially when we demand something so hypocritical. On foreign aid bills and legislation that on the surface seem very charitable, upon closer examination we find strings attached and a lot of manipulation of the marketplace. Many times, these bills purport to help the destitute, but actually help multinational corporations or prop up dictators that might otherwise be deposed by their people.

The other point to take into consideration on legislation and House resolutions is that intentions are not enough. It is not enough to want to solve a problem with legislation, and name a bill to that effect. The crafters of the legislation need to demonstrate a clear and honest understanding of the problem, in order to put forward a realistic strategy to solving it. Too many times, I just dont see that. Instead, I see more taxes, more restrictions, more violations of the Constitution, and more unintended consequences.

One shouldnt judge legislation based on titles, good intentions, or what someone says the bill will do. Imagine if all the legislation in the history of this country actually did what the title of the bills proclaimed they would do. How very different this country would be! There would be no poverty, no drugs, no crime. In fact if it was that easy, Congress by now would have probably repealed the law of gravity, and supply and demand as well, and replaced them with unlimited wealth and given all Americans the power of flight. What a fanciful world our legislators live in at times!

Though I am at times accused of being mean-spirited regarding the many bills I vote against, I dont so much think of my vote as against the legislation, as much as FOR the Constitution, according to my duties as a Congressman.

BTW, did you know that the RNC would not allow anything with Ron Paul's name on it in the convention.......... They took books, bumper stickers, slim jim's (flyers), signs and refused entry to those that word shirts.

The Oklahoma's 41 vote went 39 for McCain and 2 for Ron Paul, however, it was read off as 41 for McCain.................. FYI, those were Ron Paul delegates that were not bound like the Texas Delegates. They had a right to vote for whomever they wanted.

An email I just got

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Dear Friends,

Whenever a Great Bipartisan Consensus is announced, and a compliant media assures everyone that the wondrous actions of our wise leaders are being taken for our own good, you can know with absolute certainty that disaster is about to strike.

The events of the past week are no exception.

The bailout package that is about to be rammed down Congress' throat is not just economically foolish. It is downright sinister. It makes a mockery of our Constitution, which our leaders should never again bother pretending is still in effect. It promises the American people a never-ending nightmare of ever-greater debt liabilities they will have to shoulder. Two weeks ago, financial analyst Jim Rogers said the bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made America more communist than China! "This is welfare for the rich," he said. "This is socialism for the rich. It's bailing out the financiers, the banks, the Wall Streeters."

That describes the current bailout package to a T. And we're being told it's unavoidable.

The claim that the market caused all this is so staggeringly foolish that only politicians and the media could pretend to believe it. But that has become the conventional wisdom, with the desired result that those responsible for the credit bubble and its predictable consequences - predictable, that is, to those who understand sound, Austrian economics - are being let off the hook. The Federal Reserve System is actually positioning itself as the savior, rather than the culprit, in this mess!

The Treasury Secretary is authorized to purchase up to $700 billion in mortgage-related assets at any one time. That means $700 billion is only the very beginning of what will hit us.

Financial institutions are "designated as financial agents of the Government." This is the New Deal to end all New Deals.

Then there's this: "Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency." Translation: the Secretary can buy up whatever junk debt he wants to, burden the American people with it, and be subject to no one in the process.

There goes your country.

Even some so-called free-market economists are calling all this "sadly necessary." Sad, yes. Necessary? Don't make me laugh.

Our one-party system is complicit in yet another crime against the American people. The two major party candidates for president themselves initially indicated their strong support for bailouts of this kind - another example of the big choice we're supposedly presented with this November: yes or yes. Now, with a backlash brewing, they're not quite sure what their views are. A sad display, really.

Although the present bailout package is almost certainly not the end of the political atrocities we'll witness in connection with the crisis, time is short. Congress may vote as soon as tomorrow. With a Rasmussen poll finding support for the bailout at an anemic seven percent, some members of Congress are afraid to vote for it. Call them! Let them hear from you! Tell them you will never vote for anyone who supports this atrocity.

The issue boils down to this: do we care about freedom? Do we care about responsibility and accountability? Do we care that our government and media have been bought and paid for? Do we care that average Americans are about to be looted in order to subsidize the fattest of cats on Wall Street and in government? Do we care?

When the chips are down, will we stand up and fight, even if it means standing up against every stripe of fashionable opinion in politics and the media?

Times like these have a way of telling us what kind of a people we are, and what kind of country we shall be.

In liberty,

Ron Paul

He actually does, Have you ever read the Texas Republican Platform????

it calls for smaller government, end of the IRS, end of the Department of Education and other Departments that are not needed. The only thing he disagrees with is the language on Homosexuality and the parts on the War.

However, the new Platform we adopted in June does say that we should not invade other countries without a declaration of war.

Katrina and Rita didn't affect the majority of his district as Ike did. This one hit home.

Not saying it will happen, but there's a huge door now open for someone to challenge him. In 2 years, there will still be signs of Ike's destruction all over TX-14.

Listen to what Ron Paul says. He talks about helping the local people.

What Ron Paul's office does it help people with the federal government. He votes against the funding of programs, but as long as the program is there, he will help you take advantage of them.

This is why he does earmarks, yet votes against them every time.

