PDGA Euro Tour #3 - Kokkedal Open
Trials, chases, and triumph.
In the end, Josef Berg took down the victory from a relentlessly charging KJ Nybo, who proved once again why he is a fan favorite, a gritty competitor, and someone you can never count out. The pair stole the show on the final day in Kokkedal, Denmark.
Nybo, playing through an injury sustained on Thursday before the event, started off in a bit of a slump on Friday, shooting nearly 40 points below his rating and sitting tied for 28th place. However, his 1033-rated final round effort kept the field on their toes as the tournament neared its conclusion. Meanwhile, Berg stayed at the top of the MPO standings all week, finishing each round with at least a share of the lead.
With around nine holes left to go, five players were tied for the lead.
With one hole to go, Berg parked hole 18’s pin to force a playoff with Nybo. The pair moved over to their first playoff hole, where Berg sealed the victory with a 10-meter putt to close out the tournament.
In FPO, Anniken Steen earned her first PDGA Euro Tour victory of 2022. Going into the final round, Steen had a single-throw lead over Laura Posch (who shot the hot round the day before), Antonia Faber and Lykke Lorentzen. Shooting the hot round on the final day rocketed Steen to a comfortable victory in the division.
Masters Divisions
MP40 belonged to Jan Baess. Baess stayed in the driver’s seat throughout the tournament, completing the wire-to-wire victory, throwing two hot rounds in his division. Jörg Eberts from Greifswald, Germany, and Odne Lyngstad form Sandefjord, Norway completed the MP40 podium.
In FP40, Lydie Hellgren put together the ideal round to cap off her tournament; her 939-rated final round came in at 50 points above her player rating. That finishing effort was good enough to propel the Norwegian past Pia Andersson to secure the victory.
Christer Christiansson from Västra Frölunda, Sweden defined the “never give up” mentality on the weekend. At the start of round three, Christiansson was in fifth place and four throws behind the leader in MP50. However, a 1023-rated seven-under final round propelled the Swede to a three-throw victory.
Pro Tip: when playing a three-round tournament, shooting the hot round in your division for all three rounds will probably earn you the win. Evidently that’s the strategy Germany’s Wolfgang Kraus took into the tournament. Kraus won by eight throws with George Braun from Stahnsdorf, Germany and Terje Rørmark from Bergen, Norway rounding out the podium.
