2023 PDGA EuroTour #5 - Skellefteå Open Round 2 Recap

Sunday, July 9, 2023 - 01:42

Lauri Lehtinen

FPO

No one is spared from "accidents" on the difficult Swedish course of Skellefteå, as shown by Hannele Määttä (Finland), provisionally fifth; she is the player who has scored the fewest bogeys with 4, so it is important to know how to reset the mind at the start of each new hole.

Czech Nikola Moravcováwill give up her place on the leader card to play in the chase card after two double bogeys dropped her to sixth.

Ella Hansen is recovering from the jet lag of her trip from the United States and is in the fight for the victory, improving by 4 strokes from yesterday's card with more and more confidence. Watch out for her tomorrow!

Tied with her is Rachel Turton (UK), who, with a solid game, is within reach if she has an excellent round, as she showed in the last one of the recent Krokhol Open in Norway.

Jenni Karppinen started very strong with a turkey in the first three holes, and after overcoming the very difficult central part of the course, she finished just two strokes behind in what would be her first victory of the season.

Who has tasted the success but also the disappointments today has been the also Finnish Sliva Saarinen, who has left for the memory a spectacular eagle on the difficult par 5 hole 11 (local players tell us that they call that hole the "4 and 10" because you can get a birdie 4, but also you can have to scramble and score a 10).

However, as if there wasn't enough excitement, a double bogey on the elevated basket on the 18th compresses the standings, leaving their lead at two strokes. All to play for!

What special talent do you need to come back to disc golf after six months of compulsory military service, compete in five tournaments in just over a month, not go lower than 5th place, win two of them, and lead the PDGA Euro Tour Skellefteå Open tied with Paul McBeth?

Lauri Lehtinen

This can summarize the spectacular return to competition of the Finnish Lauri Lehtinen, who has equaled the course record with 7-under in a spectacular round only marred by a bogey on the last hole after an early relief that sent him out of bounds.

And if Lehtinen was particularly successful from the tee shot, this time it was the Californian who found it difficult to have good timing, with several of his drives going to the right, being, however, almost perfect in putting. If he manages to combine the good things from each of the first two rounds tomorrow, it will be very difficult to beat him.

Third on the provisional podium, despite the headache he was suffering from, is the Estonian Silver Lätt, an example of consistency that always stays close to the lead, waiting for his rivals to fail in any of the rounds. If he manages to finish the tournament in the top positions, he could climb up to second place in the overall PDGA Euro Tour ranking.

And no less exciting is the fight for fourth place, with local Gustav Dahlén tied with three other representatives of Finland's never-ending pool of good players: Jesse Nieminen, Nestori Tuhkanen and young Miro Ryhanen. Tomorrow's chase card is sure to spark!
