2023 European Open — Round 2 FPO Recap

Saturday, July 22, 2023 - 02:07

After another scorching round on day two of the 2023 European Open, Kristin Tattar has expanded her lead even further over the rest of the FPO field.

Just like in Round 1, Tattar was the only FPO player to shoot under par, this time shooting six-under to expand her lead to 13 strokes over 2nd place. According to StatMando, this is the largest two-round Major lead since Valarie Jenkins’ 13-stroke lead in the 2015 Aussie Open and largest ever two-round lead at a European Major.

Tattar’s early runaway lead is reminiscent of her performance earlier this season at the 2023 Champions Cup in which she led the field by 12 strokes after Round 3 and extended that lead in the final round to finish 14 strokes ahead of the entire field.

“I was just trying to go into the round very confident, just execute the shots and not worry about making mistakes, as soon as you start to worry, the mistakes will come up,” Tattar said after her 1020 unofficially rated round.

Tattar not only has the highest birdie percentage, but has minimized her mistakes to also keep the lowest bogey percentage in the field. Her only bogey on the day was Hole 11, bringing her up to just three bogeys in the whole tournament so far. Even after taking two OB strokes on Hole 18, Tattar was able to get up and down for the par.

With two rounds left to go, Tattar is focused on staying consistent to maintain her lead, “Now it’s time to find the confidence and keep doing the same thing that I’ve been doing so far.”

While Tattar seems primed to run away with the tournament, the other players competing for a podium finish are locked in a tight race. The next ten players are all within five strokes of each other with Henna Blomroos and Missy Gannon tied for 2nd place at one stroke over par.

Blomroos had a bit of a rollercoaster round, sandwiching birdies between bogeys and following up a double bogey with back-to-back birdies. As well as taking the only birdies on Holes 12 and 16 in the tournament so far, Blomroos also parked Hole 15 for the only eagle of the day. Her abilities off the tee resulted in 4.7 strokes gained tee to green, but her performance on the putting green held her back with only 33% C1X according to UDisc.

Gannon on the other hand, played a more consistent game with a round made up mostly of pars. While she only had 1.39 strokes gained tee to green, Gannon maintained 100% C1X putting and is the only player other than Tattar to avoid taking a double bogey or worse so far in the tournament.

After jumping up to the lead card, Gannon now looks to improve and potentially make a push for the lead, “Kristin’s putting on a show so it’s going to be hard to catch her but there are two more days, two full rounds. Anything could happen and I’m just going to try to put the pedal to the metal in the next two days.”

Tattar, Blomroos, and Gannon will be joined by previous European Open champion Catrina Allen for the third round of the 2023 European Open.
