2023 PDGA Masters World Championships — Day 4 Recap

Sunday, July 16, 2023 - 21:20

It was easy to see this ending coming.

A week full of strong competition came to an end in thrilling fashion on Saturday in Flagstaff, Arizona at the 2023 PDGA Masters Disc Golf World Championships.

There were close finishes all throughout the 25-division field, including five — yes, FIVE — PDGA World Championships that were decided by a playoff.

Titles were defended and new champions broke through this week in northern Arizona.

Here’s a look at the 2023 PDGA Masters Worlds:

  • Joe Rovere tied things up in MP40 head into Championship Saturday with Cale Leiviska. The Colorado native pulled ahead by two after the semifinals and closed out a tight battle with a one-stroke win to claim his second-straight MP40 World Championship. Matthew Blakely made a quiet push over the final two days for a podium finish.

Chris Smith

  • Chris Smith held off the entire field every step of the way this week to claim the MP50 championship. Smith led by one after the first round, extended his lead to four after the second and it was a one-stroke lead heading into Championship Saturday. Smith extended the lead to two after the semifinals and took down the wire-to-wire win by four strokes over Brian Schweberger. Ron Convers finished third.
  • Juliana Korver added to her list of PDGA World Championships with a dominant win. Her seventh overall title comes 20 years after her fifth FPO title, which she won in Flagstaff. Kim Giannola finished second and Nova Politte third.

Hank Kirwan

  • The first playoff came in MP55. Patrick Brown used a stellar semifinal round to take a one-stroke lead over Hank Kirwan heading into the Final 9. Kirwan birdied the final hole to push a playoff and then connected on an uphill circle 2 putt, which would be the winner and give Colorado its second Masters World title of the day.
  • In FP55, Kelly Jenkins pulled away in the fourth round and rolled to a nine-stroke win over Karen Sattler.
  • It was a masterclass week from Tim Keith, who rolled to a 13-stroke win for his third-straight MP60 World title. Keith averaged 994 for the week. Doug Williams finished second.

Juliana Korver

  • FP60 included a four-way tie early, a six-stroke lead from Pam Reineke, a massive semifinal comeback from Peggy Berry before Reineke sealed her fourth World title and ninth Major.
  • Jay Gobrecht went wire-to-wire, slowing building his lead to the final seven strokes for the MP65 title. J. Gary Dropcho finished second.
  • After several close finishes, Randy Beers broke through for the MP70 title, a race that was close heading into Saturday. David Greenwell tied things up heading into Championship Saturday but Beers took a two-stroke lead to the winner's circle.
  • On Friday, Carlos Rigby took down his third World title in MP80.
  • Sean D'Armi and Dan Vassar battled throughout the week. Vassar took the lead in Round 3 before D'Armi closed the gap on Friday. Vassar went off in the semifinal round but, again, D'armi surged to force a playoff and won it on the first hole.