Let me tell you how you can make a lot more money after the upcoming election, regardless of the winner. Cancel your internet connection and concentrate on your business and your family. You must spend 30 hours a week on the internet watching youtube and posting here. My guess is that you spend a lot of time on other sites with "like minded" posters too. Seriously, I get tired just seeing the volume of your posts.

This is the only forum I go to or post on.

In general, I don't like forums. I don't read any other part of the PDGA forum other than the MISC section anymore. Don't have the time.

I realize it seems that I am on here all the time, but I didn't even check my email yesterday until late last night.

Most of the YouTube video's are channels I subscribe to or hit my one and only key word search "Ron Paul" I usually click on a bunch and one time and have them running as I do my paperwork. If one peeks my interest, I will share it.

I also belong to several email lists, that is where most of the articles I post come from. again, if something peaks me interest, I repost it.

In all, I spend what little free time I have on the computer, but that is between making pizzas and managing my store.

Don't forget I work from 10am to midnight 7 days a week. I only get 6 to 7 hours of sleep a night.

I will continue to do this until I am either A) out of business, or B) back on top of the bills

CNN Commentary (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/11/paul.republican/index.html?iref=mpstoryview)

By Ron Paul
Special to CNN
Editor's note: Ron Paul is a Republican congressman from Texas who ran for his party's nomination for president this year. He served in Congress in the late 1970s and early 1980s and was elected again to Congress in 1996, serving continuously since then. Rep. Paul is a member of the House Financial Services Committee.

(CNN) -- The questions now being asked are: Where to go from here and who's to blame for the downfall of the Republican Party?

Too bad the concern for the future of the Republican Party had not been seriously addressed in the year 2000 when the Republicans gained control of the House, Senate, and the Presidency.

Now, in light of the election, many are asking: What is the future of the Republican Party?

But that is the wrong question. The proper question should be: Where is our country heading? There's no doubt that a large majority of Americans believe we're on the wrong track. That's why the candidate demanding "change" won the election. It mattered not that the change offered was no change at all, only a change in the engineer of a runaway train.

Once it's figured out what is fundamentally wrong with our political and economic system, solutions can be offered. If the Republican Party can grasp hold of the policy changes needed, then the party can be rebuilt.

In the rise and fall of the recent Republican reign of power these past decades, the goal of the party had grown to be only that of gaining and maintaining power -- with total sacrifice of the original Republican belief in shrinking the size of government.

Most Republicans endorsed this view in order to achieve victories at the polls. Limiting government power and size with less spending and a balanced budget as the goal used to be a "traditional" Republican value. This is what Goldwater and Reagan talked about. That is what the Contract with America stood for.

The opportunity finally came in 2000 to do something about the cancerous growth of government. This clear message led to the Republican success at the polls.

Once the Republicans were in power, though, the promises faded, and all policies were directed at maintaining or increasing power by trying to whittle away at Democratic strength by acting like big-spending Democrats.

The Republican Congress never once stood up against the Bush/Rove machine that demanded support for unconstitutional wars, attacks on civil liberties here at home, and an economic policy based on more spending, more debt, and more inflation -- while constantly preaching the flawed doctrine that deficits don't matter as long as taxes aren't raised.

But what the Republican leadership didn't realize was that ALL spending is a tax on middle-class Americans through price inflation and that eventually the inevitable consequence is paying for the extravagance with a financial crisis.

Party leaders concentrated only on political tricks in order to maintain power and neglected the limited-government principles on which they were elected. The only solution for this is for Republicans to once again reassess their core beliefs and show how the country (not the party) can be put back on the right track. The problem, though, is regaining credibility.

After eight years of perpetual (and unnecessary and unconstitutional) war, persistent and expanded attacks on our privacy, runaway deficits, and now nationalization of the financial system, Republicans are going to have a tough time regaining the confidence of the American people. But that's what must be done.

Otherwise, Republicans can only mimic Democrats and hope for an isolated victory here and there. And that's just more of the same that brought on the disintegration of the party.

Since the new alignment of political power offers no real change, we will remain on the same track without even a pretense of slowing the growth of government. With the new administration we can expect things to go from bad to worse.

Opportunity abounds for anyone who can present the case for common sense in fiscal affairs, for protection of civil liberties here at home, and avoiding the senseless foreign entanglements which have bogged us down for decades and contributed so significantly to our fiscal and budgetary crisis.

During the debates in the Republican Presidential primary, even though I am a 10-term sitting Representative Member of Congress, I was challenged more than once on my Republican credentials. The fact that I was repeatedly asked how I could be a Republican when I was talking a different language than the other candidates answers the question of how the Republican Party can slip so far so fast.

My rhetorical answer at the time was simple: Why should one be excluded from the Republican Party for believing and always voting for:

 Limited government power

 A balanced budget

 Personal liberty

 Strict adherence to the Constitution

 Sound money

A strong defense while avoiding all undeclared wars

No nation-building and no policing the world

How can a party that still pretends to be the party of limited government distance itself outright from these views and expect to maintain credibility? Since the credibility of the Republican Party has now been lost, how can it regain credibility without embracing these views, or at least showing respect for them?

I concluded my answer by simply stating the Republican Party had lost its way and must reassess its values. And that is what needs to be done in a hurry.

