2017 Masters Worlds

Masters Women's World Champion Elaine King #3090 speaking during the awards ceremony.

They say that some things get better with age. Not all adages hold true in today’s world, but this one certainly did at the inaugural Pro Masters Disc Golf World Championships in Grand Rapids, Michigan. All six of the competitors that took home a world title after five exhausting days of disc golf are fitting examples of getting better with age, as none of them were being crowned World Champions for the first time.

2017 Masters Worlds saw a day of mixed conditions on Thursday, with patches of heavy rain and gusting winds ripping across the greater Grand Rapids area several different times throughout the day. Perhaps it was the weather, or just the wear and tear of fatigue setting in that created some significant scoring separation for many of the divisions. Either way, some major moves were made that make today’s “moving day” action that much more exciting.

Two days and three rounds later, the inaugural Pro Masters Disc Golf World Championships presented by Innova is well on its way to a nail-biting finish in its biggest divisions. Masters, Masters Women, and Senior Grandmasters have leaders sitting just one ahead of second place, while Grandmasters now have a three-way tie for the top position as we head into the morning rounds in the greater Grand Rapids, Michigan area.

The opening day of the inaugural Pro Masters Disc Golf World Championships presented by Innova has officially come to an end. Every competitor here in Grand Rapids, regardless of division or rank, is part of a new chapter in the PDGA’s and disc golf’s history books. Thankfully, it’s a long chapter, and we still have four more days of World Championship competition to go.
