Newport City Park DGC is one of the newer courses in the East TN area. It is a 9 hole course that weaves around the park. As with any course at a city park, there are definitely some safety concerns. Some of the issues will see are walking trails, pavilions, and the park drive all potentially in play. This said, if it is a busy day at the park, you are going to want to skip this course or you could be waiting quite some time to tee off on holes as not to create any real safety issues. Your best bet is to make your way to this course on a cold winter day or during a week day when there are less likely to be families at the park. If you are able to make it to this course on a non-busy day, I the play of the course is actually pretty fun. It is a very short course with most of the holes being less than 300'. The course has great tee pads and great signage. The one complaint I have about the tee signs is that some of them are oddly placed in close proximity to the tee pads. If you don't make yourself aware of this, you could likely hit your hand on a tee sign on your follow through. As for the designs of the holes, they are short but there are some fun lines to throw. Not all of them are just throwing at a basket that is out in the open. There are actually some fun little lines to play. My one last complaint about the course is that Hole 9's basket is pretty far away from Hole 1's tee meaning if you want to loop the course twice to play 18, you have a pretty far walk to get back where you started. This also means that you are going to have a moderately long walk back to where you parked if you don't try to strategically park at a central location between the two holes. Small complaints for what is a decently fun layout to play. This isn't a course that you are going to want to travel to but if you are near it, you might as well get a round in. There are some fun ace runs out there. One last thing I would like to say about this course is that the first time I played it, the basket for Hole 3 was missing so I was only able to play 8 holes. On this most recent visit, Hole 3 had a brand new basket so the city is doing what they can to keep the course up. This is definitely a positive.
