After an exciting finish at the Dynamic Discs Open just last weekend, the pros are jumping right back into the action at the 2023 DGPT — TruBank Des Moines Challenge Presented by Discraft in Des Moines, Iowa.

This marks the 33rd year of the event and its third year as a Disc Golf Pro Tour Elite Series Event. It's also the second of three-straight stops on the Elite Series.

All three rounds of the 2023 DMC will be held at Pickard Park, originally designed by five-time PDGA World Champion Julianna Korver. The Pickard Park DGPT Elite Layout is an 8,405-foot par 64 for the FPO field and a 9,752-foot par 64 for the MPO field.

Pickard Park features a mix of different hole types and shot shapes, demanding well-rounded game play to stay on top in this season’s competitive field. Long par 5s like holes 10 and 18 require distance to get a look at the birdie while still demanding accuracy to stay in bounds. Players have to shift gears for technical wooded holes such as hole 12, which is only 260 feet but features a double Mando off the tee. Pickard Park also features water carries on holes 4 and 5, with hole 5’s island green tempting players into ace runs.

Kristin Tattar started the 2022 DMC with a 9-under hot round and never let go of the lead for the rest of the weekend, finishing with a four-stroke lead over the FPO field. This was Tattar’s third Elite Series win of the season, which also continued her streak of never placing lower than third in the 2022 season up to that point.

The MPO field saw a tighter finish at the 2022 DMC when both Simon Lizotte and Robert Burridge made birdie putts on the final hole to tie at 27 strokes under par and force a playoff. While Lizotte had plenty of experience on tour, having already won two Elite Series events in 2022, Burridge had only recently gone pro after winning the 2021 PDGA United States Amateur Disc Golf Championship.

After matching strokes through the first three holes — including Burridge’s 60-foot birdie putt on hole 3 — it would all be decided on hole 4. Burridge’s drive cleared the 472-foot water carry but skipped off of a stump while Lizotte went long and landed outside the circle. Burridge was staring down a death putt blocked off by a tree and had no choice but to lay up and hope for Lizotte to miss. Lizotte made one last circle 2 putt to win the tournament, birdieing eight of the last nine holes to earn his win.

Other than a chance of rain on Saturday, the weather looks sunny and hot for the 2023 TruBank Des Moines Challenge.
