Uplay Disc Golf, a transformative educational organization, has partnered with the Paul McBeth Foundation and the PDGA to continue the growth of disc golf and help build sustainable habits for new disc golf communities in Uganda, Kenya, and Zimbabwe.

Excitement and interest in disc golf has been building across the region. In 2002 Kevin Becker, via the support of the Paul McBeth Foundation and the PDGA, installed a disc golf course on the Rimpa Estates Wildlife Conservatory – Maasai lands owned by Kevin's wife's family. Kevin also obtained a Uplay curriculum book from Brian Hoeniger, PDGA International Program Coordinator, to help with Kevin's educational classes at the wildlife estates. Kevin's passion in growing the local disc golf community resulted in an opportunity for Uplay staff members, board members and volunteers to visit Kenya – as well as Uganda and Zimbabwe. The adventure begins in late October, 2023 with a simple, yet profound mission: to introduce disc golf to children, adults, teachers, and professionals in Uganda, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. Through this introduction, they aim to bring about a positive change in these communities, fostering joy, peace, and a sense of togetherness.

A course on the Rimpa Estates Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, designed by Paul McBeth Foundation volunteers, and funded by that foundation as well as the PDGA, utilizes homemade baskets created by Kevin Becker, the passionate local force behind the project. PDGA International Program Director Brian Hoeniger calls the (PDGA-conforming) baskets the "best homemade baskets I've ever seen."

The Uplay Team

Zoe AnDyke – Uplay Founder/Director: A visionary leader with a deep love for disc golf and a commitment to making a positive impact on communities, Zoe is the driving force behind the logistical aspects of the trip, coordinating the clinics to be taught, and also the field events that will pair nicely with the PDGA tournaments.

Dustin Keegan – Operations Manager and Lead Ambassador: Co-leading with Zoe, Dustin will not only handle logistics and communications for the group, he will also co-lead the various teaching initiatives that are scheduled. Dustin will also direct several PDGA-sanctioned events in Uganda and Kenya.

Sarah Henderson & Kim Johnson – Board Members: Bringing their expertise and dedication to the cause, these board members play a crucial role in shaping Uplay Disc Golf's future, and will play an integral part in documenting the trip and running the various events.

Raven Klein, Alex Mier, Chandler Fry, and James Koizumi – Uplay Volunteers: These professional players and super volunteers are the backbone of the initiative, providing invaluable expertise and enthusiasm, along with media capture and documentation.

The Uganda Experience: Nine Days of Disc Golf Magic

Uganda, a land of stunning landscapes and warm-hearted people, will be the first stop on Uplay Disc Golf's African adventure. Over the course of nine days, the team will host a series of clinics for students of all ages, including teachers and university professors, teaching the basics of disc golf and organizing fun-filled events throughout the week. These clinics will not only introduce a new sport but will build upon the established skills of an eager community to play, expand, teach, and grow. Team Uplay will be hosting the first-ever sanctioned PDGA tournament and field games day in the country.

Kenya's Turn: Eight Days of Fun and Learning

Kenya, known for its diverse culture and vibrant communities, will be the next destination. With the help of Kevin Becker, local contact and disc golf pioneer in Kenya, Uplay Disc Golf plans to conduct eight days of intensive disc golf training, including up to six schools and multiple community clinics. Kevin has built a course on his property and has been teaching with the Uplay Basics curriculum for over a year. His commitment to the growth of the game in his community created the perfect opportunity for the Uplay team to visit in person, boost his programs and show him how to take his education to the next level. Team Uplay will round out the trip by hosting a sanctioned PDGA tournament and field games day for all to enjoy.

Zimbabwe's First Encounter: Expanding the Reach

While Uganda and Kenya will be the primary focus, Uplay Disc Golf's impact won't stop there. Canadian super volunteer James Koizumi will carry the spirit of disc golf to Zimbabwe for the very first time. He will provide the necessary equipment, including discs and baskets, and introduce the Uplay curriculum to kickstart this exciting journey. James will also work with community leaders on how to take steps toward getting a disc golf course approved and installed.

The Ripple Effect: Spreading Joy and Peace Through – and Beyond – the Game

Disc golf is not just a game; it's a vehicle for positive change. As Uplay Disc Golf reaches out to communities in Uganda, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, it's not only about teaching them to throw discs accurately. It's about fostering a sense of belonging, encouraging physical activity, and instilling the values of discipline and determination. The ripple effect of this initiative will extend far beyond the disc golf course. In a world often divided by boundaries and differences, the simple act of throwing discs with others can sow the seeds of joy and peace in the hearts of many. The team's journey to Africa is not just about teaching a game; it's about creating lasting bonds, spreading smiles, and leaving behind a legacy of positivity.

Uplay Disc Golf, in partnership with the Paul McBeth Foundation and the PDGA, is not just sending eight people to Africa; they are sending a message of hope. They are sending the promise of a brighter future, one throw at a time.