But it might just take a new crop of leaders to regain the credibility needed to redirect the Party. It certainly won't be done overnight. It took a long time to come out of the wilderness after 40 years of Democratic rule for the Republican Party to take charge. Today though, time moves more quickly. Opportunities will arise. The one thing for certain is that in the next four years we will not see the Republic restored. Instead the need for it will be greater than ever.

The problems are easily understood and the answers are not that difficult. Abusing the rule of law and ignoring the Constitution can be reversed. If the Republican Party can grasp hold of the needed reforms, it can lead the way and regain its credibility. If power is sought for power's sake alone, the Party will never be able to wrench away the power of the opposition.

In the past two years, I found that when the young people heard the message of liberty, they overwhelmingly responded favorably, fully realizing the failure of the status quo and the need to once again endorse a system of self reliance, personal responsibility, sound money, and a non-interventionist foreign policy while rejecting the cradle-to-grave nanny state all based on the rule of law and the Constitution.

To ignore the political struggle and only "hope for the best" is pure folly. The march toward a dictatorial powerful state is now in double time.

All those who care -- and especially those who understand the stakes involved -- have an ominous responsibility to energetically get involved in the battle of survival for a free and prosperous America.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ron Paul.

Dr. Paul's latest Texas Straight Talk:

Tragically, over the Thanksgiving holiday, the world was reminded how evil and cruel people can be. According to emerging accounts of the events in India, about a dozen well-armed and devastatingly well-trained terrorists laid siege on the city of Mumbai, killing almost two hundred people, and terrorizing thousands.

Regardless of the reasons, the indiscriminate shooting on masses of unarmed and defenseless people is chilling and reprehensible. How were these terrorists able to continue so long, relatively unchallenged, killing so many?

Indias gun laws are her business, of course. However, once the shock of these events and the initial reaction of fear passes, Americans should take away a valuable lesson about real homeland security and gun control from this tragedy.

Gun control advocates tell us that removing guns from society makes us safer. If that were the case why do the worst shootings happen in gun free zones, like schools? And while accidents do happen, aggressive, terroristic shootings like this are unheard of at gun and knife shows, or military bases. It bears repeating that an armed society truly is a polite society.

The fact is that firearm technology exists. It cannot be uninvented. As long as there is metalworking and welding capability, it matters not what gun laws are imposed upon law-abiding people. Those that wish to have guns, and disregard the law, will have guns. Gun control makes violence safer and more effective for the aggressive, whether the aggressor is a terrorist or a government.

History shows us that another tragedy of gun laws is genocide. Hitler, for example, knew well that in order to enact his final solution, disarmament was a necessary precursor. While it is not always the case that an unarmed populace WILL be killed by their government, if a government is going to kill its own people, it MUST disarm them first so they cannot fight back. Disarmament must happen at a time when overall trust in government is high, and under the guise of safety for the people, or perhaps the children. Knowing that any government, no matter how idealistically started, can become despotic, the Founding Fathers enabled the future freedom of Americans by enacting the second amendment.

In our own country, we should be ever vigilant against any attempts to disarm the people, especially in this economic downturn. I expect violent crime to rise sharply in the coming days, and as states and municipalities are even more financially strained, the police will be even less able or willing to respond to crime. In many areas, local police could become more and more absorbed with revenue generating activities, like minor traffic violations and the asset forfeiture opportunities of non-violent drug offenses. Your safety has always, ultimately been your own responsibility, but never more so than now. People have a natural right to defend themselves. Governments that take that away from their people should be highly suspect.

Dr. Paul's latest Texas Straight Talk:

The freedom to fail is an essential part of freedom. Government- provided financial security necessitates relinquishing the very essence of freedom. Last week, the big 3 American automakers came back to Capitol Hill with their hands out to the government. Congress spent this past week debating how much money to give them and what strings should be attached. Though the bailout plan for the auto industry has suffered what I would call a temporary setback in the Senate, other avenues for public funding are being explored through the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department. I am afraid the American auto industry will soon learn that having billions rain down from Washington will not be the blessing one might expect.

The government, after it subsidizes an industry, tends to become a very demanding benefactor. Politicians may not have any real idea about how to build a car, run a bank, educate a child, heal the sick or build a road, but they are quite adept at using carrots and sticks to manipulate and threaten those who do. Most of the federal control over education, roads, healthcare, and now banking and soon auto manufacturing, is done through money, mandates and conditions. The bailout proposal we were considering would force automobile manufacturers to submit their business plans for the approval of a new federal "car czar." This bureaucrat would have the authority to approve the automakers restructuring plan, monitor implementation of the plan, and even stop certain transactions he determines are inconsistent with the companies long-term viability.

One could argue that if billions of taxpayer dollars are going to flow into a failing industry, then representatives of those taxpayers have "bought" a say in how that industry is run which is precisely why bailouts are such a bad idea for both the industry and the taxpayers. The federal government has neither the competence nor the Constitutional authority to tell private companies, such as automakers, how to run their businesses. I would have thought that failed experiments with central planning and government control of business that caused so much harm in the last century would have taught my colleagues the folly of making businesses obey politicians and bureaucrats instead of heeding the wishes of consumers, employees, and stockholders. But the auto industry is in danger of learning for themselves one of the oldest lessons in politics: he who pays the fiddler calls the tune.

