It's DeLa Time...

3rd National Tour Stop Set to Begin in Santa Cruz, California

Thursday, May 18, 2017 - 14:58

Each year, the Masters Cup in Santa Cruz, California provides disc golfers fortunate enough to be involved one of their happiest moments of the year. The initial drive up the winding road that leads to both DeLaveaga Golf Course and DeLaveaga DGC evokes a true sense of awe and elation. For those that make the trek for the first time, it’s difficult to even accept the reality that somehow you’re about to play disc golf here.

But, it is real, and it’s the best time of year to be here. DeLaveaga is one of the most beautiful disc golf courses in the world and is simultaneously one of the most difficult and the 2017 Masters Cup presented by Innova Champion Discs is going to be filled to the brim with the world’s most talented disc golfers all weekend.

Everyone Gets DeLa’d

The 2016 Masters Cup saw the addition of a second course to the competition; the temporary championship layout set up on the DeLaveaga golf course that serves as a more gallery-friendly piece of land for the final round, one that played host to perhaps the most exciting putt in all of 2016, when Ricky Wysocki' nailed an 80-footer on the 18th green to edge out Paul McBeth.

Wysocki's winning putt on the 18th hole of the 2016 Masters Cup.

Albeit incredibly beautiful, the golf course layout is much more forgiving than DeLaveaga DGC. The first two rounds played on DeLaveaga DGC, are the ones that will make or break the competitors.

Regardless of how well you know the course and/or how well you play the course, getting “DeLa’d” is virtually guaranteed to happen at least once, if not more than once. There are many ways the term can be defined, but it roughly translates to an undeserved, treacherous result after a perfect throw or putt. Ending up off the fairway at DeLa is often far beyond what the term “rough” was meant to describe. A bad kick off a tree or a skip off of an exposed root can mean rolling 60 feet down into a steep, poison oak-filled ravine with little to no opportunity to get out clean.

It’s because of this that DeLa is always and will always be one of the few disc golf courses where finishing with a score of even par typically translates into a 1000-rated round, give or take a few.

Coverage

DeLa and the Masters Cup brings to the table everything that a disc golfer could ask for as a competitor, but for those fans simply wanting to watch and follow along from home, DeLa is missing one key variable; cellular signal. With many parts of the course in a dead zone, the live coverage we’ve all come to know, love, and even expect simply isn’t possible.

Fortunately, there is at least enough signal available for live scoring as well as updates on Twitter and Instagram with pictures and videos when possible. The best way to keep up with the action live as it happens will be by following along on pdgalive.com.

Additionally, The SpinTV will be on site working diligently to bring you the best possible post-production coverage videos. While we wait for the much-anticipated opening round, familiarize yourself with the course and the competition via all of the materials available on the official Masters Cup website.
