Doss withstands last minute assault to win Golden State Classic
Hole 18 at La Mirada's championship course held the greatest drama of the weekend as Steve Rico placed his tee shot between the double mandatory trees at the top of the hill, while Nate Doss, leading by two, landed far below and far left. Doss' upshot was past Rico's by a few feet. Steve set up for a 50 foot eagle attempt and although his putt was close and just inbounds it essentially sealed his fate. Nate completd the win by making his birdie putt. A solid handshake and respectful embrace between the two competitors ended the round, while the crowd applauded their efforts over the past three days in near oppressive heat.
Eric McCabe held onto third with a solid finish and Josh Anthon held off Philo Braithwaite's attempt to rush off the second card to finish fourth. Young Paul McBeth excited the crowd with an amazing eagle on hole 16.
Valarie Jenkins soared to an eleven throw lead over her nearest competitor Liz Lopez in the Open Women's division competition.
The big story of the day, however, was the astounding finish by GM aged Steve Wisecup, playing in the Master's division. Throwing a course record 55 in the final round, Steve finished the tournament at -32, four throws ahead of Nate Doss's winning score in the open division.
Other winners for the weekend were Suzette Simons (Masters Women), Tom Clickner (Grandmasters), and Phil Ganshert (Senior Grandmasters).
Even with the intense heat throughout the tournament, players were highly complementary of the tournament. Tournament Director Tim Selinske took good care of everyone, with a new Innova Monarch, a dinner at local favorite Geezer's restaurants, great course amenities, and the now-traditional charity auction and raffle to benefit the Starlight Children's Foundation.