It is not the job of government to sustain business. The government should get out of the way, and instead examine excessive regulations, tax policy and red tape that have been hostile to manufacturing in this country. We should get back on a sustainable economic course in this country, or we are doomed to collapse, as the Soviets did, under the crushing burden of big government and a strangled economy that can no longer pay for it.

Texas Straight Talk
By Ron Paul
Government and Fraud

Billions of dollars were recently lost in the collapse of Bernie Madoffs self-described Ponzi scheme, in which too-good-to-be-true returns on investments were not really returns at all, but the funds of defrauded new investors. The pyramid scheme collapsed dramatically when too many clients called in their accounts, and not enough new victims could be found to support these withdrawals. Bernie Madoff was running a blatant fraud operation. Fraud is already illegal, and he will be facing criminal consequences, which is as it should be, and should act as an appropriate deterrent to potential future criminals. But it seems every time someone breaks the law, politicians and pundits decide we need more laws, even though lack of laws was not the problem.

The government itself runs a fraud much bigger than Madoffs. Our Social Security system is the very definition of a Ponzi, or pyramid scheme. If the government truly had an interest in protecting peoples savings, they would allow people to opt out of Social Security altogether. We would cut wasteful spending, such as our overseas empire, to honor current obligations to seniors, and eventually phase the program out. Instead, as with Enron and Sarbanes Oxley, I expect new, unrelated legislation to be proposed that further damages freedom in the name of protecting us, amidst loud proclamations that they have made the world safe.

Merely passing a law does not fix any problems, just as throwing paper at a recession does not stop it. How can a government so complicit in mandatory public fraud effectively pre-empt private fraud? I see no reason to believe that any new law, or regulatory agency will solve anything. But I do see liberty slipping away every time Congress decides to do something. We already have an oversight agency, the SEC, which did a poor job overseeing and preventing this, but does a great job hamstringing honest, productive businesses and driving them overseas.

Total trust in government solutions only creates moral hazard, and amplifies risky behavior. Trust in government got us here. We trusted government to eliminate risk, but it just made risk more creative and dangerous. We trusted the Federal Reserve, a supra-governmental cabal of private banks, to know better than the free market what interest rates should be, and how to stabilize the business cycle, but like a spinning top that loses its balance, it has instead spun the business cycle and the economy wildly out of control.

No governmental activity can negate market forces or nullify the cardinal rule of caveat emptor. Government can however, use our fears against us and promise unrealistic outcomes as a means to consolidate power and erode our liberties. Liberty comes with risk. This is a fact of life. But life without liberty is not much of a life at all.

The only way the American people will get through these difficult times is through our own resilience and ingenuity. At best, the government is irrelevant in finding prosperity again. At worst, government can present a massive obstacle for the economy to overcome. If we do not wise up and rein government back in to its Constitutional limitations, bloated government could be a cumbersome unnecessary weight the economy will continually have to support to stay afloat.

Paul: Economic crisis may be a blessing
Sat, 27 Dec 2008 11:24:04 GMT

Former US presidential candidate Ron Paul
The following is an exclusive Press TV interview with US congressman Ron Paul, a unique conservative politician who wants an end to US military presence on foreign soil, advocates US withdrawal from the UN, NATO and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and opposes the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Ron Paul, House representative of the 14th district of Texas, believes that US foreign policy must be reformed to avoid conflicts around the world.

Press TV: Dr. Paul, thank you for joining us. Let's start with foreign policy. How do you think the new administration will handle the war in Iraq?

Paul: The same way the old administration had. I don't think expect a whole lot of changes although he [US President-elect Barack Obama] had promised to bring the troops home in 16 months, now he isn't out on this because of the so-called agreement.

But I don't think he was ever serious about changing foreign policy. I think foreign policy in this country always stays the same whether the Republicans or Democrats lead it, because when you look at what George Bush ran on in the year 2000, he was strongly critical of Clinton's foreign policy of too much nation building and too much policing of the world, because the American people liked to hear that. But once they get in they do same thing.

So, I don't expect much change in Iraq. At the same time, he doesn't even pretend to have a difference of opinion on Afghanistan. So it isn't so much the individual countries, what he's going to do, as much as he overall endorses foreign interventionism.

And it is just of a matter of how fast you move and which leaders you have but essentially he picked all the leaders John McCain loves. The neocons love the foreign policy group that he has put together. So it is just a matter of time before the Democrat base that did not want him to continue the Bush-McCain policies... they are going to get pretty upset I think pretty soon.

Press TV: What do you think about the situation in Afghanistan?

Paul: More of these attacks and this week this serious mistake of the Afghani police being killed, but equally important is the attacks into Pakistan and innocent people are getting killed and everybody is pretending that it's no big deal. But it is a big deal, so it's just radicalizing the fringes.

See I don't happen to believe that the Pakistani government is stupid enough to say well lets go into India and start a war, but I believe no matter which society or which country it is, there is always one group that can get radicalized, and this is just more motivation. So the more people we end up killing, innocent people and civilians, or the pretence -- oh yeah this is just a terrorist we just killed a bunch of terrorists. Well How do they know? Did they catch them and try them?

So no, I think the whole process is very bad, and I condemn it out of our own self interest. I think it's bad for America. I think the more of this we do the more costly it is in terms of money and lives. And, the more likely it is that some day we are going to be subject to a terrorist attack here at home.

You know we're over there we're easy targets. But they are capable of coming back here too. I don't believe terrorists don't have motivations and we need to think more about where the motivations come from.

Press TV: Do expect to see more of these airstrikes inside sovereign territory, inside Pakistan?

Paul: I don't see that ending. I think Obama will do it, because I think foreign policy is controlled over and above the political parties. I don't think our political parties have that much say in the matter. So I expect those attacks are going to continue.

And, unfortunately, I think Obama's been pretty adamant about how to treat Iran. He has said that maybe we will talk to them a little bit, but he is not talking about never having a blockade on Iran and if they even look like they are going to have a weapon, we have a moral obligation to stop them.

Well, did we stop Pakistan? Did we stop India? Did we stop Israel from having a weapon? So what's the big deal? But he has been very adamant. He spoke to the foreign policy of the internationalists -- the people who direct both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.

Press TV: It's been a year since the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) dismissed the claims that Iran is producing a nuclear weapon. Yet we are seeing a lot of war-talk here in Washington. Why do you think that is?

Paul: Well, I think there are a lot of reasons. I think oil is an important reason. I think the neocon mentality of we're good people and we going to impose our goodness on people. I think Israel has to do something with it.

And I think some people honestly say, you know they get convinced, they say 'Iranians are bad people they might bomb us'. So for these various reasons they all come together. Same reasons they went together to go after the Iraqis. So it's a lot of misinformation, emotional reactions. But, unfortunately, if you're talking generalities, the American people don't want this.

In a way the candidate who argues more for peace wins. So, Obama was sort of the peace candidate. He wanted less intervention. But it didn't matter anyway.

But when it comes to dealing with policy, I think that our policies are locked in place. The saving grace may be that our bankruptcy in this country will make it very difficult for us to afford it just like the Soviets had to leave Afghanistan because they ran out of money and there system failed. Our system could fail and it might be a blessing in disguise.

Press TV: Do you think with the incoming administration we will see a difference in policies toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Do you think Hamas could be part of the solution.

Paul: I don't expect any significant changes there. I think he's not going to be more sympathetic toward the Palestinians. He may pay lip service to it, but if it's something that Israel doesn't endorse, it's not going to happen.

Press TV: Lets move to the economy. Why have you introduced this bill to end the Federal Reserve.

Paul: Because the Federal Reserve is a central bank that under our constitution is illegal, there is no authority for it, and it is of no value to us. It does nothing but harm because it has the power to create money out of thin air. We have legalized counterfeiting.

Congressman Ron Paul (R) speaks to Press TV's Jihan Hafiz.
Why an individual like myself that cherishes personal liberty is so opposed is that it allows governments to grow because they don't have to be responsible. If you were in a free society with sound money, you would have to appropriate money, tax the people, spend the money and know exactly what was going on. But, if a secret bank can just create money out of thin air then they [the government] can circumvent the people and circumvent the Congress, and they can go fight wars and not be responsible.

See, if we tax the American people for all that we do overseas, it would end in weeks, because we don't have the money, but if you inflate the currency you can delay the payment you worry about high prices down the road. And we have been sort of lucky to have the reserve currency of the world and we haven't suffered from the inflation.

So it just enhances big government and besides its illegal and morally its wrong. It's wrong to allow an individual to counterfeit money. Why do we allow a secret bank to counterfeit money. There are many reasons why we shouldn't have a central bank and why it's so damaging.

Early parts of a cycle where the government inflates a currency, there are some benefits because it look likes you're real wealthy but its only temporary. Now, what we are seeing the market catching up and saying that this was not such a good idea. It was a bubble.

And the bubbles that the Federal Reserve created are now coming apart and the ultimate bubble to come unglued or come apart will be dollar bubble. And we are now billing everybody to the point of trillions of dollars which means that the dollar won't be able to withstand this and eventually the world will reject the dollar -- which for us here means higher interest rates and higher prices and a country that's going to be a lot poorer.

Press TV: Why are you always referred to as the true constitutionalist?

Paul: Because I do, I follow the constitution. And it is an old-fashioned idea that you believe in it literally. Our Article 1, Section A lists what we can do, and it also says by our ninth and tenth amendment that if it's not authorized, you are not allowed to do it. So all governments should be local, and yet we have drifted away from that for the last 100 years and I just thought that it was a pretty good idea.

The founders had a pretty good idea about the constitution, to make the government very local and divide it and only have a few things bring us together as a country such as sound money and free trade.

So, I think it was a great idea. It's the oath that we all take and everybody else ignores it. I didn't think that very many people in this country cared. But to my surprise in the presidential campaign we discovered a lot. They said hey that sounds like a good idea I am so glad; I have been waiting for somebody to say something like that. So it's been very encouraging.

Transition and Hope

As another year draws to a close, there are some important transitions ahead of us. Not just transitions to a new administration, but also economically, politically and culturally.

Many hoped that the changes would signify overwhelming positive steps for our country, and that we would enter a new era, as promised during the campaign. I would like for this to be true, but based on the continuity so far, I would not be surprised to see America stay on the same course of failed monetary and economic policies. The course has been set for several decades, and in reality there is little the new administration could do to fix things without actually making them worse. But I expect them to try. The only real solutions involve allowing the market to liquidate the debt and malinvestment. The political reality is that this is not going to happen.

Through the coming months and years, our nation will find itself at many crossroads, as all manner of socialist, corporatist, protectionist and nationalist initiatives will be thrown at the economy to see if anything will reflate it. Some of these so-called fixes will be enacted amidst much outcry, as with the $700 billion TARP bailout, which the public was right to oppose. About half of that money is gone without a trace, with no accountability, and the economy is no better off for it. Others, such as the proposed new $800 billion plus economic stimulus the new administration is already clamoring for, might have limited public support, as many will find the prospect of receiving a government check a little too tempting to object to. After all, Wall Street got a bailout. What about the little guy? Everything will be attempted by government in the short run to remedy the worsening situation everything, that is, but freedom. Therefore everything attempted will fail. Unfortunately, government will continue to consolidate and abuse power at an accelerated pace. Government will get bigger, in the short term, and as monetary policy goes from irresponsible to absurd, I have every expectation that we will soon shift from some prices falling to an inflationary nightmare.

But there is hope. As all these attempts fail, more people will demand freedom, and see that it is the only way. Government can only get so big before the country goes broke.

It is regrettable that we keep forgetting what history has shown over and over to be true, because truly, it is a hard and destructive lesson to keep learning. Perhaps it is just something that every generation has to learn for itself. The political and cultural changes that come from these economic transitions will be key to the direction and quality of life for future generations. But I am hopeful because of the strength of the American people and the increased number of voices recognizing that liberty really is the only way to peace and prosperity.

I don't think it was "preemptive" as Ron Paul says. There has been militant groups shooting rockets over at Israel for a long time.

I agree with most everything he says.

I've been beating you like a rented mule lately, I don't mean to do that here, I'm just asking you to help me understand this. I agree with 99% of this clip, but just how does Ron Paul think we can lower a $100,000 house down to $20,000? Even if that happened, wouldn't the homebuilder be the one loosing $80,000? Isn't the homebuilder the "little guy" too? His point was to give the "little guy" a break, so what am I missing here?

Pizza God
Jan 23 2009, 04:47 PM
You are taking a too literal interpretation of what Ron Paul is saying.

The housing bubble bursting means more people will be able to afford homes in general.

Sure, some people purchased homes and have loans for more than the current cost of there home.

But for those that Rent, now may be the time to become home Owners instead of home renters.

I have a friend who works for BofA (formally with Country Wide) He handle bankruptcy mortgage claims in Florida. I asked him just a few weeks ago how much the market had dropped. He told me an average $250K home is selling for like $80K to $90K. That is a pretty big drop and that opens up the market to a bunch of people who could not afford it before.

For those of us who live "smart" we can capitalize on the economic downturn or bursting bubbles. If you had money in cash, now is the time to buy some stocks, for long term investments. (specially if you had your money in CD's)

What he was talking about the prices have dropped or DEflation helps the people on limited income (like me)

Inflation eats away at income because rarely do raises keep up with inflation. Specially if we have run away inflation like the 70's or the last few years on food and energy.

Texas Straight Talk by Ron Paul

I have recently had several opportunities on various news programs to discuss the economy and what is wrong with the so-called economic stimulus package. I have said over and over what we shouldn't be doing, and now I'd like to explain what we should be doing.

But to improve the situation, you must first have a solid grasp of how we got here. Government policies and central planning created the housing bubble, now going bust. About a decade ago the government made expanded homeownership and affordable housing a public goal. Through Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the secondary mortgage market the government incentivized creative, low down-payment, more widely available mortgage products, and discouraged the market-proven lending standards of the past. The Federal Reserve kept interest rates artificially low, which added more fuel to this fire. Many related sectors temporarily flourished because of this, and many people got into homes they otherwise could not have afforded. The increased demand for housing sent prices soaring until in many markets housing became even more unaffordable, necessitating even more creative mortgages, and impossibly leveraging homeowners. Many risky investment vehicles such as mortgage-backed securities, derivatives, credit default swaps grew out of this unsustainable situation. As the foreclosures began, the house of cards started to tumble. Too many people have confused the symptoms and the pain of the bust with the problematic policies that caused the bubble, which is really what needs to be treated.

First of all, just as the best cure for a hangover is not to drink so much, the best cure for a recession is a recession. It is time to sober up and return to free market sanity, risk and reward, supply and demand, without political intervention. Politicians are good at catering to the needs of special interests, but very bad at determining what needs to take place in the market. Government should stick to punishing fraud and enforcing contracts. When they use the tax code, bureaucratic departments and their manipulative rules and regulations to dictate social and economic behavior, we end up with distortions and malinvestments. Bailing out banks, continuing failed Fed policies and strapping the taxpayer with toxic debt will worsen the pain, and punish the innocent.

If Congress really wanted to do something helpful, it would cut taxes. Ideally, we would repeal the income tax altogether and get the IRS off the economy's back, which would be a huge boon. We should also cut spending. Cut every unconstitutional department and program, every wasteful governmental encroachment on the people's liberty and money, starting with our massive overseas empire. The cost of our empire is bringing us to our knees, just as the Soviets' empire did to them. Congress should also abolish the Federal Reserve and take back its responsibilities to ensure sound money, safe from the manipulations of powerful banking interests.

These things would constitute real change, real economic stimulus. The plans being bandied about Washington are just more of the same. As long as no one seriously considers the cure, we are unfortunately destined to prolong the disease.

This is a pretty good speech. I really wish he would write his speeches down. FYI, when Ron Paul does a speech like this, he just gets up there and starts talking. That is why he sometimes rambles, or forget where he is going with his point.

But when you watch him enough, you know what he is saying and means.

In this case, this is a GREAT speech for the most part.

What people don't seem to understand is that an earmark takes some of the money in the appropriations bill and says that it has to be spent on that project.

So we give $1M to the transportation department, and attached to that bill is $100K for a bridge in Dallas to be repaired.

That means the Transportation department gets $1M, then $100K of that is spent on the bridge leaving $900K for them to spend as they please....

In other words, they "could" choose to fix that bridge, or they could have spent that money on whatever they wanted.

He really likes to ramble, doesn't he.

Regarding the Soviet Union, Ron Paul says in the above video "they had thousands and thousands of nuclear weapons, but we didn't have to confront them" ... Is he joking or just delusional?

Pizza God
Apr 06 2009, 05:17 PM
Yes he does.

He also tends to talk in codes. When I say codes, I mean he talks like you know what he is talking about, if you don't already know what he is talking about, it can be confusing.

I felt that was one of his problems in the campaign. He does not have "prepared speeches" He just gets up there and talks about what ever is on his mind at the moment. In some of his speeches he would talk about things twice. :o

But for the most part, he just rambles on and on about things.

Some of his best speeches are on the house floor where he actually does read from something he wrote.

He does know what he is talking about, he just does not always communicate it very well.

But then that is Dr. Paul. A true Statesman.

Young Americans for Liberty hosted Dr. Paul at Wake Forrest University last night, and by every account, the event was tremendous. The paper reports 800 attendees, but the University reported over 1,200, and told us that the crowd to see Dr. Paul was bigger than when Vice President Biden recently visited the campus.

MMM, a little congressman from Texas gets a bigger crowd that the Current Vice President??? :D

Radio interview with Alex Jones 4/24/09

Ok, I am posting this for 2 reasons:

1st, it is mostly a good interview with some good information

2nd, I want you to notice Ron Paul answer/non answers to a few key "Conspiracy" questions.

Ron Paul is very polite and will not contradict Alex Jones, he chooses not to say anything as if he does not agree with AJ.

Where Ill be very careful, where Id like to be just very clear, theres been some discussion of the GAO auditing monetary policy. I dont know what that means, but I certainly would resist any attempt to dictate the Federal Reserve (http://www.ronpaul.com/on-the-issues/fiat-money-inflation-federal-reserve/) how to make monetary policy. Its the independence of monetary policy which is crucial to the maintenance of price stability and economic growth in this country. And that would not be acceptable but if its an issue of making sure that were appropriately managing our systems and doing what were saying were doing in terms of our lending, we want to be open, we want you to understand that were taking every precaution to protect the taxpayer.

maybe if more in Congress thought like Dr. Paul, we would not be in this big mess we are in right now.

What I like most about Libertarians is that they live in the same world that the D&D people do. D&Ders are convinced that if they could go back and live in middle ages, that everything would be just awesome. Problem is that the character they want to be in the middle ages is a Lord or higher. They never think about being a peasant. They don't think about the dysentery, no toilets, dying from the common cold, being forced to fight for a lord against guys in armor, and having the big guy and his friends make friendly with your wife, daughter or self whenever they felt like it.

Libertarians are the same, they forget that we essentially had a libertarian society until about 1910. We had TB, polio, and other now cured diseases. People, children included, worked 6 or 7 days out of the week in sweat shops for almost nothing with no health care. On average, no one had teeth by the time they were 50, and anyone could sell you anything and tell you it was medicine or food, no matter how poisoned it was.

Even better, the Libertarians ignore the fact that we've been going down the libertarian path for the last 30 years, steadily dismantling the non-libertarian structures that protect us from the greed and malfeasance of our neighbors. Lets take one example, the FDA. The FDA, which tests and regulates foods and drugs, has had it's budget cut so severely that it can no longer properly test the foods and drugs we eat and take. All too often, in that grand partnership with business that the Libertarians like so much, they rely on the drug companies to test their own products. This is how we ended up with anti-inflammatory drugs like Celebrex that cured pain while causing heart failure at high frequencies. When the drug companies saw this result in their testing, they simply removed the result from their findings and sent the "good" data to the FDA, who legalized the drugs for distribution. This is not the exception, it is now the rule.

Like the communists before them, Libertarians believe in a human being that doesn't exist. The communists ignored greed, thinking people would work for the greater good, the Libertarians ignore greed thinking people will work for the greater good also. Each has in view a different set of goals, but each makes the same exact mistake. How very silly of them.

Ron Paul is a smart honest guy, but the last thing we need in this country is more Libertarianisms. Instead, it is time to start protecting ourselves from the greed of our companies and politicians with good old fashioned regulations.

You forget that government can't run anything. That is the problem with the FDA and others. If it was done by the private sector and companies wanted to be FDA approved, they could use that stamp on there food (or Drugs) and people would buy them because of the FDA's reputation. If the FDA did not do there job, the label would become worthless and something would take it's place.

Now that is the Libertarian ideal. You pointed out one of the problems with government running stuff like this.

I point out the EPA, they regulate the output of pollution a factory can produce. However, they set a standard which means they allow those companies to legally pollute to a point. If you happen to be the factories neighbor, you have no recourse as long as the company is within the EPA's standards. (not to mention the US government is the worst polluters in the US and we have no recourse)

In a true Libertarian society, the neighbor would sue because of even a trace amount of pollution, the company would be sued for cleanup and have to solve there problem or shut down the factory. Of course neither system is perfect.

I do prefer a free market approach to things, which are libertarian in nature, but I no longer consider myself a hard core Libertarian.

You're too funny Za. A private FDA? So, this private FDA gets set up, and Glaxo pays them to cheat on their drug, something which has happened in numerous cases already, take the tobacco research for example, and by the time the public finds out that the private FDA lied to them because Glaxo bought them, 300,000,000 doses have been sold and 1,000 people have died due to side effects. So, people go to the next private FDA which has the same financial motivations to cheat etc. In the mean time, the families of the 1,000 dead folks sue Glaxo, a few win, but most lose because Glaxo made nice donations to the electoral campaigns of the judges sitting the case, indirectly of course, and on the cases they lose (that is Glaxo loses), the penalty, restricted by law, is about 5,000,000. BTW - Glaxo made about 5,000,000,000 on the product. What motivation does Glaxo have to stop it's behavior? None. BTW - this pretty much mirrors what happened with the anti-inflammatory drugs.

Again, you're living in a dream world Zeo. A D&D world where everyone plays on an even field, despite the fact that it is clear we do not.

The EPA worked really well for 50 years. They cleaned up a lot of toxic sites, or food and drugs didn't poison us, it was a shining star of how government can work for you. Then Reagan got elected. You want the EPA to look bad, and it has, but only after Reagan and subsequent Republican Congresses and Presidents gutted it.

Please see above. In most of these law suits, it isn't the neighbors who win, it is the powerful businesses that do. Even when they do lose, the amounts they pay are not prohibitive. Look up asbestos, coal, even cigarettes, one of the few almost wins for the public in court. All those tobacco companies are still there, still profitable, still lying.

I do prefer a free market approach to things, which are libertarian in nature, but I no longer consider myself a hard core Libertarian.

Za, we live in a capitalist society. Money buys everything. Education, political influence, health, societal position. If you have it, you are pretty much immune to the law (not completely, but largely). Because of that, the Libertarian ideal doesn't work. Like communism, it's a great idea, like communism, it's flawed because it envisions a human being that doesn't exist.

The notion that the government doesn't run anything well ignores the things they do well, some of which I don't like. It ignores the military, the FBI, the CIA, medicare, social security, the national parks system, the BLM, the VA, the IRS, and on and on and on. People may not like some of these things, but they all run well, and very cost effectively relative to similar Free Market business functions.

I am not arguing that these things are all perfect, simply that they are good, were better before Reagan et al, and are better than anything in private that I've seen.

We've allowed the conservative agenda to control our view on these issues to our own detriment.

Compare the cost of Blackwater, or Xe as they're now called to our military. Cost, efficacy, law observance. No matter how you slice it, the private sector isn't nearly as good.

Well the Constitution says the Federal Government should run the Military.

The CIA should be moved back into the Military and I have one thing to say about how well they are run. 9/11 and special mention of WMD's in Iraq.

Medicare and Social Security, both socialist programs that are going to be broke in a few short years. (actually Medicare already is)

IRS assumes you are guilty until proven innocent. They are just a collection agency backed up by a gun.

I could go on and on about problems with every example and why and where it should be handled by the government.

Libertarianism is not anarchy (like a guy who I have been arguing with on YouTube seems to think)

I am wanting to concentrate on what is going on right now and stop looking at past mistakes (other than to learn from them)

Nothing you've said here disproves my point, it only proves that you don't like some of these institutions. BTW - the guy on you-tube is right. Libertarianism is a form of anarchy. Take away the rules is the basic motto, and the reason is that the open market will control the situation better. That conclusion despite the 100s of years of evidence that an open market clearly doesn't work.

SS has been used to prop up the rest of our deficit spending Za, it won't have any problems until 2040 or so. Even then, a small adjustment fixes the problem. You've been watching to much conservative propaganda. As for Medicare, well of course it's broke. We aren't paying for it.

Currently, our medical system is ranked something like 34th in the world. It costs more than any other, 16% of GDP, and yet only covers 2/3rds of our population. 45 million are uninsured. Tiawan's social system, the envy of the world, is 6% of GDP, is highly effective and efficient, covers everyone, and is adapted from our medicare system. Hmmmmm.

Once again, if you don't know the facts, it's not O.K. to make them up. Only Rush, Bill and Hannity are allowed to do that.

My favorite part is where he talks about how we once subsidized tobacco growing, now we are going to try to stop people from smoking it.
